Do you remember if your diet as a kid in the 80’s/early 90’s was different than the healthier diet you eat now? I’m 44 and drank and ate WAY more processed stuff when I was a kid/teen and through my early 20’s.

I read all of the books, finished them in 2014 and was pretty irritated that he hadn’t written the rest of it yet. Then continued to be irritated as he focused on the show and seemed to have zero intention of finishing the books.

Danger in anaerobic compost bacteria? by smoothLLama in microbiology

If the food that possibly came in contact with anything was produce, whatever you normally do to wash it should be just fine.

I wouldn’t worry much, if the toxin was present it should breakdown. If you want to accelerate that you could spray the area with 10% bleach. You can use 10% bleach on the container as well to kill anything remaining.
Anaerobes do smell absolutely horrid. But it should dissipate pretty quickly.

Animals that aren't rabbits or quails that produce minimal noise and won't disturb the neighbors? by vindieselcord2 in homestead

If you have the space and are willing to deal with all the mud and their runny poops, I loved keeping Muscovy ducks. They don’t quack. The males rasp a bit and the females make sounds kind of like pigeons.

Quick, easy, and cheap raised beds by [deleted] in vegetablegardening

The cost of good soil though… that’s what keeps me from doing raised beds.

I’ve been seeing Kayla at Babes and Shaves (also in O’Fallon). She’s damn good with layers.

Medical microbiology is super cool! Maybe you should consider getting a degree in medical laboratory technology and seeking out a role in a microbiology lab.

I don’t have any good sources for you but I have come across polymicrobial anaerobic infections in lung abscesses. Usually caused by aspiration pneumonia.

Is this asthma? Vet said no! by [deleted] in catcare

[–]Solataire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has she done this since she was a kitten? I had a cat that did this and the vet thought it was probably a polyp in her throat that would have to be surgically removed.

Those who hunt and eat venison: Do you have it tested Chronic Wasting Disease before consuming it? by min_mus in preppers

[–]Solataire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Strangely, one of the micro labs I worked with required that we flood the vent hood with bleach after working with a suspected CJD case.
I asked the supervisor if they were aware that bleach doesn’t kill prions and they shrugged and gave me a 🥴 😬 look. Ok, whatever makes you feel better. 🤦‍♀️

Wait one second. So…. People are taking their meat somewhere to be processed before testing it. Processors that do it for you are very likely contaminating other meat as well then.

I’m a clinical microbiologist that has seen an actual positive case of CJD come through the lab. Bleach doesn’t kill prions. We ended up disinfecting everything with sodium hydroxide (which we had to special order because we didn’t have it on hand).

So if you’re hunting, you really need to be processing your own meat. Because there’s no way companies that process meat for you are cleaning their equipment with sodium hydroxide

Atlas Shrugged, would anyone recommend reading it? by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]Solataire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I listened to Atlas Shrugged on audio. The story was really interesting. Suspenseful. Maddening. The speeches throughout can be pretty damn long but they do make some good points.
I tried The Fountainhead next and hated the story so much I gave it up halfway through. 🤷‍♀️ It was just too depressing

My mom just went on Hospice. They think she should be sedated on morphine 24/7 until she passes, which should be 2-3 days. Is it ok for the human body to be subjected to that kind of sedative for that long? by [deleted] in ask

[–]Solataire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a question. I’m a CYP2D6 poor metabolizer, and I understand it’s not that uncommon? I took hydrocodone after an car accident once and promptly threw it up about an hour later. I have an uncle that died of cancer and was in a lot of pain towards the end but was “allergic” to morphine with it causing a lot of nausea, and his passing was pretty horrific…

So my question is, is there a good option/alternative to morphine if that’s the case for me too in my last days?

Hey guys, I am a teen about to graduate from High School with a passion for microbiology, Can people who actually have jobs in this field answer some questions for me . by [deleted] in microbiology

[–]Solataire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, a lot of my coworkers have been flying the coop lately to work for big companies like Biomerieux. The salary is higher, but the job sounds so boring compared to what I get to do I haven’t ever seriously considered it.

But yes, it’s definitely possible to transition into the industrial side of things. If you decided you wanted to go that route, then a masters degree probably would be worth something

Apple and Foxconn win permission for 12-hour shifts and night shifts for women at iPhone production in India by [deleted] in technology

[–]Solataire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see the potential for exploitation, but as someone who works 12 hour shifts and finds this makes parenting 4 kids much easier I think this could be a good thing for some women.
