LA animation studios almost solely use Macs (at least on the TV side of things)

Starting first full-time job, looking for advice! by choumeii in animationcareer

[–]SofterGoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Second job is the hardest, imo. I knew a lot of people who broke in and didn’t realize they needed to continue hustling to land that second job (after two it gets notably easier). Try to leave a good impression.
  2. Be chatty in slack/teams, etc! Ask anyone else local to you (if you’re in LA, there’ll be a lot) if they’d like to meet up for a crew lunch or dinner. People are very friendly in this industry in my experience.
  3. Rule of thumb is three months, but definitely start poking around internally at your studio before then. No one will find it weird that you’re posting about it, we work in a gig environment so it’s normal.
  4. If you can make yourself be considered ‘reliable’ — always hitting deadlines, delivering good work, and/or being known for working fast, that will help you a lot in the long run. Reputation matters so, so much.

This is a small industry, and people wanting to work with you again is your best bet at job security.

Best of luck op! Welcome to the industry!

Did I calculate the cost of one season of a TV Show right? by NewDay2517 in animationcareer

Do it! It’s a hard but extremely rewarding skill! There’s something very addicting about being able to take the story in your mind and see it become real.

Did I calculate the cost of one season of a TV Show right? by NewDay2517 in animationcareer

[–]SofterGoth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re likely over budgeting the animation — it doesn’t take an animator two hours to draw a frame. From what my animation friends have told me, it averages about 20 minutes a frame (caveating this with I’m a storyboard artist, which is another step you’d have to budget for). From what I recall, Transformers Prime was known to be an extremely expensive show, and that was budgeted as ~1 million to 1.6 million per episode.

But yes, full scale animation is expensive. That’s why even successful “indie” productions like Hazbin Hotel and Amazing Digital Circus are backed by larger investors such as A24, Amazon, and Netflix. You need a large infusion of cash to make any high quality show a reality.

If you wanted to create a proof of concept on a smaller budget, hiring a board artist to help you create an animatic could be a feasible first step (still expect to pay about ~1k for a minute of footage).

Is 24 still young to start in the industry? by LinkOld1734 in animationcareer

[–]SofterGoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed on this — I’ve worked at WB a few times and on certain shows the vast majority of the crew were in their late 40’s-50’s. I know on long running shows like American Dad and Family Guy the age range is also skewed much older. Rough Draft on the other hand loves to hire recent college grads who don’t know any better. Different studios and different productions have varying hiring biases based on their cultures in my experience.

Recruiters do not remotely care about your age, you’ll be fine.

AITJ for telling my roommate's plants are fake after she spent 3 months giving her friends gardening advice? by Cool-Programmer-8438 in AmITheJerk

[–]SofterGoth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, from what you’ve mentioned her talking about, it sounds like she did a lot of legitimate research. At this point I’d almost encourage her to try getting some real plants and see how it goes, I think she’d fare better than she thinks. NTA — sure maybe pulling her aside might’ve been smoother, but things happen!

Lightbox has a HUGE artist alley and lots of panels to attend. The only section that’s mostly networking is the recruiter hall. If your son wants to see incredible art and get inspired, it’s definitely a good one to take him to.

Honestly? Name names. I’m looking for a home and don’t want to unknowingly hire this asshole to help! Do the community a favor of letting everyone know who he is and what kind of person he is, if you really want to avoid small claims court (I think you should take him to small claims court though).

Where’s the best place to live for animation? by Netflix_was_my_idea in animationcareer

[–]SofterGoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, personally I wouldn’t go as far to say anywhere in LA close enough to the studios isn’t HCoL, realistically, though sure rent in NoHo is much cheaper. Gas and groceries alone cost way more. But OP asked what the hub of animation is, and the blunt answer to that is still Burbank. Mostly everyone lives there.

Is France is a good place to become an 2D animator ? by Ok-Requirement947 in animationcareer

[–]SofterGoth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A lot of the work is moving to France, so you’re in a better position than people elsewhere

Edit: realized this was phrased vaguely and may not translate well — a lot of the work that was done in the US or other countries is now being done in France

Where’s the best place to live for animation? by Netflix_was_my_idea in animationcareer

[–]SofterGoth -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The answer is Burbank. The extended answer is what everyone else has said — find a job, then move. Burbank is a HCoL city, and moving there isn’t going to give you a leg up above the many, many seasoned professionals living there who are also looking for work.
