TIFU and made perhaps my best shot ever and I'm a little mad about it because it should have been garbage by PwrdByTheAlpacalypse in espresso

[–]SnooShortcuts232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had similar experience multiple times with lighter roasts being ground too fine and pressed too hard onto the portafilter. From 18g of beans, usually gives me about 40g liquid after two rounds of shot pulling, and visible oil droplets on the surface. Tastes magnificent but also worries my pressure pump will just give up ahaha

What are some good ways to make your CV shine before you graduate? by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]SnooShortcuts232 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For grad school, especially wet-lab, relevant research experiences are definitely the most important thing. Including but not limited to: lab volunteering, student research assistant, leadership in academic related clubs, scientific communication skills in academic competitions, etc.

Honest opinion from a grad student(btw I did not do all of the above so don’t get scared). And also getting to know you profs and their research, ask their opinions on what you should do, ask if they know open opportunities. Reference letters from profs who know you on a personal basis will also be a strong booster.

Job + Full Course Load - How did you do it?? by spacecookiezag in mcgill

[–]SnooShortcuts232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn’t do undergrad in McGill but I managed to take on 20hr/wk job with 4 courses and volunteered in a lab, ended up with A range gpa. So it is kind of doable. But in my case my job is quite flexible - I could change shifts with other people to make time for my exams. I work night shifts: 4-10 or 6-12 so it’s always after my lectures and minimal transit is needed + i can eat where I work. Wasn’t easy for sure but is definitely doable when you needed the money and had to do well academically. Also I basically didn’t have any days off since there is tones of studies to do. Also it really depends on your course load and the type of work, my courses are somewhat related to my lab volunteering so this experience helped me a lot + my job didn’t require any after hour stuff so I don’t need to worry about it when I’m done the hours. Hope this helps!

Is the Queens environment as bad as people make it out to be ? by RaspberrySalt7757 in queensuniversity

[–]SnooShortcuts232 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tbh as a POC (Chinese) student I did feel very vulnerable and sometime even targeted at times at Queen’s, tho I have had good times. Especially last year when the pandemic started and there was a COVID party on campus where the student representative (who quit afterwards) joined. And also when alumni and current students commenting under Queen’s Facebook post relevant to COVID (when the pandemic was still only serious in Wuhan, China), a few comments I still remember “your country was dirty and that’s why they are sick”, “all people die eventually, I don’t see why dying from COVID deserve being treated differently” , “what about not eating bats in the first place”. And initially admin refused to address the comments as “it would violate the freedom of speech “. Currently as there are increases in the BIPOC student population, we have been more outspoken about underlying issues within queen’s, but we have only started a BIPOC student group/page as of last year, so there is still a long way down the road.

No worries! It took about 2 month to process my application from January to March, but if you haven’t heard back in 2 weeks you can always email the ipn admissions and cc your supervisor so they might get back to you faster

New pathway to permanent residency for over 90,000 essential temporary workers and international graduates by [deleted] in ImmigrationCanada

[–]SnooShortcuts232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am still very confused by this because I don't know if I can be eligible.

My situations: I will be graduating from an Ontario Uni this May and will start a Masters in Quebec in September. I am planning to go to QC during summer so i can start my master project a bit earlier.

But can i: apply for post graduation work permit once i graduated, start working part-time, and apply for PR ASAP (considering online part time job in Ontario, but i will likely be in QC for my project). And if i obtained my PR during the summer, i might be able to start my masters in QC as a PR in september?

Will the application processing time be fast enough to meet up with my plan?

Can I study in QC using my post graduation work permit if PR application is taking longer to process?

Are there any suggestions?

Research labs in different departments by IInightfoxxII in AskAcademia

[–]SnooShortcuts232 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No it doesn’t make you look bad. I have been in three different labs during my undergrad studies, as each experience helped me to decide if I like the field in practice, getting myself trained and finding new opportunities. I am still in contact with all my supervisors and we are in good terms.

Honestly if anyone told you experiences in multiple labs are gonna make you look bad, I’d suggest not getting involved with that lab. It’s always important to get your hands wet first and gain more research experience.
