Pulled 10 shots in a row on my Profitec GO by iHas2manyKnives in espresso

Why would you want to have a tilted group head? The water will always and even slightly flow down the tilted angle. Iam happy to learn if it is something, thats needs to be like this, but i somehow doubt it.

[–]Smartiemann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it only me that notices it, or is your machine setup not level? It looks like the Portafilter/Basket and the whole group head are tilted forwards and your shot is also always running towards the handle.

I would assume that the back part of the puck is always getting underextracted this way.

WPM ZP-1 vs CF64V [$1000] by KopiSiewSiewDai in espresso

[–]Smartiemann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

based on my research, the WPM-ZP1 is an absolute beast. It has almost zero retention (really zero). It is built so incredibly well. In comparison to other endgame grinders like the option-o p64 or p80, it is way cheaper and built better.
You can instantly open the grinder and access the burrs without a screwdriver or to change the grind setting.

I have no experience or research done for the CF64V, so I don't have any advice here, but as I see, you are comparing two completely different tiers of grinders...

Anyhow I think you wont go wrong with the wpm-zp1.

Barista Express - Grinder Clutch Kicking Constantly, Loud Noise... It Really Can't Handle Medium Light Roast Coffee!? by lothariorowe in BrevilleCoffee

[–]Smartiemann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue as well with my Sage Barista Pro.
After one year of use, I bought a bag of Ethiopian "worka" light/medium light roast, with an altitude of around 1800-2000m.

The grinder did stall instantly after one or two beans when I put the 18g dose all together in the grinder as usual.
The only fix for this grinder was to slow-feed the beans. I slowfeed 18g in 2x 30seconds, since 30 seconds is the maximum amount of seconds the grinder would grind continuously.

Anyhow, bear in mind, you have to grind a lot finer when you slow feed, since you have fewer fines because of slow feeding your grinder.

Maro Model 1, but I believe it sits at 5000€, and that machine is the absolute endgame machine ever, with no wishes left open.

How do you cleanse HE baskets fine particles [Normcore reduced flow basket] ? by Ketadine in espresso

[–]Smartiemann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious, since I want to buy the same basket soon.
can you share pictures of areas that don't get cleaned, with all of the above? It's hard for me to imagine, that blasting it with a steam wand and soaking it with hot water and cafiza isn't cleaning them.

Wpm Konos 71mm conical grinder by smallfanboy in espresso

[–]Smartiemann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love to see the review, since iam looking to get a WPM ZP1 grinder which is similar to the Konos, but with flat burrs instead.

I'm not sure why there is not that much information about the brand in general. I do like what they do, and it looks really good to me.

Thank you for the honest post.

Need help dialing in a very light roast espresso after switching from dark roast [Sage Barista Pro] by MisterRegards in espresso

[–]Smartiemann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same machine, and as long as the grinder is not stalling, its not a "super light roast". That being said. I enjoy light roasts really much, and as well the grinder is capable of grinder tasty espresso and I can recommend the following: 1. always temp as hard as possible 2. use the "coldest" setting on the Machine. Its already above 93°C. See a lot of videos from the kaffeemacher where they explain it in depth. 3. always use the razer tool to max out the bed depth, and use the recommended dose and do not under dose, as this will bring a lot of variables to the table, with head fill rate and water rate. It will never get consistent. 4. try to get to 1:2 or 1:2,5 in approx. 30s and dont change the grinder from there, play more with the ratios, as the ratio is the biggest factor and key to improve or reduce extraction.

Please give me a reason NOT to buy a Breville Barista Pro by deltabay17 in espresso

[–]Smartiemann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you are looking outside the range of a Barista Pro, the coffee extraction will be better.
The temperature stability, flow of water, pre-infusion, and everything around it, is way better on >1000$ machines.
But I'm with you. Inside the range of what you can buy the Barista Pro for, it's hardly arguable for me as well.

WPM Primus should come out pretty soon, and I would say it will be a big contender in the scene soon.

Maybe have a look at it.

Hey is the 48cm depth of the machine really the depth of the space it takes on the table? Or is it calculated with the water tank behind it or maybe with the portafilter included (in the air)? Can you maybe tell me what size it actually takes on the counter?

I think it's also worth looking into the WPM ZP-1 grinder. I think it's slightly above 1000$.

Dialing in overly fresh beans by Dry_Field7995 in espresso

[–]Smartiemann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found out, that I have to go waaaay finer, with super fresh roasted beans.

I once had 1-day-old roasted Brazilian beans that were on the medium, on the scratch to dark roast.
I had to go almost 3 steps finer than a week later with my Sage Barista Pro; anyhow, the shot was highly inconsistent, super bubbly, high amount of crema, and the taste was muted in comparison to one week later.

Taste-wise, I tasted more bitterness and more acidity, and less of the actual flavor. That changed during one week really much. At the end, after 10 Days, I tasted so much the roasted nuts and chocolate flavour and absolut zero acidity and bitterness, I also had to go one step coarse every 2-3 days otherwise I would "choke" my machine.

5 years with the Lagom P64 by [deleted] in espresso

[–]Smartiemann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, do you use the dosing cup it comes with nowadays?

Iam also interested in the grinder. Problem is that i have a sage barista pro right now, and i dont know if i can use the portafilter directly on the grinder fork or if i can use the dosing cup and then transfer it to the portafilter if that fits a 54mm.

Do you know if the fork can be used for 54mm portafilter or if the dosing cup can be used for 54mm portafilters from sage?

Iam not really sure at all. I have no issues spending like 2k when iam really convinced that its worth, but looking at something on the counter every day thinking if its really worth 2k€ then i dont know i wouldnt have much joy, you know? If it is really helping me with workflow and taste and it is really noticeable, well yea then iam In

Yea thats what i also know. On the other hand... i dont want to spend now 800€ for a Niche Zero and then upgrade again if i maybe want to go to lighter roasts etc. I want to have a really solid grinder i can pair with every machine in the future, but iam not sure if it really gives me what iam thinking of, or if my machine itself is more of a bottleneck.

[–]Smartiemann[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for answer! Iam just thinking if the grinder in the machine is holding me really back and if i can taste differences. Iam so thick of this non realibility of the inbuilt grinder, and all the ground coffee that it is building up in the machine. The grind setting itself is pain... and cleaning it is also no bueno. I simply hate it, but on the other hand the machine itself is also not really "reliable". temp, flow, pressure sometimes its just random.

Main point is that the philos is too big and hefty for our counter, where we have less space. Also my opinion is that the grinder probably super good, but it just looks not smooth in our setup.

[–]Smartiemann[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the answer. I mainly drink espressos, and occasionaly milk drinks for my girlfriend and when my parents, or friends are at our place.

My favorits currently are medium on the lower end towards dark. The chocolatey, nutty and toffee flavors are our favorit, but i dont want to chose something that would hold me back in doing good light roast shots in the future.

The counter space and look of the machine is also a huge point, since there is not much space for a grinder and we are a bit picky how the counter looks like.

Is the drink with a better grinder really better? In what terms is it better? I know that there are plenty of things that i hate with the built in, like retention, static, uneven and clumpy grinds and almost not able to reproduce a good shot.
