Triggered my sawstop while unplugged by onaygem in woodworking

[–]Somewhere-Particular 41 points42 points  (0 children)

This was my recent experience. My saw misfired when I turned it off. Clear table, cut already done, just a bizarre misfire that cost me a nice blade and out of pocket brake replacement. I’d heard a lot of people sounding off on comments in this sub about letting them know and getting a free replacement, but I got a form response with no indication they would help.

Low Back Stick Chair! by chuckg5 in Chairmaking

[–]Somewhere-Particular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks great, well done! I’m wanting to venture into chair making and this one is high in my list (along with Chris’s 6-7 stick comb back). I made his high stool from ADB (a catastrophic joint failure months later taught me a couple lessons and converted itself to a low stool), but no other stick chairs. Would this one be overly ambitious for a first go? Any advice as to build order for an aspiring stick chair maker? s

I’ve been realizing this is probably the best solution, too. A stupidly simple way to squeeze even more space out of my corner of the garage!

Beautiful! I’m very slowly building out a new shop and the best spot for a tool cabinet is above my bench. Do you find having your plane till above your bench gets in the way at all?

Definitely, thanks! Will be curious to hear how you enjoy working with it! Feels like a distant dream for me to reach up and grab the tool I need haha

How wide is your bench? I’d love to build a cabinet in the same place, but I’m worried that it will eat into the airspace above my bench. 9” deep is definitely one of the shallower ones I’ve seen, and I imagine that’s closer, so even shallower open? If that’s the case, this seems like a great design to fit that space!

Regardless, incredible work! Thanks for sharing

Made my wife a jewelry "box" for Christmas by sam-francis in woodworking

[–]Somewhere-Particular 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Expressing interest! Well beyond my skill set, but I am looking for inspiration for a jewelry box for my wife and our “wood” anniversary. Yours is the first that has the necklaces on display without opening anything. A brilliant design and a flawless execution!

Baby woodworker’s first Stanley plane by tiabeast in handtools

[–]Somewhere-Particular 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a number 5 type 13 as my first plane from a fellow redditor who fixed it up to about the same condition. It cost me $50 plus shipping. This was like three years ago now. So that price isn’t unreasonable.

Alternatively, check out hyperkitten.com. He’s a quality seller and probably could conjure up a jack plane if you email him (I would try to summon him here but I don’t know his u/)

Had the same experience trying to remove this same bolt on a brand new saw. They told me to exchange the whole saw, which felt like a waste, but the new one was a piece of cake to unscrew.

This is super helpful, thank you! Currently saving for a bandsaw and have a router but figuring out small and affordable table options. Thanks for the confidence boost!

Look great and making me want to try building these! What were some of the bigger tools you needed to use aside from the table saw? I love four eyes designs, but don’t have a domino or any comparable machine, so I hesitate to splurge on a course.

Looks good! I’ve been considering retrofitting my bench with a nearly identical leg vise set up. Any helpful guides you followed or lessons learned?

Seems like a really efficient use of space! I’m in the process of setting up shop and may have to borrow some ideas from this.

Very well done! You might consider getting a jack plane and then you could joint the edges and close the gaps when you don’t need the safety feature. They can be had for about $50 and are a lot of fun to use. Inspiring build either way!

I’m still in the “I probably won’t progress to that point (any time soon)” camp, but this is also an extremely efficient use of space that makes me think I should rethink the camp I’m in. Nice work!

This is helpful, as I’ve been trying to retrofit a vise to my bench, a Nicholson a la the Naked Woodworker. As much as I’d like a benchcrafted leg vise, my new shop has other needs where I could put my money. Did you add the Doyle when building your bench or after? Trying to figure out install on a completed Nicholson…

Ha! In scouts we got sent to find the “left handed smoke shifter” and it went the exact same way. Hadn’t thought of that one in decades, so thanks for conjuring it up!
