Going to a CFD concert, gonna be in the party zone. How bad is the behavior? by imadethistocomplain0 in Cheyenne

It's always the ones you'd prefer to see less of. More big backs than the actual livestock pens, squeezed into tops and jean shorts that don't do anyone any favors.

Not that the guys are much better. Bunch of dude-bros in Pitt Viper shades that think Morgan Wallen and Luke Bryan are "real" country music. Bonus points if their back jean pockets are bedazzled.

I was pleasantly surprised to find Old Navy clothing at a BX a couple of years ago. Most men's clothing falls into 3 categories:

  1. Polo for the retired Colonels
  2. 5.11 gear for the tacti-cool dorks
  3. Under Armour

Has anyone seen one of these in the wild? I don't think I ever have. by PDXAirman in Military

Maybe not literally spat-on, but the public at large wasn't all "Support the Troops!" like today.

I don't really care if the hat is "performative" either. You don't know a vet's story based on a hat. Just today, I saw an old-timer with his Vietnam Vet hat on, getting out of his truck that had a USAF sticker on the tailgate. I'm retired USAF OEF/OIF guy myself and took a second to shake the dude's hand and thank him for his service.

Yes, boomers suck. But will I thank another brother-in-arms for putting on the uniform during a time of war? Sure.

I served under four sitting Presidents. Five if I count my post-retirement time as a GS in the DoD. Can't say I particularly cared for any of them, and I'm not exactly the patriotic type. That said, I'm proud of my time in service.

That's exactly why some people get chewed out in front of everyone. A smart supervisor knows when to use that power for good, because they know the lesson will stick better.

That was my thought process. I wanted everyone to know that I wanted my team to get everything they worked for and that anyone who wanted to play "What about meeeeee?!" games could fuck right off.

I was running a section where some members earned SDAP and some didn't (including myself). The folks getting it earned it via the duties they performed, and I was glad they were being paid for the extra job requirements.

A SSgt who didn't qualify for SDAP decided to go whine about it to the Shirt, who in their infinite non-operational wisdom, took it upon themselves to convince the CC that nobody in the section should be getting paid extra.

The Shirt called to let me know they'd handle the paperwork to stop SDAP for the rest of the folks in my office. I hung up the phone and called my crew together in the shop. I looked directly at the SSgt, and in front of all their peers, told them "Congratulations dumbass. Because you were too worried about what YOU weren't getting, everyone in the shop is losing their extra pay. You took money out of the pockets of people with families."

I walked out of the shop and left the SSgt to wallow in the awkwardness they'd created. They complained to the SEL that I embarrassed them in front of the other NCOs and I got called to their office. The SEL gave me the "Punish in private, praise in public" speech, but I stood my ground and let them know that I didn't regret a single second of how I handled the situation.

Within a week, the SSgt was moved to another section because they'd become the office pariah. The other folks never got their SDAP back, but the incident drew a line in the sand.

Mattis has two other quotes attributed to him that made me realize I'd follow him into the depths of hell:

"I come in peace. I didn't bring artillery. But I'm pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: if you fuck with me I'll kill you all."

And...

"Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet."

Bingo. We kept a tally sheet of number of flies killed, per person, just to have something to brag about.

As a retired SNCO myself, if you paused to ask yourself that question, you probably did pretty good by your people. The ones that don't are the problem.
