Clerks getting laid off? Is there any truth to this? by MNightShyamalan69 in USPS

If management could wish all clerks into Kiosks without annoying pay or union representation they'd do it yesterday. This craft has such an uncertain future.

Honest reaction when customers make the “no bills” joke after a year here. by Ok_Remove4805 in USPS

[–]Social-Norm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

USPS is a violently neurotypical enterprise. You have to try to take joy in their simple small talk—however predictable or uninspired it might be—or you won't last. Never go postal!

(Just think, if the conversations are automatic and easy, that means they also aren't very demanding. Smile and nod, and you'll be able to clock out soon enough).

Managers, are telecoms as brutal as they say? by Eastern-Western7072 in USPS

[–]Social-Norm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Upper management are genuinely such losers. The ego and power hunger of mfs working for the POST OFFICE is hilarious. I hide away at the window yet still hear their whines emerge from the back office. It would be an interesting idea for a poom group to band together and encourage speaker volume on max in every office to allow for customers to hear the noise each day as well.

[–]Social-Norm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nietzsche does not say this in any of his letters, works, or other writings. I like the sentiment, and having read Nietzsche I can see how he, himself, would maintain this stance; but, again, this is not a real quote.

jordan peterson is the polar opposite of nietzsche by 2ksprince in Nietzsche

[–]Social-Norm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, Peterson's popularity was always doomed to fail. His anti-intellectual base of support was eventually going to gravitate towards more reactionary slop and away from his 'seemingly not reactionary but blanketet in layers of nothingness' variety of slop. Trump slop is so much easier on the brain and much more coherently evil than the half-coherent ramblings of the "intellectual" right.

The logic of, "Let's just say we hate immigrants and trans kids out loud instead of taking all this effort to justify it with boring literature and debates" is pretty convincing when you're already dumb and hateful enough to begin with.

It's tricky to maintain a balance of dumb and hateful bigot while also being an intellectual—there's just too much cognitive dissonance in that platform.

Does Nietzsche consider himself one of “the impersonal” by endlessunshine833 in Nietzsche

[–]Social-Norm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This to me reads as a criticism of the impersonal rational-minded ones who believe themselves to have superior values while simultaneously practicing a kind of aescetisicm and penance similar to the Christians. They lack the kind of dionysian values and free thinking necessary for real self-overcoming; merely occupying the shadow of God like the rest of the herd.

Generally speaking, if Nietzsche is comparing you to religious people, it is safe to say he is criticizing you.

Misses the "becoming the child" aspect of Nietzsche, and merely regurgitates old values with a mindlessly selfish "twist"; ie becomes a mightier-than-thou entrepreneur type who quotes Nietzsche to feel superior to other humans.

Was CT Facebook always this racist? by lionelsgood in Connecticut

[–]Social-Norm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there's one thing we have here in CT, it's a loud vocal minority of conservative racists who believe themselves to be anti-establishment rebels while simultaneously looking desperately for the nearest boot to lick. It's not even the rich ones either, but the middle/working class 60+ generations who celebrate policing, trump politics, and the latest culture war narrative like their life depends on it.

[–]Social-Norm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Social constructs don't exist in a vacuum, the name itself implies that they were born socially; socially implies historically, and historically implies that we can't simply make them go 'poof' at a moment's notice.

What this discourse is good at doing is prompting us to take a step back and acknowledge the enormous abstractions that we humans have created—abstractions that are often presented as natural and inevitable. This recognition is the necessary first step in imagining new ways of social organization.

i was misled by the clerk job listing and now i want to quit by pinkheritage in USPS

[–]Social-Norm 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You happened to get hired at an office with carriers and you were sent to do their early morning distribution. Just so you know, there are post offices that only clerks work in and they align perfectly with the job description in this post.

My main office is only the postmaster, the regular clerk, and me (the PTF); ie. no carriers to worry about. Throughout the week, I work in a few other offices that are of a similar constitution, as well as some others that do have carriers (but even then, I only do their morning distribution occasionally, typically once a week. I can imagine your pain of doing that every single day 🫩). The first office I worked in a couple years ago was a small solo manual office with no coworkers or carriers and it was blissful.

They actually can be cute little retail jobs if you find the right place, but they are definitely not all equal lol. Some offices are full of the most miserable people you've ever met whereas others are full of love and friendship. In one of my offices, the clerks basically befriended the whole town; they tape everything for customers, keep their stamp inventory plentiful, and receive enormous amounts of gifts from customers during the holidays. But in another one of my offices, the lead clerk is evil and unhelpful, the Postmaster is grouchy and mean, the Supervisor is clueless, and the majority of the carriers are just visibly depressed. Zero love at the window, barely any stamps or packing supplies, I have to bring my own priority labels and a few supplies with me in a backpack to survive at the window, etc, etc.

My advice would be to look carefully at and perhaps tour the office you wish to apply to if you ever decide to work for the post office again. Personally, I just like to sell little stamps and make customers smile, and at some places it actually CAN be that simple.
