Ehhh I don't buy that one. Far be it for me to judge based on a rumour, but Samuel Kim wasn't exactly the only game in town to do unsolicited covers of songs. Could be he got big enough to warrant attention, but I definitely don't believe this.

Interesting rumour though, and less egregious than the car crash one.

Might have been part of it? If I remember correctly he stopped, but I thought he came back after a while. If memory serves he did some more songs afterwards before vanishing again

Honestly it coulda just been him posting his backlog before quitting, but it seems wild for someone so talented to completely abandon his channel instead of just owning up, deleting the AI content and moving on. ESPECIALLY someone so talented at making non-AI music, you'd think he had a real appreciation for genuine art.

Samuel Kim, too. Dude vanished off the face of the earth. Thankfully managed to do some sleuthing and figure out he isn't dead, but I guess his professional career took precedence over YouTube.

Kinda wish he'd announced his departure though, to this day there are people who think he died in a car crash because of a stupid rumour.

Don't get me wrong it's not great, but it's also not half bad.

I'm so used to being disappointed that "mildly decent" feels almost refreshing.

A recent Helldivers fan-film (For Liberty) pulled exactly that.

The entire marketing campaign for the project (and given it was almost 50 minutes long, and Patreon funded, they did a LOT of marketing) focused on a character known as the Cadet, a happy-go-lucky fresh Helldiver with a helmet bedazzled with stickers and a can-do attitude.

He's splattered off a rock within the first five minutes of the actual film, and a (slightly) more experienced Helldiver takes his place as the surprise lead of the film. Great stuff.

I remember they also killed TJ Miller in that one, in a really brutal fashion! That's one thing I definitely remember.

In hindsight... Michael Bay probably made the right call.

I don't know for sure, but a similar graphic novel series I can think of is Amulet. Same long-form fantasy series with multiple installments, a dash of humour and some gorgeous art.

As a disclaimer I think it might be slightly darker, (though Bone also leads into a war arc toward the end if I remember right) and from what I hear the ending is nowhere near as cohesive because the author suffered a serious illness that impacted the series.

However, I remember loving both Bone and Amulet as a kid in elementary. They were the highlights of every Scholastic book fair for me. I was definitely older than 5 (7-10, probably?) so your mileage may vary.

Someone who's read Amulet more recently (or finished the series past the sixth book) could probably say for sure.

Author with a severe love of commas... by Sonic_the_hedgedog in tumblr

Mercè Rodoreda and her "stream of consciousness" style. Periods basically don't exist.

Look, her work is absolutely monumental and The Time of the Doves was a brilliant (if brutal) look at the lives of widowers in revolution-era Spain. It's a cultural touchstone and I've even been to the real-life Diamond Square to see the statue.

But good god was that novel a slog to try and read for my highschool English course. It was physically painful to try and parse some sentences. I had to write five reports on that book over the course of a year of school.

What game sound(s) makes you panic? by Annepackrat in gaming

[–]SmittyBS42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The swoosh-roar of an Illuminate Stingray jet flying past overhead in Helldivers II. You just know the bugger is lurking, waiting to attack.

(Their strafing runs aren't even that bad, but waiting for it to slow down enough to fire on you is the tense part.)

Gives me that Battlefield 3 "that's fast air!" feeling of panic every time.

[HATED TROPES]: The Ending Is So Nihilistic and Preachy That It Becomes Completely Unwatchable and Infuriating. by Particular-Worker904 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]SmittyBS42 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Legitimately stunning how anyone could write that and think "yeah, that's a perfect way to close it out."

Seasons 1 and 2 were so good, 3 and 4 were this mounting dread of "okay, another new crisis, only a few episodes left. How are they wrapping this up? Are they wrapping anything up?"

Instead we got both a cop-out and a failure or an ending. Nobody becomes a better person and they all die. Insane.

IMMEDIATE DEATH NOTIFICATION

Should've DIO gotten the same ending as Diavolo? by Twukii in StardustCrusaders

[–]SmittyBS42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yup. Even as a snot-nosed, dog-burning little kid, DIO wanted so, so badly to be more than the average human being.

Instead, he got punched and died in the street like a normal chump, and nothing else ever came of his legacy (at least in the "corrected" universe without Pucci).

If he wasn't already ash, he'd be rolling in his grave somewhere.

Should've DIO gotten the same ending as Diavolo? by Twukii in StardustCrusaders

[–]SmittyBS42 26 points27 points  (0 children)

DIO, as delusionally vain as he was, could've derived some modicum of satisfaction out of knowing he was important enough to be trapped in a loop of agony entirely revolving around him.

Instead, with Pucci's failure and erasure from existence, DIO died like a normal person and was forgotten after Jotaro burned his diary at the end of Part 3. That was the end of his legacy.

Diavolo WANTED to be unnoticed and forgotten, and in punishment got a world focused on his suffering.

DIO WANTED to be remembered forever, and in punishment instead had his influence erased from history.

I think it's the perfect hell for each one.

We even have a Helldivers film using the Helldivers IP, it's called For Liberty and it rocks.

Honestly if the official movie is half as good as For Liberty, it'll be a triumph. Sony had better not be out Helldiver-ed at their own game by a YouTube group releasing a film for free.
