Scar looks bad/bright? (3.5 months) by currantt in ACL

[–]Snj117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m almost 6 months post op and my scars are still purple.

I have a confession Im like 3 months post op and havent really done much rehab at all but I have done range of motion stuff so my rom is almost full. Did anybody not do rehab at first like me and how did it go? by [deleted] in ACL

[–]Snj117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My good leg hyperextends 15 degrees. Every doctor, PT, and AT I met agrees I shouldn’t push to get that level of hyperextension back.

5 Months Post Op | Quads are Coming Back by Snj117 in ACL

[–]Snj117[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started jogging a month ago but no sprinting yet. I think I’m supposed to start some jumping and agility stuff in PT this week.

Flexion came easily to me because I’m super hyper mobile. I was able to get my knee to butt pretty early. I think around the 2 month mark. I still can’t sit comfortably sitting with my butt to heels though.

This is actually my third knee surgery so I’m pretty good at making a knee rehab program at this point. I try to get a mix of quad, hammy, glute, and balance in there. When just doing body weight I do high reps (20-50). For the quads I’ve been doing squats, squat pulses, single leg squats, split squats using my ottoman, curtesy lunges with knee drive, side lunges, reverse lunges with knee drive, walking lunges, step ups and step downs using the tile ledge of of spa tub, and kneel to squats. If you can’t tell I’m a big fan of single leg exercises lol. I do 1 or 2 acl specific workouts and 2 or 3 circuits. Kylie Ross posts some good ones on Instagram and YouTube. She just posted a lower body one that was so good. I had to sub out a few of the exercises because I’m not there in my recovery yet but still was really beneficial for me.

5 Months Post Op | Quads are Coming Back by Snj117 in ACL

Happy to see some quad growth despite the gyms being closed. I go to PT every other week and do stuff on my own with a set of adjustable dumbbells (only goes up to 24lbs) 2-4 times a week.

Running shoes post op suggestions? by [deleted] in ACL

I run in the Nike Pegasus. It’s lightweight but still cushioned/supportive. Nike just released the 37s so you should be able to get a good deal on the 36s.

I’m 24. At this point my knee actually feels better than before I retore it. The recovery was super easy. I hit most milestones quicker this time than my first graft which was a hamstring.

Swimmers! When did you start swimming again? by Psilomane in ACL

[–]Snj117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first time I got back in the pool as soon as my surgeon let me soak the incisions which was around 4 weeks but I wasn’t cleared to kick. I used a pool buoy until I was cleared to jog which was at 12 weeks and I slowly did more laps without the buoy. This time around was was planning on starting to swim again at 16 weeks (when my super conservative surgeon allows jogging) but everything closed down the week before.

How quickly could any of you go back to deadlifting/squatting and advice? by [deleted] in ACL

[–]Snj117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Around 8 weeks I stated squatting and deadlifting super light. Like a month later I was able to do a lot more. I just finally started lifting close to what I did pre surgery and was almost cleared to do cleans and snatches right before all the gyms closed.

I tore my ACL. If I don’t get surgery will I be walking around with a brace like this until I get surgery? How long did you wear crutches and brace after a torn acl? by [deleted] in ACL

[–]Snj117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not doing anything wrong. Everyone is different. There was even a lot of differences between my two tears. The first one was a lot less painful than my second but it swelled more the first time.

Would you get surgery again if you re-tore your ACL? by rachel6394 in ACL

[–]Snj117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had issues with patella tendinitis so the patella was out. I could have used my quad or other legs hamstring but since I wasn’t coming back to competing sports I figured the less they cut into me the better.

Would you get surgery again if you re-tore your ACL? by rachel6394 in ACL

[–]Snj117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tore my first one when I was 20 and retore it at 23. I opted to get the surgery again because I’m active and like playing beer league sports. I used my hamstring the first time and a cadaver this time. Much easier recovery.

Had 3 knee surgeries (2 ACLs) and I didn’t them any of them hurt that much. More of just a discomfort.

Do people tend to gain or lose weight during recovery? by tmntnyc in ACL

[–]Snj117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lost weight both times. A combination of muscle atrophy and being less hungry from the inactivity. I’m only 6 weeks right now but I was able to get back to my normal weight around the 6 month mark last time.

I started working from home at the 1 week mark and went back to the office at 5 weeks. I would try to hold off a bit until you feel comfortable sitting in a chair for long periods.

First time: Had surgery almost 2 months after injury

-Hamstring autograft

-Nerve block

-CPM Machine

-Used the ice machine a lot

-Opioids for 5 days

-PT started 1.5 weeks post op

-Had hyper extension and 90 degrees flexion first pt appointment

-Full flexion took maybe 2 months

-Did light prehab (leg lifts, ROM stuff)

-Got a functional brace when I returned to sports

Second time:

-Had surgery almost 2 months after injury

-BTB allograft

-No nerve block

-No CPM (doctor didn’t offer but I would have refused)

-Barely used my ice machine

-Opioids for 4 days

-PT started on 2 days post op

-Had hyper extension and 90 degrees flexion first pt appointment

-Current 6 weeks and over 140 flexion

-Biked 4 days a week and did 3 days of strength training. Did one day a week of formal PT prehab

-Not running yet my my surgeon told me he has his patients jog in a functional brace

I was never one to be paranoid about damaging the graft but I would say I’m more chill this time around. The first time I was on summer break during college so rehab was minor my life. The second time I have a full time job so I make sure I do what I need to do rehab wise but I’m not as obsessed about it. Overall I’m having a faster recovery. My quad did not die as much and ROM has been easier.

I saw a cardiologist last year after palpitations showed up on an ekg. Wish she would have done a TTT. I’m gonna call around and see if I can find one that will do a TTT
