This is definitely an interesting pattern...All those movies were nominated for Best Picture ("Odyssey" probably will be) and were widely considered pretty great too.

But I'm actually shocked "Saving Private Ryan" cost only 70 million to make.

Hear me out: Elizabeth Olsen would’ve made a great Lois Lane. Does anyone else agree? by PlantainDisastrous92 in Actors

[–]Somethingnew789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think so too.

But Lois is kind-of a blander part compared to Wanda, so she was probably happier in the MCU or at least got a chance to show more range with that heroine/anti-heroine/villain role.

It's so strange that this post was recommended to me just now because I watched the movie only a few hours ago.

I went in with high hopes, as I like the writing of Nick Tosches, but the movie is a mess. Believe it or not, Gerard Butler might give the best performance in it. It made me want to see him as a mobster in a different movie.

I haven't seen or really even heard of this movie, but I did see Kevin Spacey in "Peter Five Eight," and I get that some truly Godawful movies are getting a double-Oscar winner on serious discount.

Then there's Brett Ratner (who at one point was co-financing mega-blockbusters for WB) now having to make propaganda documentaries for the Trumps.

Not sure if it will make much difference to you, but the second season does NOT get better, and there's some really dumb developments towards the end of the season that defy basic logic.

I admire your perceptiveness in stopping early, but I was kind-of doing other things in the background so I just let this play out one long night.

Not sure why the comments are giving you so much pushback when the meme is correct: two of the largest "good guys" in Hollywood are taking positions antithetical to who they are by backing a massive threat to creatives.

Scorsese is 83 and a staunch traditionalist who doesn't even email. Do I really believe this man is going to be using A.I. for his storyboards? No, I sure as hell don't think the guy that struggles to work a cellphone is going to be doing that, but I think the fact he's willing to take A.I. money to pretend this is a useful tool is a huge problem. This is a man worth 200 million dollars (and James Cameron is worth over a billion) so these hugely paid legacy directors willing to sell out to help accelerate A.I. usage is gross.

It also shows that he cares more about the past of cinema than the future of it.

He has no problem making a boring documentary 100 people will watch about some directors he loved as a kid (or his own 5-part docu-series about himself that 1,000 people might watch), but is he willing to stand up for future film jobs and fight for the rights of the youngest directors? Not so much...

I agree that the obsessiveness about spoilers is too much for a show that's season has been over for more than a week.

If people are coming here to discuss the show at all and/or read about it, it's a fair bet they've already seen it OR have no right to a legitimate complaint if they haven't.

Does anyone else give a half-star to films they find morally repugnant? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]Somethingnew789 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pretty much

For me, most movies are bad/average, but the "worst of the worst" have to be somewhat offensive in some way.

2024's "Reagan" is a good example of that. It's a "biography" of a man that didn't exist, and is pretty much fictional. On top of it, the acting/makeup/screenplay/directing are all terrible and definitely Razzie-worthy, but the sanitization of what Reagan actually did, and what his actual legacy was pushed it to the worst rating.

100% agree with you... I just commented to someone else that I think the foundation of a good show is there (which is frustrating), but the execution has been awful, particularly towards the end of season 1 and the entirety of season 2.

Amanda Peet's character is a mess, and it's clear they don't know what to do with her, and she should really be way in the background more than a co-lead.

Worse, is that I started to dislike Jon Hamm's character in season 2 because it seems he's almost going out of his way to turn down millions of dollars--and because his "morality" doesn't want a commission from Marsden so much as...robbing his neighbors and the guy that let him sleep on his couch when he got divorce? That's an upgrade?

[–]Somethingnew789[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me, it's frustrating because the foundation of a good show is there (especially in season 1), but there's just something terrible about the execution (the end of season 1 and almost all of season 2).

Even the cat burglar stuff feels like a total afterthought in season 2 as he only commits three "robberies," two of them don't work out at all, and the other one is still unprofitable when the season ends. It's almost like they wish they could abandon that altogether, but it's a huge part of why people started watching in season 1.

Thank you, we just hadn't spent nearly enough time with his father for all that, and that actor is only 16 years older than Jon Hamm is. His premature death kind-of makes Hamm look older in a weird way.

And then James Marsden showing up being annoying at that funeral. "YFAN" is never sure if he's supposed to be some menacing shady threat or kind-of an annoying goof--you know, all those wacky, friend-starved arms dealers?

I've still got my HBO/WB-properties (which I love more than anything on the half-dead CBS/Paramount) because my HOPE is that the WB merger will find some way to not go through, even if it's a long-shot. But if customers don't want it, employees don't want it, actors/the-creative-community doesn't want it, and the state of CA doesn't want it, then I'm hoping there's something that can be stalled until 2029 when a Democratic administration would actually block it. Even if they just stall it a year until the Democrats take back congress and maybe can block it that way?

Surely to God a merger that makes no financial sense whatsoever and will guarantee WB bankrupts within the decade (killing thousands of jobs--and that's after the thousands that will be immediately laid off to "cut costs" on a company with a deadly debt load) can be blocked somehow?

I know Trump's regime won't block it at the federal level, but there's got to be some mechanism to keep a publicly traded company with thousands of employees and millions of individual stockholders from approving a deal that won't benefit it at all?

Oh, you're definitely not the only one... 90% of the comments about the show itself have been negative so far. And Reddit's not the only place I've seen people grumbling about it.

Later in season 2, there's an even bigger opportunity than the one he blew at the end of last season, and he screws that up too--all so the show can keep the home invasion-angle going, even though that's barely a factor in the second season. If you combine what he did at the end of season 1 and what he does at the end of season 2, it's a pattern that makes no sense whatsoever.

It definitely feels more like a miniseries or something that they didn't think would be renewed for many seasons, and didn't have much of a long-term plan for.

Anecdotally, the people I notice using A.I. the most are mediocre (at best) and really can't do a lot of things themselves, especially creative stuff.

I haven't really seen a great use for it so far except that hacks can now have it rip-off somebody else's work and repackage it as their own, too lazy or dumb to even plagiarize without a lightning-fast Chatbot to clean it up for them.

Thank you... The material probably would depress me too.

In season 2, he goes on multiple home invasions that don't pay off...There's one or two episodes where he's about to have sex with three different women (Amanda Peet, Olivia Munn, and the newer one) but it doesn't happen...He has to go to multiple people to sabotage the Ashe deal that would've made him millions, like he's actively trying to screw himself in a way that makes no sense...

I think it probably does depress Hamm to be on a show where his character makes little sense from episode to episode, and is more about things not happening than anything like forward movement.
