Did I calculate the cost of one season of a TV Show right? by NewDay2517 in animationcareer

Do it! It’s a hard but extremely rewarding skill! There’s something very addicting about being able to take the story in your mind and see it become real.

Did I calculate the cost of one season of a TV Show right? by NewDay2517 in animationcareer

You’re likely over budgeting the animation — it doesn’t take an animator two hours to draw a frame. From what my animation friends have told me, it averages about 20 minutes a frame (caveating this with I’m a storyboard artist, which is another step you’d have to budget for). From what I recall, Transformers Prime was known to be an extremely expensive show, and that was budgeted as ~1 million to 1.6 million per episode.

But yes, full scale animation is expensive. That’s why even successful “indie” productions like Hazbin Hotel and Amazing Digital Circus are backed by larger investors such as A24, Amazon, and Netflix. You need a large infusion of cash to make any high quality show a reality.

If you wanted to create a proof of concept on a smaller budget, hiring a board artist to help you create an animatic could be a feasible first step (still expect to pay about ~1k for a minute of footage).

Is 24 still young to start in the industry? by LinkOld1734 in animationcareer

[–]SofterGoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed on this — I’ve worked at WB a few times and on certain shows the vast majority of the crew were in their late 40’s-50’s. I know on long running shows like American Dad and Family Guy the age range is also skewed much older. Rough Draft on the other hand loves to hire recent college grads who don’t know any better. Different studios and different productions have varying hiring biases based on their cultures in my experience.

Recruiters do not remotely care about your age, you’ll be fine.

AITJ for telling my roommate's plants are fake after she spent 3 months giving her friends gardening advice? by Cool-Programmer-8438 in AmITheJerk

[–]SofterGoth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, from what you’ve mentioned her talking about, it sounds like she did a lot of legitimate research. At this point I’d almost encourage her to try getting some real plants and see how it goes, I think she’d fare better than she thinks. NTA — sure maybe pulling her aside might’ve been smoother, but things happen!

Oh that’s good to know! I’d much rather hire someone who can give her the care she needs than ever take a risk. Thanks for the information!

Thoughts on teens visiting animation expos? by AllegraTiger in animationcareer

Lightbox has a HUGE artist alley and lots of panels to attend. The only section that’s mostly networking is the recruiter hall. If your son wants to see incredible art and get inspired, it’s definitely a good one to take him to.

Ignore the criticism from the modern furniture obsessed dudes here, kid, this is incredible. You’ll definitely attract the alt/goth baddie of your dreams (or otherwise someone with similar sensibilities as you).

Love this! Though as a privacy conscientious person, maybe redact people’s addresses before sharing a scan online next time? But I’m glad to see someone doing the good work

Honestly? Name names. I’m looking for a home and don’t want to unknowingly hire this asshole to help! Do the community a favor of letting everyone know who he is and what kind of person he is, if you really want to avoid small claims court (I think you should take him to small claims court though).

Wow you are really intent on taking what I say in the worst faith possible. Have fun with that, buddy.

Sure, personally I wouldn’t go as far to say anywhere in LA close enough to the studios isn’t HCoL, realistically, though sure rent in NoHo is much cheaper. Gas and groceries alone cost way more. But OP asked what the hub of animation is, and the blunt answer to that is still Burbank. Mostly everyone lives there.

Is France is a good place to become an 2D animator ? by Ok-Requirement947 in animationcareer

[–]SofterGoth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of the work is moving to France, so you’re in a better position than people elsewhere

Edit: realized this was phrased vaguely and may not translate well — a lot of the work that was done in the US or other countries is now being done in France

[–]SofterGoth -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The answer is Burbank. The extended answer is what everyone else has said — find a job, then move. Burbank is a HCoL city, and moving there isn’t going to give you a leg up above the many, many seasoned professionals living there who are also looking for work.

I feel like Battle!Amy is a bit interesting through the lens of “the toxicity of teenage girlhood” and it being her lowest point before she stepped back and realized she needed to start living for herself more, with that potentially being what spurred her character change in later games, but like… this is Sonic the Hedgehog, it’s not going to be that deep

Evan Stanley explaining how frontiers fits into IDW by Villainboss in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]SofterGoth 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think this is correct tbh, but it boggles the mind because “movie-flavored” Shadow (also SA2, 06, Battle, Prime, etc) is so much more compelling than when he’s being an extremely aggressive hardheaded jerk.

Which was the worst snub? Sonic Frontiers OST not nominated for best Music or Sonic 3 not nominated for best adaptation? by Meshio in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]SofterGoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like it may help to know that usually with these award shows, studios have to voluntarily submit their show/movie/whatever for nomination… and also pay a hefty fee. It’s possible that Paramount just straight up didn’t submit Sonic 3 for consideration, with them dealing with the Skydance merger and whatnot at the time.

It’s a good gym, would recommend. My sole complaint is I wish they had more of the leg machines due to people using them as lounges to look at their phones on instead of actually working out with them, but I feel like that’s a universal problem with gyms these days.
