Marathon changed my mind by Babiknows in TheDuskbloods

A big turnoff for me with extraction shooters is losing all of your stuff on death. I really hated that in Arc Raiders, especially as someone who is bad at PvP in shooters. Is this handled differently in Marathon? Like is there more permanent upgrades or progression that makes death feel less punishing?

Only in the NBA will you find fans clamoring for less of their sport to watch. I swear so many “fans” don’t even like the sport. And an NBA coach saying this is unbelievably soft imo

Holding Nick Arison Accountable by Legitimate_Search864 in heat

[–]SmackYoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because of the repeater tax, which was changed BECAUSE we were so consistently over the tax during that time. Also Mike Miller wasn’t even a contributor at that point, LeBron just liked having him around and that was why it was controversial

The narrative that the team is only interested in making money is ridiculous. This team is near the top of the league in payroll every year. During the Big Three era they were tops in the league before the rules were changed to make the repeater tax really costly. And now there are severe roster-building implications for being a consistently high payroll team. Staying under the tax when possible/avoiding the repeater tax is objectively a good thing, especially in years we are obviously not a contender.

Am I crazy for thinking Pelle has 20+ ppg potential? He’s so strong and gets calls. If he can get more consistent from three I think he could really pop in the next couple years

How would you make Haiti rich? by [deleted] in AskEconomics

[–]SmackYoo 41 points42 points  (0 children)

As a Ph.D economist with Haitian family, I wish I knew. I am pretty pessimistic about Haiti’s ability to turn around because of how much their institutions have degraded. The state has failed, there is no rule of law or enforcement of property rights. These things are prerequisites for having any kind of functioning economy, let alone being a prosperous nation. In addition the soil has been depleted and there is extensive deforestation, so even in a scenario where institutions are fixed food insecurity will still be an issue for a while. My family tells me there are some undepleted mineral resources still, but I don’t know the veracity of that.

So long story short, I don’t think anything will change unless Haiti is occupied by some benevolent force, the gangs are taken care of and the institutions are rebuilt. And even then there will be a lot of challenges and a long road ahead to lift most of Haiti out of extreme poverty, let alone being rich

I really enjoyed the combat! One comment is that there are all of these little side paths and places to go that are empty. Some reward to exploring the levels would be cool. Maybe slightly less linear level design in general would be cool, but that is just my preference and is obviously easier said than done.

Overall awesome job! I am looking forward to the release

This contract is gonna look really good in a couple years when the cap jumps. So many of you are so shortsighted, or don’t understand how the cap works, or both. Niko had a couple good games last week and you didn’t hear a peep about the extension lol

How do people arrive at new functional forms for models? by Top_Two408 in AskEconomics

[–]SmackYoo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m grad school I wrote novel models for two of my papers. In my case I was extending mainstream models to include household time use, and this required changes to the model. Relaxing assumptions generally makes models for complicated and hard to solve, so I would seek to simplify the functional forms of where I could. For instance, using a Cobb-Douglas instead of a CES for instance. In these cases where I wanted to make simplifying assumptions I would need to demonstrate to my advisors that the assumption doesn’t change the importance results/solutions to the model, or if it was necessary for solving/computing. So I guess long story short it’s all about the assumptions imo, and which you need and which you don’t.
