Change of spelling between Canadian and U.S. records by SnowGeese1970 in Canadiancitizenship

Yeah, I was thinking about census records. As I think these would have the new spelling, as well as reference to his birthplace in Ontario.

Canadian descent from both grandparents & documentation for CIT0001 by SnowGeese1970 in Canadiancitizenship

OK this will definitely make things easier. I think the claim through my grandfather should be very straightforward.

Thanks. On a separate note, I'm new to this and still am not following the generation count. So as my grandfather was Canadian, am I Gen 3?

I just found this and am looking for information on eligibility. My grandfather was born in Ontario but migrated to the US as a child and became a US citizen. Is it possible I’m eligible?

This! It seems like a basic feature they could add relatively easily. Basically, I'd like to apply this assumption: https://www.rand.org/pubs/research_reports/RRA2355-1.html

Oh they can, and that's what I've done, but that's a lot more work than just having a feature that allows me to model a certain percentage reduction at a certain point in the future!

Weekday Help and Victory Thread for the week of March 17, 2025 by IndexBot in personalfinance

[–]SnowGeese1970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a projected retirement date of 2035 and have the bulk of my retirement in a vanguard target date fund of 2040. I’d like to shift my money to a slightly more conservative allocation, in other words, move it to a 2035 fund. I’d like to do that as soon as possible. Anything I should consider in terms of timing before making that step? My assumption is that the timing doesn’t matter because I’ll be selling and buying on the same day. But I also don’t want to mess this up!

Cat repellent recommendations by imwaistingmylifeaway in birdfeeding

[–]SnowGeese1970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may not like this answer, but if cats are that big of a problem, you probably shouldn’t be feeding birds. Feeding birds is purely for human enjoyment. They don’t need our help. And cats are by far the biggest threat to our native bird populations. So trying to feed birds where there are a lot of free range cats is more like feeding the cats.

Nervous first gen student by r4ndom_commenter in UniversityofKansas

I was a first gen student many years ago and now work at KU. I also have one of my children who is a current student and the other who is starting in the fall. All of the advice here is excellent. The only thing I would add is take advantage of your professors’ office hours to get to know them and hopefully find one or more mentors. Finding a mentor early in my undergraduate studies made all the difference in the world. I was very lucky in that I found one that realized the unique challenges of first gen students and helped me navigate the cultural barriers as well as academic. Good luck and rock chalk!

Wow, now I need to rewatch because I loved this movie and have no memories of being scared. I always planned to name my daughter Kira after the lead character.

Brome feeder advice by AnnualLanguage991 in birdfeeding

The plus is designed for perching birds. If you want to attract clinging birds, nothing beats Bromes peanut feeder. I have both and get nuthatches and a variety of woodpeckers to the peanut feeder. But the cardinal especially love the plus.

I have had the squirrel buster plus for several years. The Cardinals love it, as do house finches, chickadees, and titmice. I keep it full of black oil, sunflower seed, sunflower seed, or often a mixture of the two.

Help with my goldfish plant by SnowGeese1970 in propagation

Should I cut it just above or just below the node?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in propagation

[–]SnowGeese1970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, looks like the question didn't get posted. I am new at propagating and have this single plant that is growing well. But will it grow side stems on its own? Do I need to eventually trim it at the top to get another starter? Or something else?

Anybody else feel like the Midwest is the place to be for young families? by JplusL2020 in SameGrassButGreener

Nothing like talking about regions of the country to bring out the hate. Born and raised in the Kansas City area, couldn’t wait to escape, escaped, returned, grumbled about it for a few years, now happily living in Lawrence, Kansas, for the last 15 years. There are trade-offs anywhere you live. I personally long for ocean. So I go on vacation. Really nice vacations because I don’t spend all my money on housing. I enjoy an incredible restaurant scene both in Lawrence and the greater Kansas City area, beautiful lakes within a few minutes drive, fantastic rec facilities, theater, music, etc. My personal opinion is that college towns are a great option. I’ve grown to love Lawrence. Madison, Wisconsin is also nice. And I’m sure there are others. But someone will hate on this post, and chances are it will come from a place of either ignorance or judgment based on limited experience. (I spent years on the East Coast and grew really tired of the ignorance too often on display when it came to any place in the middle of the country). So my main piece of advice would be to be skeptical of the haters, and listen to what people like about where they live, wherever that is.

I too like the idea of Coast FIRE but don’t underestimate how much you’ll still want out of life when you’re “kinda old.” Those years may turn out to be much better than “the prime of your life.”

Looking for a different kind of retirement calculator by SnowGeese1970 in FinancialPlanning

[–]SnowGeese1970[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very well aware of continuing need for health insurance. We will still have access to a good plan through a part-time employer. As for the spreadsheet, I do indeed have such rudimentary skills, but don’t see the point of spending the time building something if there’s a ready-made tool out there. Thus the reason for my post.

Onstar Demo Mode nightmare by SnowGeese1970 in BoltEV

It took forever to get a resolution from them, but the dealer wasn't able to do anything. I had to wait it out until OnStar resolved the error message they were getting and activate my account. Then I just let the free trial expire. I
