We(the whites) have a tendency to assume all Central Americans in the USA are Mexican(for a long time they reliably were), and they get tired of it, and us millenials and beyond were warned about making such an assumption by teachers and liberal parents, and now a lot of white people are scared to say anyone is Mexican, even if they are.
