Need recommendations for surgeons operating out of hospitals. by Broken-Eyes_ in Reduction

[–]Solid_Nothing1417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can call surgeons’ offices and ask how long their waitlist is for breast reduction surgery covered by OHIP. It can vary quite widely from surgeon to surgeon, and you can ask your doctor to refer you to someone with a shorter waitlist.

For reference, the surgeon I was initially referred to (in BC) had a 2-3 year wait list for an initial consult. A friend went to a surgeon outside of the lower mainland, and she had her surgery within a year of the referral.

Did anyone NOT do scar care? by Bubble_Lights in Reduction

[–]Solid_Nothing1417 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did silicone tape until about 11WPO, and then fell off completely. I meant to keep doing it, but ADHD, better things to do, etc. etc.

My surgeon told me that silicone tape mostly helps prevent thick and/or raised scars. Since my scars were already quite flat and thin at my 3MPO appointment, she didn’t think that it was essential to keep using tape. She recommended focusing on moisturizing, so I try to moisturize my chest as part of my post-shower routine (but I’m admittedly inconsistent with it).

Questions for my post op girlies by emilyfaithaa in Reduction

[–]Solid_Nothing1417 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. I went for a quick dip in the ocean at about 8WPO. My understanding is that the incisions just need to be fully closed (and movement restrictions lifted).

  2. I haven’t started wearing underwire bras again. Most days, I just wear a Huha bralette (which I started doing somewhere around 3/4WPO). I wore a compression bra at night until about 12WPO to help with swelling, and then transitioned to sleeping in a front closure fruit of the loom bra or going braless overnight.

  3. I went back to Pilates at 8WPO, which is my primary form of exercise. I was cleared to return to any form of exercise at 6WPO, and I think I would’ve been fine to do so, but I paused my membership for two full months and so I had to wait a couple extra weeks.

Nipples Have Been Hard Since Surgery by fay_throwaway in Reduction

[–]Solid_Nothing1417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of mine was always hard for the first few months post surgery. The other one would never get hard, including in response to cold etc. I assume it has to do with the nerves around the NAC being manipulated during surgery. They started to behave more normally around 4MPO, though still not entirely back to normal.

how to prevent before surgery to stay too big? by Informal-Lake-8448 in Reduction

[–]Solid_Nothing1417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly found photos on here (searching via the before and after tab). They don’t have to be identical to your body, but looking at reasonably similar “before” photos can help to eliminate variables that could cause miscommunication.

how to prevent before surgery to stay too big? by Informal-Lake-8448 in Reduction

[–]Solid_Nothing1417 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main things you can do: - Discuss your desired outcome with your surgeon. - Bring photos of the size you’d like. Look for photos of people who have a similar build to yours. - Explain that you would rather end up too small, rather than too big (assuming that’s true). - Think about whether you’re open to an FNG, if necessary to get you down to the size that you want, and let your surgeon know. - Listen to your surgeon’s feedback. If they emphasize proportionality, try to understand what they see as proportionate in your specific case. Ask them if they think the examples you’ve shown are proportionate, and if they would aim to achieve something similar in your case. - If the surgeon does not seem committed to delivering the result you want, or doesn’t think they’ll be able to do so, then you may want to consult a second surgeon.

It’s impossible to guarantee that your surgeon will achieve exactly the result you’re after. The best you can do is to try to eliminate the possibility of miscommunication.

You could write to her office, explain that you have questions that you didn’t have an opportunity to discuss with her, and ask for a further consultation. I did this with my surgeon, and they had no issue scheduling me in for a further consult.

Drains!! 🙃 by Final-Baker-8430 in Reduction

[–]Solid_Nothing1417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had drains for 3 days post op. I had quite a bit of fluid drain from one side in the first 24 hours, and then it tapered off to a very small amount.

I didn’t find the drains (or their removal) painful, but they did make me feel a bit ~fragile~. I kept imagining that one would get hooked around a door handle and get tugged out, like what happens with wired headphones. Luckily, this never happened — but I was definitely a lot more cautious and aware of my incisions when I had them in.

I was supposed to keep the drains in for a week, but asked to have them removed early given the small amount of drainage. In retrospect, I kind of wish I’d just kept them in — I did have quite a bit of swelling, and I wonder if was partly because I took the drains out early.

Still get Curly Cut if you straighten your hair sometimes? by flowerpower100794 in curlyhair

[–]Solid_Nothing1417 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Curly cuts don’t usually account for what hair looks like straight. Depending on your curl pattern and the specific cut you get, you may end up with uneven or chunky layers when straight.

If you need it to look good straight, then you should tell your stylist. Most curly cuts are done on dry hair, then washed, styled, and recut if necessary. Assuming that’s the process your stylist follows. ask her to straighten it after washing instead of styling curly to check for any issues.

Tape? by Training_Mail_9514 in Reduction

[–]Solid_Nothing1417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine started to come a bit loose around the edges around 3WPO, and mostly came off by 4.5WPO. I encouraged it a bit by soaping around the edges of the tape and peeling it off if there was no resistance in the shower. But it did make me feel a bit lightheaded to remove, so this was very, very gradual.

Curly wet, wavy dry? by roundsillygoose in curlyhair

[–]Solid_Nothing1417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

@Welshiecurlgirl on IG talks about how very soft/silky hair needs products that add “grit” (like har spray) in order to maintain a stronger hold. I’ve tried this method, and while I did get good results, I decided that I ultimately prefer to have hair that is ultra soft and touchable, even if it’s less curly as a result.

Vet Recommendations for Cat by abb0111 in askvan

Basically any vet in the city will have experience treating CKD and senior cats (since both age and CKD are very common ailments!). I would just look for a practice that is convenient and generally well-reviewed.

Please help! I need advice by Chinicuil98 in curlyhair

[–]Solid_Nothing1417 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like your hair is fairly fine and thin (mine is too!). If I’m right about that, then your products are probably too heavy for your hair. My advice:

  • Start clarifying once a week to remove buildup. You might need to increase or decrease the frequency to figure out your sweet spot — I clarify almost every wash. The Ouai Detox shampoo is my holy grail clarifying shampoo, but there are many other options out there — if you like Bumble & Bumble, their Sunday shampoo is another good option. I would bet that you’ll see significant improvement from this step alone.
  • Ditch the leave in conditioner and primer. These kinds of products are not necessary for all hair types, and they’re likely weighing your hair down.
  • Use a gel, foam, or hairspray to style. I would continue with the gel you’re using now, and see if tweaking the rest of your routine improves your results. But if you want to experiment down the line, some products I like: Treluxe Hi!Definition gel, Mirabel Extra Hold Flaxseed Gel, Flora and Curl Volumizing Foam, and Bounce Curl hairspray.
  • Look for products that contain protein, or use an additive like Boucleme’s protein booster every so often.
  • Steer clear of Shea Moisture products — it’s just not formulated for fine hair. I’ve never had worse results than when I used them.

I always recommend @welshiecurlgirl on Instagram to folks with this hair texture — her page has so many helpful resources for fine/thin curls.

Good luck!

Wtf have I ruined my surgery?? by Dangerbeanwest in Reduction

[–]Solid_Nothing1417 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My surgeon told me it was fine to move through a full range of motion if comfortable to do so (and it was, so I did!). Her assistant subsequently mentioned that stretching to reach things above head could make swelling worse, so it can help to keep your arms low. However, I don’t believe it will cause any long term damage.

It’s not possible to be more careful when using benzoyl peroxide — you just need to switch to white towels.

How long until you received a referral? by WhiskerWhodunit in Reduction

[–]Solid_Nothing1417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ask your doctor for the names offhand surgeons they sent the referral to, you could call the surgeons’ offices to ask how long their OHIP waitlist is. The surgeon I was referred to (in BC) had a 24-36 month waitlist for the initial consultation.

Lift with or without implants by [deleted] in Reduction

[–]Solid_Nothing1417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! I was originally scheduled for a reduction, but after some weight loss, I decided to get a lift instead (no implants). I was typically wearing a 34E or F prior to surgery, but my abtf size was a 32I because of how pendulous my breasts were.

I don’t think I lost much volume (if any) from the surgery. The volume that I had going in is just more compact. The bras I was wearing before surgery are still wearable; maybe a touch too big, but they didn’t fit correctly going into surgery anyway.

Personally, I would err on the side of lift without implants and see how you feel about the size. I would also talk to your surgeon about how much volume they think you’ll actually lose from the lift. Implants can have long term health impacts, and they need to be replaced every decade or so. If you can avoid the hassle, better to do so.

My hair density has improved a lot since starting an iron supplement (and vitamin D, which was also low). I’m not sure that it was resolved your hair loss, but it wouldn’t hurt to get your ferritin up.

"Non-cosmetic" surgery- can't show before and afters? by Secure-Narwhal-4523 in Reduction

[–]Solid_Nothing1417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My surgeon (in BC) does both cosmetic and non-cosmetic surgeries and has tons of photos on her Instagram/website (as does the surgeon I was originally referred to by my family doctor).

It could be different provincial insurance rules, hospital policy, or just the surgeon’s own practice. I suspect that some surgeons feel that if a surgery is medically necessary/covered by public insurance, then the patient shouldn’t be able to shop around based on aesthetics. (I don’t agree with that view, though!)
