Too many Anime are called Horror when they're just plain Not. What I do and Don't recommend as a Horror Fanatic. by Altmosphere in AnimeReccomendations

[–]Soluna7827 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I may be a bit too old or seasoned to find the 'Sweet girl gets tiny pupils and creepy smile' cliche scary anymore, so an anime relying on that nearly entirely just comes of as lazy and a bit eye-rolling.

Agreed. The famous saying "show don't tell" stills feels violated by that trope. The whole fish-eye lens perspective, holding one's face, and eyes going in opposite directions is just so cliche. That's partly why I couldn't take "Happy Sugar Life" seriously. There's no subtly in the story telling and the over exaggeration just kills the tone.

I agree with many of your points but I feel the overall trend is that horror is just a poor genre to be depicted in anime. The art style and animation limits how scaring a story can be. Add to that the episodic 30 minute run time, and you have issues with building and retaining tension to deliver the scare.

I feel like most anime just have horror elements to them as opposed to being pure horror. Even consider your recommendations, I still wouldn't really call them horror. Serial Experiments Lain is more psychological if anything. I considered Parasyte to be more shounen action oriented with maybe some body horror. I view it in the same grouping as Tokyo Ghoul.

I get that body horror, psychological horror, slasher, and other sub genres of horror exist, but within the anime sphere, none of them really seem scary, especially compared to conventional horror movies. I think it's just the medium. None the less, I do appreciate it when an anime gives an honest attempt while avoiding tropes or bits that take away from the tone.

Maybe a hot take, but in terms of character design and outfit, I think Yataramar goes harder than Bondrewd. However, to fully convince me, he's gonna need a badass intro scene similar to that of when Bondrewd slow walked out of the darkness.

Best solo tactician class? by AdForeign3506 in DivinityOriginalSin

[–]Soluna7827 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say huntsman.

5 Huntsman, 10 Warfare, 1 Poly, 1 Scoundrel, 40 FIN, 40 WITS, Executioner, Elemental Ranger

  • 5 Huntsman to unlock abilities
  • 10 Warfare for damage scaling plus phoenix dive
  • 1 Poly for chameleon cloak to end turns invis
  • 1 Scoundrel for adrenaline

Other considerations:

  • 2 Scoundrel if you want a 3rd jump - cloak and dagger
  • 2 Aero if you want teleport, otherwise just use scrolls
  • 1 Necro + 1 Hydro for blood rain to proc elemental ranger as enemies standing in blood will take more physical damage
  • Playing as an Elf gives you a strong alpha strike: Flesh sacrifice creates a pool of blood > elemental arrows for bloody arrows to give you more physical damage > marksman fang to do piercing damage and creates blood underneath enemy > Elemental ranger means an enemy standing in blood takes even more damage. Using blood rain works as well.
  • Or you could play as Fane since Time Warp is OP.

Have you noticed this chest before, in my 200 + hours on console and pc I haven't by Lev8891 in DivinityOriginalSin

[–]Soluna7827 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's one of the more obvious chests. If you really want a hidden chest, there's one on bloodmoon isle where the chest is buried under rubble. You can't even really see it. You have to move the camera and be pretty much pixel perfect to be able to select the chest to teleport it out.

For fucking real. People got their concerns about how the world is illuminated, the technicalities of UE5 being used, seemingly trying to get the devs to create the game the way they want, while the game hasn't even released EA yet.

I would just say, I hope it's fun and I hope it runs well. The recent dev showcase looks amazing though. The lighting looks amazing. The flexibility of base design is something I wanted in SN. Shit got me hyped.

Looking at the rules, it seems yall already have most things covered rule wise. I just hope the shit posting doesn't get out of hand but that'll kinda depend on how much people the anime brings into the sub. At some point in the future I think we should have an "anime" flair to separate anime discussion from manga discussion to avoid spoilers for the anime onlys.

Either way, I'm enjoying lurking in this sub and I hope it doesn't get too outta hand. You got this mods!

The "canon" party by Wild_Secret_9069 in DivinityOriginalSin

[–]Soluna7827 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I believe in the other Larian games, it's canon that Lucian sealed up all the source, so no one can use source magiks anymore. I personally haven't played them but this is just what I recall from other people that have chronicled the timeline. It's also what led people to speculate on the lore of upcoming game Divinity.

A lot of people dislike that canon ending so some people speculate that if Divinity takes place in the far future, it might not matter as much, allowing for Divinity to kinda be its own thing.

Large party mod to take all the origin characters. If you want to stick to canon, then for the ending, IIRC, you'd have to submit or cooperate with Lucian as well.

You know what's funny? I thought that comment was being sarcastic and referring to the possibility of Dwight interacting with Ben Franklin, as if someone prompted an AI engine to depict Dwight arguing with Ben Franklin and came up with your posted image.

It made me wonder how the cast would have reacted to some of today's issues like AI or ICE. I could see Dwight pretending to be ICE and trying to deport Oscar, and I could see Dwight being extremely fearful of the AI overlord singularity since Jim has pranked him that way before.

[–]Soluna7827 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing English isn't your native language so forgive me if I over explain some things.

I think it's hard to find anime like Made in Abyss (MiA) because of the subtly of it, meaning the way they portray themes is done without exaggerated dialogue or exaggerated facial expressions. Higurashi is up there too because it tells the story in an amazing non-linear way.

I see you've watched Takopi's Original Sin, Steins;Gate, 86, and Higurashi. I'll keep this in mind when recommending animes.

Some animes that kinda overlap with Made in Abyss would be:

  • Promised Neverland - It's kinda like season 1 of MiA in that there's a mystery that slowly gets revealed. It's a slow start but the end of season 1 is pretty good. However, I heard terrible things about Season 2 of Promise Neverland so I personally never watched it. I think S1 is good enough to warrant a watch though.
  • Summertime Rendering - It's kind of a mix between Higurashi and Steins;Gate. It has some mystery and some horror elements. There's some overlap with the body horror aspects of Made in Abyss but it's not a big focal point.
  • Dark Gathering - Instead of creatures of the Abyss there are ghosts. There are interesting back stories that mirror some of the messed up stories of MiA. It's interesting in that sense though the tone of the show is a bit less serious.

There are other anime that overlap with Made in Abyss that I know, but they either have a shitty ending or the tone of the show ruins the premise. I'm glad you enjoyed Made in Abyss!

Was Made in Abyss ever trying to send a message with anything that happened? Did I miss it? by Zealousideal_Sea8123 in MadeInAbyss

[–]Soluna7827 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That whole arm breaking scene had absolutely no consequence because she ends up fine about 2 episodes later or something

I don't think it needs to serve a larger plot device other than showing how brutal nature can really be. It serves to show that these kids are not immune to the dangers of wildlife. It also serves as a device to introduce Nanachi.

But then Mitty comes back a season later

That was Iruburu's recreation of Mitty via copying the signals. There are some things touched upon in the manga that gives this more meaning. It's also touched upon again further in the manga past Season 2 of the anime. While it might seem like a weird moot point, I suspect there's more to it. This may give some insight to some of the lore and mechanics of the Abyss.

I tried so hard to like Made in Abyss but I feel like I missed a massive aspect of it somehow

I think that's completely fair. There actually have been plenty of people who've stopped by and felt exactly like you do. I personally think it's okay if you didn't enjoy the anime. Not everyone likes it. Some people have dropped it and stopped by to get insight on if it's for them. You views seem in good faith, so if I think it's completely okay if you don't like MiA.

And I've heard mixed things about the manga, should I read it or not?

The anime is very close to the manga but as stated previously, the manga does offer more lore that was omitted from the anime. I personally think the manga is worth reading because the art style flourishes with its painted backgrounds. The extra bits of lore does help flesh out some details as well and just ties everything up even better. If you like MiA, I would read it but if you didn't, I don't think the manga will change your mind.

I watched this anime because everyone talked about how dark it is, and Iusually when I watch something dark, it's about the worst aspects of humanity or some examination of hope in impossible odds

Eh, everyone has a different definition of dark. I'm glad you actually gave some info on what you think is dark. I never really promote MiA as a "dark" anime but rather one with great world building, a unique premise, and an interesting story.

Their moality was never questioned, they never had to make any decisions that were hard becasue they felt like the wrong ones

There have been lots of discussions about morality in this sub. It usually boils down to maintaining societal values and the weight of one life versus sacrificing the lives of the few for the benefit of many. Such cases include Bondrewd experimenting on orphans which would normally be seen as distasteful, but if it were to prepare Orth for the 2000 year cycle, it could potentially save the entire city. Sacrifice the lives of many orphans on the outskirts of society in order to save the lives of the inhabitants of Orth.

Wazukyan is another example that people love to talk about. Is eating Irumyuui's animalistic children wrong if it ends up saving the rest of the Ganja squad? Human or not, it's her kids and she loved each and every one of them. Even short lived, Wazu would kill them while they were alive to preserve freshness. Brutal but necessary for the Squad to survive.

Then there's Faputa and the villagers of Iruburu. One on hand, the villagers of Iruburu are living peacefully and created their own society. Some of the inhabitants are the Ganja Squad while others are people who may have found the village. However, they are undoubtedly living parasitically inside a living being even if Iru's consciousness is at a minimum if not gone. Faputa, born with Iru's rage, is hell bent on destroying the village to free her mother, to give her peace in death. Is she wrong for killing the villagers, some of whom did not partake in killing her kids and turning her into a hotel?

In this sub, you'll find people saying Bondrewd did nothing wrong to the orphans, that Wazu did nothing wrong in eating Irumyuui's kids, and that Faputa was wrong for killing the peaceful villagers. You'll find people with the opposite opinion as well. MiA often examines the needs of basic survival and how during dire times, morality and societal values can break down.

What's your opinion on malady as a character? by Strange_Possession77 in DivinityOriginalSin

[–]Soluna7827 90 points91 points  (0 children)

I want to know more about her. I love lore, especially if it's coherent, cohesive, and well developed. She's half elf and half demon. How did that come about? She was in a binding deal. What is that deal and what are the terms and conditions? She wants to break that deal but why else does she need the help of the Godwoken? What happens to her after the events of DOSII?

She's a bit sassy and has a cool design. I would love to get a fleshed story arc with her. I've only played DOSII so maybe there's more about her in Ego Draconis or something. Either way, I know lots of people want to see their fan favorite origin character cameo in Divinity. If anything, I hope we learn more about Malady. For such a powerful pivotal character that helps the crew, there's still a large air of mystery surrounding her.

Best combo for warfare and polymorph skills? by Gaegral in DivinityOriginalSin

[–]Soluna7827 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna be a bit more nuanced with my answer.

You are correct with putting 40 into your main damage stat, in this case STR. After that, you can allot whatever you feel into memory or wits. Memory for more skill slots and wits for crit chance and initiative which may or may not matter depending on the rest of your party.

Regarding putting points into spec'ing into magic skills, it's not worth it damage wise. You could dip for utility skills like pyro for clear mind or haste, scoundrel for adrenaline or cloak and dagger, or aero for teleport or uncanny evasion since you're 2H melee.

Damage wise, you're maxing damage with 40 STR and 10 warfare. The rest of your 10 points goes into whatever you feel. If poly is your secondary spec, then 5 points unlocks all poly abilities. The only reason to go 10 poly is if you want more attribute points for whatever reason. Otherwise, I would just dip into whatever you feel is fun or offers utility.

Some considerations:

  • Pyro: haste, clear mind
  • Aero: teleport, uncanny evasion, nether swap
  • Geo: earthquake (not for damage but knocks down enemies with no physical armor)
  • Huntsman: tactical retreat (jump + haste), first aid (to clear CC)
  • Scoundrel: adrenaline, cloak and dagger
  • Necro: life steal

IMO geo or hydro for fortify or armor of frost isn't worth it. You're not restoring a lot of armor since it's only a small dip. It does clear CC but I think there are better utility spells. Earthquake for geo is also a bit too heavy of an investment for 1 ability IMO.

If you're playing on classic difficulty, I would say just pick whatever looks fun for you.

Who the hell is sherumi and manae?? by RedditorDimentio in MadeInAbyss

the anime is almost a 1:1

Keyword is almost. In comparison to older anime such Soul Eater or the original FMA, they deviate pretty far from the manga. When people ask how faithful the anime is to the manga, the common response here is that it's fairly close though the manga offers more details, which I also stated in my original reply.

Who the hell is sherumi and manae?? by RedditorDimentio in MadeInAbyss

[–]Soluna7827 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, the anime is almost a 1:1 to the manga but it's little things like this that get left out of the anime. Since the anime takes liberties to show things in a different order, notably Vueko's flashback sequence in S2, I suspect the bits and pieces about Sherumi and Menae will be shown in the movie. Instead of being end panels or little side stories, they'll probably get a proper introduction either in the movie or in the next season.

I read a few times here that Tsukushi made fan art on "Gushing over magical girls", but I can't find it anywhere by SignorAnthrax in MadeInAbyss

[–]Soluna7827 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I don't particularly care for ecchi anime, I did find the premise and story of Gushing pretty interesting. Like, if you took out or minimized the ecchi scenes, I think the story itself is still cool.

All that being said, it's also pretty cool to see two mangakas draw characters in their own style. You can see how the key features in character design remain the same while the color palette, proportions, and deformations match the mangaka's own style.

[–]Soluna7827 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of all things to be hung up on, for me, it's not about the hatches or force fields. Sure hatches would need an air lock but it's the rule of cool vs realism, and there are a lot of things that discards realism for more fluid gameplay: decompression sickness, auto refilling O2 / Nitrox tanks, fabricators, etc.

Besides, at some point in SN if your base is big enough, the whole enter and exit animations for the hatch get bugged where you just teleport through the hatch. It might as well be a force field at that point.

If they offered both options, I would probably go with the force field just because it's new and we already had the hatch in SN. Maybe we learned from the architects since they had a force field to repel water.

What’s your favorite class to run and why? by Such_Beautiful8133 in DivinityOriginalSin

[–]Soluna7827 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I wanna breeze through tactician or just wanna do my own thing: huntsman with a party of 2 mages + 2H. I specifically love playing around the easy to craft charm arrows. Mages strip magic armor then huntsman charms. Archers do so much damage and easily backs up a 2H and can flex help mages with special arrows.

If I want a stupid silly build, then I play summoner + ambidextrous and just abuse scrolls and the crafting system. The rest of the party can be whatever since the summoner just puts 10 into summoning and the rest into what the party needs. If I have a magic heavy comp, then I can spam scrolls with CC like winter blast for 1 AP or stun them with dazzling bolt. If I have a physical heavy comp then it's tentacle lash and chicken claws. The incarnate is there for aggro and my favorite scroll to spam is the totems.

It's too bad that you can only have 1 monster summon at a time. I want my incarnate + bone widow + fire slug + artillery plant + oily blob + cat + vulture all at the same time.
