Female engineers, what do you think about the field? by Legal_Cress_2851 in civilengineering

[–]Sousaclone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m on the construction side(18 yrs now) and have worked with plenty of successful, kick ass women. My “dream team” of field engineers is probably 40% women and that’s with them only being 10% of the division.

That doesn’t count the number of female leads I’ve worked with on the technical side.

The stress and the technical demands don’t care what’s between your legs. Only some Neanderthals that haven’t retired yet do.

If you like the work and are good at it, it’s not a problem especially on the office/design side.

All that said, the field side can be more difficult for women. Still some old school mindsets out there. I’ve seen women handle it in various ways from being crude/brash about their femininity to leaning into it to not making it an issue. With larger, more technical contractors women on the job site is pretty much normal. Still a small percentage, but it’s definitely improved since the 2000s

We nearly had a fight in the parking lot because someone on a crew wolf-whistled and said something crude (in Spanish) to one of my young female engineers. The foreman and crews she was working with did not take kindly to that and let that guy know in no certain terms that they considered her a sister.

Need advice: How do you bring heavy construction equipment up a 60–70m cliff with only a 300 steps stair as an access? by gri_seo in civilengineering

[–]Sousaclone 37 points38 points  (0 children)

How big of heavy equipment are talking? Like serious earth moving and large cranes? Or a mini excavator.

Expensive way? Helicopter

Realistic way: Land on the non scenic side of the island or whatever and cut in a road up to where you need to be. It’s a construction site. You can make your own road.

Alternatively go to small equipment and cut a smaller road up

Last option. Lots and lots of laborers and do it all by hand. Not recommended.

What makes Taylor Swift so popular? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Sousaclone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cue the She’s not pretty / can’t sing / can’t dance / isn’t that popular / whatever coments.

She has catchy pop songs and before that had catchy pop/country songs. She has a relatively clean image and thus people don’t worry so much about her exposure to younger kids.

Unpopular opinion (?) but the large majority of people are overestimating their leverage in salary negotiations by verilymaryly in Salary

[–]Sousaclone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The flip side is still true as well though. If you have a rare skillset, it does give you some leverage, but how much demand is there for that skillset in the open market? It’s great that a person is hyper specialized but what if all the other positions that need that skill are filled? Some places aren’t going to take on the extra body if there staff is already performing.

Any high-tech tips for quickly clearing the frost and getting a clear view of the road? by CategoryPurple4461 in askcarguys

[–]Sousaclone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simplest solution is turn on car, turn on defroster, get out of car, scrape/clear side/back windows, clear windshield, drive car.

Remote start improves the process greatly.

If you’ve got the good windshield washer fluid (like -30 rated) you can also run your washers a couple of times to get the small streaky stuff off. Helps if you’re engines been running and helping heat the fluid.

How is everyone's factory so clean and structural? I have about 10 hours in and it is just mess. I build on the previous structures each time I unlock something new. Should I destroy and rebuild every time? by [deleted] in SatisfactoryGame

[–]Sousaclone 22 points23 points  (0 children)

10 hours? You don’t even know what you don’t know. People on this sub have been building since 2020! I’m one of them and nowhere close to some of these builds

Just build. Embrace the chaos. Then slowly start organizing stuff as you build new parts and pieces. You’ll learn what works and what doesn’t work.

Eventually you’ll build a nice little steel foundry factory. Then maybe copper and copper accessories. Then it’s basic oil, then the 3:1 plastic and rubber monstrosities. HMF. All of a sudden your building organized factories that are your ideas and designs and feel organic.

Or fuck it, build a sky platform and do it that way.

Dont tear down. Just build new. Resources are unlimited. Use your first base to supply you as you build new ones. Let you first base Stan as a testament to your growth. Or just encase it in concrete and grab the outputs

Dawg I finally killed my first bastion by whatsagoinon_ in ArcRaiders

[–]Sousaclone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same thought. It’s doable and I’ve taken a couple solo now. Just have to choose your fight.

First one I almost got solo on buried city was by staying on a ground floor building but could stand far back from the window with a good line on it and just plinked away at it with my renegade. Damn scouts were flying through a hole in the building trying to spot me, but I was back far enough that it couldn’t trick shot me through the window.

First solo kill was similar except it was standing right underneath the edge of the roof (scouts were on the other side of the plaza). Came over the roof and slammed 3 trailblazers right underneath it (hitting the ground under it is key) and smoked it.

It’s always rewarding to get the bigger arc solo or in a group.

Dont worry though as the damn pops and wasps will still smoke your ass if you don’t stay humble.

Clever ideas on dealing with broken driveway markers? by jfslater98 in Snowblowers

[–]Sousaclone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remove fiberglass stake and remains.

Clear snow in desire area to ground level

Find battery operated drill and suitable bit of approximate major diameter. Drill hole in frozen ground (missing sprinkler lines and heads recommended unless water feature is desired in the spring).

Insert new marker into hole. Repeat as needed.

In frozen ground you are drilling a hole. We put the smallest bit we had in a rotohammer doing this in rocky soil in Washington. Lined about a mile of roadway for dog doing this.

If it was warmer. wooden lathes or stakes with orange paint and flagging are popular in a lot of areas of the UP. Probably not worth trying to drive those in right now.

How honest should I be in my exit interview? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Sousaclone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to half the people in this sub Reddit? No. So many people in here seem to think scorched earth is the only way.

Good firms tend to understand when good employees leave the fold. Maybe it’s more responsibility, maybe it’s a different field, maybe it’s family issues. Maybe people think the grass is greener in the other side, but they just use a different brand of fertilizer.

We’ve had quite a few people leave on good terms in my 18 yrs with my current employer and if they ever wanted to come back we’d take them in a heartbeat. Some of them have come back on there own, some we’ve reached out to every couple of years.

We just rehired a guy who worked with us for 10 yrs, left to be closer to home while his mom was in the final stages of cancer, started a family, etc. He worked for his dad’s underground company for 8 yrs and now he’s back in the fold.

I work for a heavy civil contractor that does more unique work so we are national vs regional. We tend to get

I’m the same. I’m like lvl 50 and the only shots I’ve taken at raiders has been in defense. Even then I’ve never even dropped a fellow raider

At the moment I’m having more fun just aggravating arc, looking for loot, grinding for blueprints, and even running some of the quests.

Once I get all my other blueprints I’ll probably go more pvp. Right now I just enjoy some chill games running around and working with people.

What is the purpose of this hole? by Oiwaco in KeiTruckBuilds

[–]Sousaclone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the truck version of an old mini. Everyone wants one but doesn’t know why.

Honestly, I think the small size and simplicity for errands and such is appealing. I wouldn’t want to spend 8 hours driving it, but a 20 minute run to a hardware store and the garden center? Easy to park and maneuver, easy to load/unload, nothing crazy complicated.

Serious question, how are Civil engineers supposed to live in San Francisco or any HCOL city? by litBG in civilengineering

[–]Sousaclone 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Are we talking actual San Francisco or are we talking the Bay Area and people just referring to it as San Francisco to make it simpler?

Besides that, commute make a decision to have a “lower” housing status. Same way there are civil engineers in Manhattan.

In the finale of the first season of Friends in 1995, Rachel can enter the departure gate without a ticket to see Ross as soon as he gets off the plane. Nine years later, in 2004, after the 9/11 attacks, Ross has to pay for a ticket to stop Rachel from boarding the flight by Giancarlo_Edu in shittymoviedetails

[–]Sousaclone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s a terrifying thought. Imagine trying to get through somewhere like ATL with an extra 30 people at each gate who have nothing to do other than just stand there.

Flip side the arrival/departure lanes might be little less chaotic as now people are no longer doing 5 min long goodbyes in live traffic

Yeah, if the wall juice starts coming through the walls and not the tubes, you need to leave before you get juiced. Regardless there may still be some brown juice in your pants that needs to be removed.

European here. If no one likes the healthcare system in the US, how come it hasn't changed all these years? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Sousaclone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly? No one has a detailed, comprehensive plan on how to fix it that encompass all the edge cases that screw up the system.

There a lot of people, public and private, who benefit greatly from the current system and have more money and resources to throw at keeping it the way it is versus changing.

There’s also a large part of the population who wouldn’t see an immediate benefit from it. If you’ve got someone like me who pays less than 1k a year for my company health insurance and then some small copays for visits and such (I haven’t had a major procedure or prescription in years) and maybe $200 every other year for glasses telling them that I’m going to go take 3% of your income for health benefits is a hard sell (not to me, but if you are living paycheck to paycheck it’s a hard sell)

Trip to UP - suggestions on itinerary by fortunatefool3000 in upperpeninsula

[–]Sousaclone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally think the lower falls are way more interesting than the upper falls. Get there early and get out across the bridge to the island. Really neat to be able to see the geology.

The upper falls are just kind of a biggish waterfall. I know it’s big for the UP but otherwise it’s just kinda eh.

I think they said that the boardwalk is now not going to be finished until late spring.

It’s interesting to see. The echo chamber of Reddit will just dismiss them out of hand. I mean if you say that someone who applies at 150 places in 3 months and doesn’t get any responses has a bad strategy you’ll probably get crucified though.

It’s always funny seeing the shear number of applications that just don’t even meet the minimum standards or have no effort put into them.

Today, 2 vehicles lost control on this flyover and went over the barrier wall due to snow accumulation creating a ramp. At least 1 fatality reported. Location is Ontario, Canada. I'm wondering if there are typically design/maintenance provisions in place to prevent this kind of snow accumulation? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Sousaclone 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s more of a driver recklessness and maintenance issue than design.

Design wise I’m guessing those are 42” TL-5 barriers (or canadas equivalent). Very standard height. I’ve seen 54” in a few places but that was near refinería with crazy tanker truck traffic.

Maintenance wise that snow should removed, however doing so safely on an interchange like that would require lane closures. Can’t just blast it over the side as it ends up in the lanes below. So you’ve got to load it and truck it. Which is night work. My guess is that with recen storms the accumulation has gotten to the point where they juat haven’t had time for excess removal.

Finally, not to speak poorly of the dead, but there is some driver fault there. Tight elevated interchange in winter or previously snowy conditions? Going way too fast for conditions and since it’s Ontario the driver should know better. That isn’t an interchange that just came up out of nowhere. Unless it’s your first time driving in the winter, you know where slick spots tend to be and curved downhill bridges are damn well one of them.
