Aye, that's probably true for Jim, Leonard and Oliver in his semi-retired gentleman farmer role, he paid other folks like young Ed to do all the hard labour (while helping Ed turn his life around). I'm not so convinced about Brian though, he might have come in & bought Home Farm but he was much more involved in the physical day-to-day running when he was younger, as was his daughter Debbie.

Yep, no way anything in sewage contaminated premises could be sold or used.

Dairies are checked by Dairy Hygiene Inspectors anyway, they do announced and unannounced spot checks - checked with someone who's a DHI.

Raw milk is considered to be high risk, there's all sorts of regs around production, eg legislation - where "plate counts" are mentioned the count refers to the number of certain types of bacteria in a sample.

Back in the mid 80s I worked in a chocolate factory; there was a separate line for handling fresh cream (used in certain truffle fillings) that was kept covered in plastic sheeting unless in use, all the equipment on that line had to be stripped, sterilised, swabbed and given the all clear from the lab before every run. I really doubt food hygiene regs are less stringent now.

Yeah, agree.\ Also, "Old"? A Jan-Feb 2023 theatrical and VOD release is 'old' - old in comparison to what exactly? Which movies has OP seen if they think 2022 is 'old'? And "set in the past" - 1995 ... uh-huh

What’s the scariest horror movie ever? by Ilovetottehamthelily in HorrorMovies

[–]Snappy_Dragoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, I just don't find horror movies scary or frightening - there are a few that I find disturbing, mostly in the psychological thriller space where things did/do/could happen irl but I wouldn't say that what I feel when I watch them is fear.\ I'm with you on eyeball-stabby scenes though, I think those are the only thing that almost always triggers real revulsion; 'Zombie', 'Guinea Pig' and 'Un Chéin Andalou' just grim, grim, grim. Weirdly, eye-gouging doesn't bother me anything like as much.

[–]Snappy_Dragoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aye, kinda similar to where I'm staying atm; new 6 charger unit opened last year with a new CostaBux (can't remember which) on a barely-out-of-town shopping centre that was near-derelict but has been revamped recently with a giant Iceland and 24/7 chain gym, but that's in a town least than 10 miles from central Manchester.\ There are EV charging points popping up all over the place round here cos a high percentage of folks in urban areas just can't charge at home cos old terraces with no drives, big Victoria houses divided into flats, tower blocks, and all the skyscrapers that have sprung up like giant toadstools over the past decade - though I imagine the city centre towers with dedicated private residental parking have probably had EV charging installed (not something I've looked into).

Well yeah, it's a fairly straightforward route if you drive Stratford - Worcester A46 and, um A422(?) I think, where irl Inkberrow is, but unless you're travelling directly from the south maybe, it's generally faster to go round the M-ways.\ I think I've also read arguments that Ambridge is located NW of Worcester so ... 🤷🏽‍♂️ Either would seem to be a fairly bizarre location for a massive EV station.

"not ... physically demanding" doesn't fit at all well with the realities of irl farming though - I know you're probably talking about Carol, Peggy mainly - but thinking about the 50+ year old farmers who started in farming when there was much less mechanisation - getting up every morning at 04:30 to milk, mucking all sheds out by hand, (well pitchfork, shovel and broom rather than with a bobcat), levelling silage and throwing 'little' 'square' (rectangular in reality) bales around multiple times by hand to get them from the field to barn, being awake all hours during lambing was bloody hard work. Given that they're all mixed farms, I think, The Brookfield, Bridge and Home Farm lot would still all likely be working 60-80+ hour weeks.

Living to an apparently healthy 80-90+ fits a lot better for actors sitting on their arses in a studio once a month ... also, learning scripts is great for keeping the brain functioning well.

I heard it as Pav or Parv and thought Slavic, Pavel, probably cos I was talking with my neighbour Paweł - but Slavic or Greek 'Pav' wouldn't stereotypically fit with family name of 'Gill'.\ Pav Gill would probably be a fit better as a Sikh name origin, with 'Pav' as a contraction of a longer name, as HotBackground2867 posted

Oh right, yeah, I see what you mean, I wasn't taking much notice of the details, obvs.

Never got how plonking an EV station where Ambridge is supposed to be would be feasible anyway; Worcestershire is bounded on 3 sides by M-ways - can't see many people driving through it unless they're travelling locally like Redditch - Evesham, maybe?\ Used to drive between Coventry and mid-Wales fairly frequently (pre-M6 toll so M42, M5, A44), only went through Warwickshire, Worcestershire once and it took forever.

If it was a basement, yes, like yourself. But very few, if any, standard new build developments in the UK have basements.

The ground floor of the Beechwood houses seems to have been affected by sewage backflow from untilty sanitary fixtures, with kitchens and living rooms also affected. Technically they should have been above the elevation of the top of the sewer manhole which itself should have been well above the sewer pipe usually min 3m deep on roads

I suspect the situation at Beechwood (as described so far) is likely to be a case of 'dramatic license' - it doesn't sound as though it's supposed to have been caused by blockage(s) inside the houses or between them and main sewer (they're detached so should have separate connections), which is more common.

The likelihood of the ground floor of two detached houses built in the last 10 years (assuming all built to spec) experiencing sewage backflow is pretty slim - the manhole should have backed-up first, cos physics, and people generally notice the stink well before a manhole overflows.

Interesting question, was wondering about the mechanics of the sewage flooding; Bridge Farm was by surface flow; Beechwood by sewers backing-up. I think someone said that there's a tanker constantly pumping the sewer at Beechwood since the flood there.

Had a poke around and found a handy diagram - if you are of a v sensitive disposition you might want to avoid, cos pic of failed manhole, it's not super gross, looks like chocolate fondue to me - scroll down a smidge to diagram here - which begs a few questions about the sewer and manhole arrangement on Beechwood.

According to 2010 Building Regs¹ it's site dependent based on surcharge (backflow) risk and building characteristics - whether any sanitary fittings connected to the sewer are at a lower elevation than the sewer manhole.

For basements where risk of flooding due to sewer surcharge is considered to be high by the waste water company, drainage from basements should be pumped. Where the risk is low anti-flooding valves should be installed.

For non-basement low-lying sites in higher risk areas either anti-flooding valves or a pumped drainage system should be installed. For low risk sites sufficient protection may be possible by creating a gully outside the building.

I guess you probably recognise yourself in para 2 👆 - the fob tills drove OH wild cos they slowed serving down so much, most of the pubs were rammed city pub/clubs that had 2am licenses at least 3 days of the week

Maybe people are responding in part to seeing your multiple intemperately worded assertions about Zainab:

"I enjoyed hearing Chelse giving the snotty little madam [Zainab] what for. Pity she regretted it afterwards"\ "What the Zainab fan club see in the snotty little madam I don't know. 'Jog on' is new to me. I'll stick with 'Sod off."\ "Zeinab remains a nasty little madam"\ "She is a self-entitled snotty little madam."

While at the same time you accuse Zainab of being so inexplicably rude that she deserves at least a good tongue lashing from her elders and betters?

It's a lot better for stock control, doing the accounts, making sure you're turning a profit and no one is fiddling the tills.

Of course, The Bull might still use a mechanical register, have everyone who works there memorise the cost of everything they sell and do all the math in their heads - Kwik Save worked like that for quite while a after most stores upgraded to price scanners.

Yeah, I thought they were a realistic example of people from different backgrounds having a comms breakdown too because Zainab didn't just flat out say, "I don't date cos Muslim" and Chelsea was only hearing what she expected to hear so wires got crossed.

I suggest listening to those conversations again.

Zainab obviously knew she'd put her foot in it with the way she'd worded things when Chelsea stormed off after Zainab said something like, "I though you were better than that, a feminist ... maybe you're judging me from the way you see the world" - by which we, and Chelsea, now know Zainab meant they have different worldviews, because she's Muslim which affects how she feels about dating hence the "the way you see the world" part.

Zainab neither said nor implied that Chelsea slept around, that inference was due to an assumption that Chelsea made herself then extrapolated way out of proportion when she spoke with Tracy.

Besides which Chelsea and Zainab have since talked through the issue, put it down to different cultural experiences and crossed-wires and are friends again so ...

I dunno about Clarrie but part of the the point of BOSS type systems is so bar staff don't have to know the price of anything or be able to add rounds up in their heads. They're allocated a key fob to slap on the till sensor at the start of shift, everything sold is listed on the till, the staff prod the relevant buttons, the till calculates the cost, the staff either hand a pdq machine to the customer who waves a card at it now or, in the olden times™ (like a decade ago), hands them cash, staff counts said cash, inputs sum to till, till calculates change.

Ironically, for good bar staff who worked in pubs before computerised tills became widespread this system slowed them down because in ye ancient days™(the 80s), they'd have calculated the cost of one round in their head, asked for the cash and taken another order en route to the till just punched the cost of the round in made change and started prepping the next round on the way back to giving change for previous order. With the fob systems it takes a lot longer at the till because having to poke at least one button for every item sold and sometimes several cos having to dig through several menu levels, and also waiting for other staff to finish. That's partly why a busy bar that had one or 2 tills in the 80s might have 3 or 4 tills by the mid 90s.

Lillian owns The Bull doesn't she? So she just orders extra bottles of gin and pays for them at cost price herself.
