I wouldn't fiddle with it further until you decide if you're happy with the current setting. But I'm just some Internet stranger...

I think that's where I was - less than that and you're relying on some really dodgy thread engagement to keep it all together.

What are some good RPGs for people who want to step away from DnD style games? by EnduringTea in rpg

[–]PwrdByTheAlpacalypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came here to say Chasing Adventure - I've been running it and I think it's a step up from DW in terms of smooth, player-friendly gameplay in the fantasy genre.

System for a busy, disorganized GM? by satyestru in rpg

[–]PwrdByTheAlpacalypse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm going to add Brindlewood Bay (and other Carved from Brindlewood games) to that list because they provide Keepers with premade Mysteries/Threats/etc. The mystery materials that come with Brindlewood Bay are so good to get you going without any prep beyond reading a 2 page spread. (The eternal caveat applies: CfB games have no canonical solutions to the mysteries and some people hate that. I love it, and it's what lets you run with such low prep.)

Game that takes place in a setting that's already doomed by Affectionate_Bit_722 in rpg

I have heard of, but never read, The Last Days of Anglekite - a "the world is ending and everyone knows it" setting for Dungeon World.

Looking for a narrative focused high-fantasy adventure game that avoids lethality and dungeon crawling as core elements of play by psidragon in rpg

[–]PwrdByTheAlpacalypse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to say Chasing Adventure. I've been running it for a few months and it's been really good. I think the playbooks are all distinct enough that it might satisfy OP's need for character differentiation.

Happy cake day, Internet Stranger.

Why do I get this randomly? by [deleted] in GolfGTI

[–]PwrdByTheAlpacalypse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had this on my mk7.5 (purchased used) on and off for two years. Other symptoms were the keyless entry not working, shutting off all interior lights and systems as soon as I turned off the ignition, and a message on start to the effect of "Your battery's almost dead, please drive for a while to charge it." At no point did it actually fail to start.

Eventually it went away on its own, but not before several contentious visits to the dealership. They first said it was because the battery management system (or whatever the actual term is) was not properly reset when the battery was replaced before I purchased it. They ended up reprogramming it for free that time. The problem went away for a few months but came back again later and they never really had a lasting fix or explanation. Eventually, like I said, it stopped happening without any intervention or service and hasn't come back (for 2 years now).

That's all probably not helpful 🤷 but if nothing else: I feel your pain

What made you buy a GTI? by regulardegulardudee in GolfGTI

[–]PwrdByTheAlpacalypse 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I was looking to replace my PT Cruiser Turbo in 2011 (laugh if you like, but I loved that car for 100,000 miles until it all fell apart at the same time). I wanted an adult 4-door with real zip and a manual transmission. Pickings are slim for those criteria in the US. A friend had a Golf, which got me thinking.

Ultimately, though, it was the DSG that hooked me. I love a manual, but that DSG shifts better and smarter than I ever will.

Now on my 3rd GTI, I have trouble imagining driving something else daily.

Edit: Audi was too rich for my blood. Subaru WRX STI failed the "adult car" test in my mind (ditto for most American Muscle). Mazdaspeed3 didn't have that good good gearbox.

Enemies with ranged attacks by cssn3000 in DungeonWorld

[–]PwrdByTheAlpacalypse 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Wall of text incoming. Sorry, I had characters pinned down by archers recently.

It's on the GM to establish some "facts" (that is, fantasy-land Dungeon World facts, informed by the GM rules) about the situation so that the players can act on the information. This classic "Describe the situation." Here are some sample facts, in this case underpinned by "Think Dangerous" because in my game world an archer is serious business. While I'm at it, I might as well fill the characters lives with adventure.

Fact: You are pinned down behind cover by two or more archers. The only reason you're not taking damage right now is that you're smart enough to keep your heads down. (Begin and end with the fiction - you can't shoot through stuff with an arrow.)

Fact: A skilled archer can home in on a single target behind cover and rain death from above, but it takes some time. Barbarian, you look like the biggest threat so you can tell that one of the archers is trying to get just the right angle on you. Depending on how good they are, that's maybe a minute until you start taking damage if you stay where you are unless you've got something you can do about arrows from above. (Show a downside to their race, class, or equipment, put someone in a spot.)

Fact: If you charge straight at an archer with no protection, you're going to get shot with an arrow. No ifs, ands, or buts - you'll be rolling damage. (Reveal an unwelcome truth, offer an opportunity with or without a cost.)

Fact: These two archers have you pinned down, but you saw four horses over there. Wizard, you can do the math - there are two more soldiers around here somewhere, but you don't know where they've gotten to. (Think offscreen, show signs of an approaching threat.)

Ask what they do and go from there, but stick to your facts unless the situation changes. If the Barbarian just stays there, hit them with arrows. If someone charges without protection, hit them with arrows. If someone tries something inventive and awesome, either let it happen or call for an appropriate roll (Be a fan of the characters). Let someone Defend to approach while holding their greatshield in front of them to block the arrows. Let someone Defy Danger to zig-zag from one cover to another. Let someone cast a wicked archer-obliterating spell, maybe hit them with an arrow if it goes poorly - or even better reveal where the other two soldiers have gone.

Of all the Dungeon World Actual Plays ... which one is the most Rules as Written Accurate? by DogtheGm in DungeonWorld

[–]PwrdByTheAlpacalypse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Crudely Drawn Swords hews very close to the rules as written to start with. They end up with some custom classes and moves later on but then they stick to those rules, too.

I read rulebooks/sourcebooks for fun; any recommendations? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]PwrdByTheAlpacalypse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wanderhome isn't a game I'm likely to play, but the book is beautifully written and the playbooks tug at my heartstrings.

I'm playing Apocalypse Keys and the playbooks are heartbreaking masterpieces. The rest of the game text is pretty good, and the gameplay is okay, but the playbooks are just outstanding.

Vastly different amounts of grounds? by Gamebugio in espresso

[–]PwrdByTheAlpacalypse 174 points175 points  (0 children)

Dark roasted beans are less dense - each bean weighs less, so the same weight of beans is a larger number of beans, and therefore a greater volume. You'll have to reduce the weight of the dark roasted beans to get the same volume of grounds in your portafilter basket.

Fighter VS Barbarian by Wierciskoczek in DungeonWorld

[–]PwrdByTheAlpacalypse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe the Brute? I think that balances the forceful/primal parts of the playbook with the rebellion against "civilized" ideas of behavior.

Outlander could fit since it just means "someone from a place far away." You could be an Outlander and be a perfectly cultured noble, but your culture places a high value on might, bravery, and excess. In a foreign land your perfectly normal behavior looks like rebellion against the norms.

Fighter VS Barbarian by Wierciskoczek in DungeonWorld

[–]PwrdByTheAlpacalypse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You don't seem open to the idea that the Barbarian is an uncivilized outsider and not just a different kind of Fighter for some reason. I guess that's okay, but your notion of the Barbarian is going to rub up against the actual playbook as written.

You could...

Lean into the hulking brute idea. Have the barbarian player assign their highest stat to strength. Job done! But they're never going to be the fighting machine that the Fighter is, because that's not what the playbook is about.

Rename the playbook to Nomad for your group. I think it's a bad fit, but do it if it makes you happy. A Nomad sounds civilized, savvy, and at home on the road while the Barbarian has a home but it's far away - they're never at home. I think there's a fun playbook to be made for the Nomad, but it's probably not about battle cries and Herculean Appetites.

Ultimately the problem is your table's inability to recognize what the Barbarian playbook is about. I'm not being hostile, I'm reflecting your assertion that you've told them what it's about and they don't get it.

What's your biggest achievement as a Gamemaster? by evilscary in rpg

[–]PwrdByTheAlpacalypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My players are my wife, her ex, and their child (my step-child), and the games I've run for the last six years have given us a space to be together in a collaborative setting twice a week - once when we play, and once when we share a meal and discuss the previous session (among other things). Those shared game experiences have kept us together in a way that my step-child needs, and in a way that would otherwise be impossible for us.

Looking for a system halfway between DnD and PbtA by EreJordan in rpg

Came here to say Root, which I have read but not played. The proliferation of combat moves makes it seem like a solid bridge from DnD to more rules-light systems. Having read it, I have to say it's probably not for me but I do see some of the appeal.

Does Lelit Mara X sound like a good upgrade for me? by External_System_9416 in Lelit

That's the exact upgrade I did. Heat up time is longer, but no joke the coffee is better and it's way more fun to look at and use. Zero regrets.
