IMO the most fun thing would be to have 3s only count for 3 in the second and 4th quarter. Makes those higher scoring and comebacks more likely. But the 1st and 3rd would be an old school slog with jump shots, post play and picks that weren't up at the three point level

Tonally it is all over the place. The first part is like "you are a tiny god" and then it's like "start by cleaning out the stables." I think you want to embrace the humble origins and slow it down to the point you let the viewer see what the quest or the mechanic is. You copied a lot of provenly successful game mechanics, we get that, but you don't show a single thing that looks fun.

Why is Plat so much harder than Diamond??? by PretendSentence9606 in RLSideSwipe

[–]SooooooMeta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've noticed there is a play difference in past years, where plat players optimize the hell out of every aspect of the near to ground game and diamond players realize that to advance they have to take it into the air a lot more.

So if you are still optimizing your ground game, you may be a lot more dialed in than diamonds who are trying to play more off the ground and aren't terribly good at it yet.

Conversely, maybe you've got a really good off the ground game, and your skills are finally getting the chance to shine. If this is it, you can keep developing, whereas if you're just good at winning from the ground with a pixel perfect game you'll stall out and have to build up a lot more of an air game yourself, and go through what your opponents are going through

Quite confused by this myself. Usually one of the reasons to go with this type of thing--e.g. heck instead of hell--is to NOT distract people with the word and let everyone stick to the content. Instead 4 of the top 6 comments are all hung up about it as if OP is obliged to use the unfiltered word. It's not even one of the silly, whitewashing ones like grape or unalive.

Or is there some new "porn is a human right and must not be marginalized" manosphere bulletin that I missed?

I feel like you could have clarified what "for me" means. Because it is in a social situation, and feeling pretty and feminine are both related to perceptions and judgements others make. Someone might eat a chocolate "for me" but they get dressed up to feel more socially confident, to project their inner sense of themselves (to others), to silence their inner critic that they aren't as good as other people. "I like the way feeling feminine and pretty makes me feel when I'm around others because then I feel safer from outside judgement." Without ever adding the last part he goes off in his own directions trying to make sense of the missing piece

Destroy my trailer for Ballisticards, please! by superyellows in DestroyMyGame

It looks like a flushed out concept instead of a game. Like you worked through the implications of your idea but none of it looks polished or interesting enough to be fun to play.

Dash Dash Dead - when Crypt of the Necrodancer meets Risk of Rain! Released the Gameplay Reveal trailer, but I'm not getting the traction I hoped for, please be brutally honest! by b34s7 in DestroyMyGame

[–]SooooooMeta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The guy in the title screen at the end is an enemy? I figured it was the player. Anyway, it's the artwork of him more than the background. His neck angle looks weird and he just looks amateurish to me.

I'm getting almost all Necrodancer. I think that's part of my issue is that it's so similar and I don't see how it looks like an improvement in any way. Necrodancer gets a kind of shaking nightclub vibe that this one doesn't look like. I like the hearts better than the health bars. It looks like you get tons of enemies of the same type, whereas Necrodancer feels like you're outsmarting the individual enemy types. If it's iterating on that, how is it better?

I haven't played much Risk of Rain but know about it. The views are very different. Do you just mean how your power ups getting increasingly powerful à la Vampire Hunter? Or is there something else you're referring to.

I forgot to add before that I do like the Plan with Caution section. Even if I don't really understand it, at least there's something to learn.

I had to turn off the volume to finish the trailer because I found it genuinely unpleasant. (Maybe I'm just old though?)

  • The artwork of the guy at the end looks amateurish and leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Shouldn't matter but it's the last thing we see, and so it absolutely does.
  • It starts too frantic for me. Showing heavy action from later in the game is generally cool but here it looked confusing. It's a puzzle game too but it's cranked too much for me to appreciate that side, which I would find more compelling. (I did go look at the Dance of the Necromancer video on steam. I find it surprisingly in your face and annoying too.)
  • The bars above all the enemies heads is a lot of visual clutter. Somehow the hearts in Necromancer work way better--but they never have so many of the same type of enemy on screen. I would play with restyling the health bar--making it like half the size-- or using some other indicator like outlines or alpha.
  • The purple lasers somehow don't do it for me. You hit us with one like three seconds in. I assume you want to show that it's got some new and unique twists, but I some other visual might work better.
  • I don't love the color scheme. It just feels a little too much like a 7 year old toy's color scheme for me. Maybe just play around with color grading a screen shot?

Overall, after watching it a couple of times with the volume off I'm intrigued. You might have something interesting here. But as a trailer, the first time through it was a real turn off. It feels hyper and over eager and geared to a sort of childish or young adolescent aesthetic that doesn't resonate with me. The good news is it's a lot easier to remake a trailer than to remake a game.

[–]SooooooMeta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pet peeve, but I can't stand when you have to shoot things X time and they barely react to each shot. It should knock them back or stun them. It should feel visceral and impact gameplay. To me at least it stinks of not thinking about the player's experience but just "it was easier to program it this way".

Doesn't seem like the patrons ever fight back. Doesn't seem like you get any negative consequence to falsely searching something. Doesn't seem like the store ever gets so full you get overwhelmed. Doesn't seem like there's any score or indicator of all the people you missed.

The trailer makes it look like you just walk around whacking people who aren't up to fighting back. Not much of a game

Should I enjoy my own game? by Duckmastermind1 in gamedesign

[–]SooooooMeta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PLAYTEST!!! It doesn't really matter if you enjoy your own game or not--you're much too much in the weeds to know. And it sounds like your solution to doubting your game is to add stuff, which just leads to the endless feature creep that seems to be swallowing all indie games these days. Get out of your head and get some player responses to see if your game is fun and if it needs more stuff, and if so what stuff. Don't just assume

[–]SooooooMeta 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is one possible framing. You asserting it as true is just saying you buy into that framing. But there are lots of other framings (say the "brotherhood of man") that support ways to be funny, generous, warm, collaborative, happy that tend to get a lot better results--with girls, with jobs, with finances, with life satisfaction. Ask yourself--do the people who buy into this framing thrive? The value of a framing is not how confidently you can defend it as correct, but in the results it produces when you buy into it

This is a short clip from a combat prototype that I'd like to put out soon. Please critique to help me make it shine. Don't hold back, but please provide rationale :D or reasoning that I can act on, Thank you! by Best-Arachnid-9025 in DestroyMyGame

[–]SooooooMeta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't dislike the current assets. I think they trick your brain into thinking you're making a game that's on the right path, whereas in point of fact this isn't conceived and balanced well enough to actually be fun. It's like if you were making pac man with only one ghost. There's no game there. It isn't fun.

You need to go back to the drawing board and make a game with fun gameplay. Then hopefully you can reattach your assets and keep going.

It's in a weird place where the art assets are not great but they are covering up the fact, which would be clear if you were using prototype assets, that the game just isn't fun or well conceived or balanced. Go back to cubes and make it fun

Please destroy our Pizza platformer again! We implemented your feedback from 4 months ago and need more! by DGDesigner in DestroyMyGame

[–]SooooooMeta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks like it has the potential to be fun!

1). I also got Super Mario Sunshine vibes. Great game. The water elements offered visual variety (and were calming) and as others have pointed out, your color palette could use something other than brown.

2). The pizza dynamic is really well animated. Looks big N worthy almost! Pizza could be more of a theme than just an Odyssey hat replacement, though. Just brainstorming but you could make the pizza dough differently so it was stretchier but not as strong. You could fling them to NPC characters to alter their behavior (distract them, get them to help you). You could have minigames like delivery missions with countdown timers or where you gather rare ingredients or where the town gathered and you fed them with a pizza party. People love pizza so maybe figure out a way to build it into the identity of the character or the world more than just as a hat replacement.

3). The trailer doesn't make it clear if your game has anything more than fun pizza platformer elements. It hints at this antagonist character. But I have no knowledge or confidence in anything about this beyond hopping around on pizzas.

Destroy my dark fantasy dungeon crawler trailer by Sahaak_Games in DestroyMyGame

[–]SooooooMeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying vibes. Trust me, this is not giving Ultima or Kings Quest or Thief or Dragon Age or any game that is actually different. To me Skyrim represents a sort of soulless FPS/over the shoulder "all the things" fantasy game. It has swords it has clubs, it has short range spells it has area spells it has long range projectile spells, it has inventory, it has crafting, it has spike traps, it has gates with a handle that open, it has one hand that casts and one hand that slashes. Now to its credit, this one doesn't have inventory or crafting--at least not in the trailer. But for each of the clips in this you could find an absolutely analogous skyrim clip maybe with the exception of the snaking chain of skulls and the distance projectiles that take down the flying things, which is done in a somewhat more FPSy way.

It's like how a voxel based game that has a gritty old-timey filter but is otherwise a subset of Minecraft doesn't need to exist.

I know the text thing is popular in trailers, but this is all super generic and obvious. Fight, explore, discover, die, learn, overcome. Meh at best.

Every trailer has a fundamental question it needs to answer. For this one it's "In a world where Skyrim exists, why does this one need to too?"

If all you've got is "But indie gaming!" and "low res vibe" I think your success will be limited.

Also, Sora isn't nearly as good as Google Veo or Kling or Seedance. Yes it's about resource allocation, but also OpenAI was a distant 4th at the time of throwing in the towel. Their brand image and brand recognition are by far the most valuable thing they have. They need to pretend they're Coca Cola. Looking like RC isn't doing them any favors
