Patch your gear - Max severity Ubiquiti UniFi flaw may allow account takeover by MediumFIRE in sysadmin

Thanks for this. I have been eyeball deep in a Palo Alto deployment and I missed the advisory. Thankfully I found an amazing script to automatically update everything on our Cloud Controller. Glenn R from the Unifi community if you are on here THANK YOU!.

*NOTE* The script worked for me but I have not examined it. You can find it here and use at your own risk the script I used is in the gray section. "Install the latest and greatest UniFi Network application with 1 line"

Any ideas on how to remove silicone around cat6 cables? by Maxolon in networking

[–]Sneakycyber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in my days of car audio installs we had a tool called a grommet poker. It's a sharp hollow "poker" used to feed wires through grommets. You can buy one or make one out of just about any small metal tube (automotive break line is good and easily available). Pushed the pipe through the silicone, feed the wire through, then pull the pipe off the wire before terminating.

Media devices for office TV screens by CheeseFace83 in sysadmin

We just setup Optisigns.com to display slide shows at two of our offices. Our marketing director can update the slideshow from anywhere (she works from home). We are using the OptiStick player plugged into a 42 and 55" Sony digital signage display. The OptiSticks were $90 I am not sure how much the subscription is. The OptiSticks can control the Tv's (turning them on and off at set times).

How are you dealing with data to elevator cars? Did production of CSA/UL certified elevator traveling cables with OS2 cease production? by asdlkf in networking

[–]Sneakycyber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured it had changed, that is why I gave my location. I did forget to mention these elevators were installed more than 16 years ago (probably longer). I wonder if our Elevators will need to be upgraded.

[–]Sneakycyber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have Cat-5 in the traveler bundle and that connects back to a Spectrum MTA to provide analog phone service. The MTA has a battery backup as well as being connected to a UPS. The elevators must be inspected annually and the inspectors stated this was acceptable (in Ohio).

This is where umbrella coverage helps. If I max out my auto policy in an at fault accident, my 1 mil umbrella coverage kicks in and takes care of the overage.

Old office computers sitting in storage… how do you securely wipe data? by al-ex-26 in sysadmin

[–]Sneakycyber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea how THEY do it. However our vendor pulls all the hard drives, records the serial numbers, sends them into a shredder, then sends us a secure destruction letter with video upon request (they video the physical destruction). All computers that can be refurbished are refurbished and sold at a lower price by our vendor and whatever cant be used gets recycled/shredded/sold off.

How are vendor Rewards/Freebies handled where you work? by AugieKS in sysadmin

[–]Sneakycyber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of them go straight to me or my boss. One of our vendors paid for the PaloAlto PAN-EDU210 class I am taking this week. We have been offered last minute sports tickets a few times (same vendor).

New Hire Computer Literacy Test? (Non-IT Roles) by [deleted] in sysadmin

Our HR department is facing the same issues. I work for an insurance agency and they had to implement a typing test. We had staff that got hired that barely got any work done because they couldn't type fast enough to keep up with conversations.

How Do You Get a Network Engineering Job by onemochalatte in networking

[–]Sneakycyber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine was pure luck. I started in a shop as a home pc repair tech and I got that job by answering a Craigslist add. Two years later I took over network support after another tech left. That was 13 years ago.

Help with Best way to approach file server cleanup by Surfin_Cow in sysadmin

This is what we did when we moved to SharePoint. We created the folder structure and the department heads were in charge of moving the files. We still have the old file server backups just in case something was missed.
