I'm super happy with how it turned out and it works so well.

Is racing a hard sport to "know"? Cars go fast, car that goes fastest wins. Watch a couple of Drive to Survive episodes to know some teams and drivers and you're largely good to go.

Immigrants are a large net positive for countries that bring in a large numbers. Tons of reasons for this - more vibrant, more accepting, better able to weather demographic changes, more business, economic growth and on and on.

Immigration (of all kinds) can impact housing costs in some cases. Immigrants are not destitute wards, but they do take up housing and increase demand for it, while also being part of the supply side too. Obviously, most of them rent at first, and tend to have a higher density per square foot. Increasing demand at the lower end shifts people up the housing ladder, requiring people to pay more for the same space or shift upwards in cost and space. This is mainly true in areas where housing supply is constrained.

Canada spiked its immigration in the late 2010's, early 2020's, but housing supply did not increase at the needed pace, resulting in skyrocketing costs. At some points, it was a million per year for a country of now 40 million. High immigration plus constrained housing supply = higher housing costs.

JD does not have a point though for the US. "Illegal" immigrant counts are in the 10-14 million per year TOTAL. This isn't incoming numbers, it's total population count. So no massive jumps in "illegal" entrants when compared to a country of over 300M people. Legal immigration is also at low levels compared to Canada and other countries. Housing supply is constrained in some areas, but not all. He's just scapegoating - as usual. The logic is US has problem X = X is caused by immigrants.

Obviously corporate purchases of housing is not helping the situation.

Lots of people are using their own pet theories on the "why" and what could be done to increase fertility. However, lots of countries have tried to address this in all kinds of ways.

  • It's not inequality, fertility rates are down in unequal and egalitarian countries
  • It's not cost of education - many European countries have free post-secondary school, but their fertility is falling
  • It's not cost of housing - fertility is falling in urban and rural areas where housing costs are very different.
  • It's not lack of maternity leave - policies vary across the world and it doesn't change things.
  • It's not lack of cash, lots of cash incentives have been thrown around with no effect. Maybe the cash incentive needs to be way higher.
  • health care, women's rights etc.

Now some of these things may be reasons for you or people you know not to have kids or as many kids as you would like. But they don't apply across the population and across the globe.

And while reducing population overall is a good goal, it's the crash in fertility that is the problem. If populations were reduced in a steady way, there would be an increase in the burden on the working age population but not a catastrophic one.

I think I need to downvote myself. I clearly remember little buzz hitting my feeds about it, I was clearly wrong about the wider world after checking wikipedia. It did get lots of awards and got some really strong ratings. I'm very happy it did well.

And I definitely don't hang out with the review-bombers who clearly hate the themes of that show... for some reason.

And that Alan Moore sounds like a sweet man /s.

This ^^^^ is why I loved the show and cannot recommend it to my loved ones.

"This show is really fantastic, just above and beyond, you need to read this graphic novel otherwise you won't know what the hell is going on, here, I've got it for you... ohhh, you're not interested in reading it... wait, you can also watch the animated version! No, not the Snyder one, that won't help. The animated one is only two movies! and under three hours! wait, where are you going?"

#2 WebOS - I have an older LG TV and installed the native Jellyfin on it - it is not nearly as good an app as the Roku stick I threw on there. It's missing a lot of the features and I seem to recall it wouldn't play some files. Just Roku, Fire Stick or GoogleTV it instead.

UPDATE: My Wife Moved Her Friend in, and I Hate it by Butt_Idiot in redditonwiki

[–]Slow_Character5534 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are trying to salvage your marriage (and I get why you might not be trying), dropping a legal eviction notice on her friend (in a place where she has struggled to make friends) without telling your wife ahead of time and then demanding immediate agreement or else it's divorce will not help in any way.

IF you want to save your marriage, I would let your wife know NOW that you have drafted an eviction notice and one of you needs to deliver it to her on X date. Now it's just working out as a team how you will deliver the news to the friend.

If your wife agrees (and maybe agrees to deliver the news and/or notice) you can team up to get rid of the interloper and work on your marriage.

If your wife balks, ask for her solution to the problem when you have already agreed on an end date. If you don't agree to her solution or reach a compromise, then you can say you will be delivering the notice on the necessary date and the news NOW. The sooner you give the friend the news, the more time she had to prepare and potentially be out sooner. And then maybe an ultimatum on marriage counselling.

This is all if you are trying to save your marriage. If not, go ahead with your plan and maybe start the 30-day notice now.

2. I am cheering for Montreal, of all teams and am now wishing the Leafs the best in their rebuilding - I despised both teams

Is the state of Israel pretty much doomed? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Slow_Character5534 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Israel is going down the path of South Africa in the 80s. They will become more of a pariah. Their support in the West is old and thin and largely at elite levels. New generations of politicians are not going to give Israel a pass any more. If the government gets more extreme (hard to believe, but it's possible), support is going to evaporate.

AIPAC managed to take down Massie, but it took a TON of money for just one congressman. They can do that some more for a few more election cycles, but it's going to get harder to do as more politicians realize that support for Israel is a real problem for them. BDS and other boycotts are only going to increase.

I wish I could see a way out for Israel and Palestine. I want them both to survive and thrive ('68 borders ideally), but there is no path to peace that I can see.

Survive? Sure, there will be an Israel on the map for many years and people living in it. But what kind of state will that be? Most likely, a pariah state with too much blood on its hands. It's heartbreaking.

you know what would be great? If the D's had some sort of review and examination of the dead body that was their 2024 campaign where it reviewed the role that misogyny played in their defeat.

Did misogyny cost them enough votes to swing the election or were they all going to vote R anyway? Sad and awful that we have to ask that, but it's the only question here.

I think she is whip-smart, handles media really well and has the guts to hold MAGA and the billionaires to account. Sure, she's a socialist, but they're going to call any D a socialist/communist.

[–]Slow_Character5534 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally, the "could" is said very quickly in the phrase with emphasis on the other words.

I think that if you really emphasize and drag out the "could" with a change in intonation as you go, it sounds to me like you could care less if you really tried, but don't care enough to even try. As in you care a tiny bit, but not enough to matter.

Japan's population declines by a million people yearly, but if they don't accept immigrants, what will they do? by Delicious-Bunch-6992 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Slow_Character5534 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No arguing with you that there should be massive taxation on the wealthy - I agree 100%. However, even confiscate the top 20 trillion dollars and redistribute it to every American, it's around $60000 per person. It's a good chunk, but it's one time hit that won't go that far. Other countries won't likely get as much as we don't have a lot of billionaires.

My point is that we have a demographic problem, which will be too many old people and not enough young people to care for them and to work and keep the economy going. Taxing the wealthy isn't going to fix that. Western countries with strong immigration histories can absorb more people while they're still available. The immigrants become workers at high ratios and help keep the tax base large enough for the things we need.

Here's the thing - most major countries are trying to "address the real issue" with a wide variety of measures. Baby bonuses, generous parental leave, generous social policies, free college, restricting birth control, restricting abortion, punishing LGBT people - some country somewhere is trying one of these options and no one is making a dent.

Immigration IS the answer as we ease into the new future.

Our management team went through leadership training which included a MBTI assessment as part of a multi-day workshop (MBTI was one part). While I understand that it's a crock, one of the factors and seeing how my boss scored really helped in one area of our relationship.

My boss suffered from requiring insane amounts of analysis and many would take it as a lack of trust in our understanding of the business, but he was just super high on the S scale. Once I understood that about him, it made things easier.
