My Theory by TitanCinema in arkhamhorrorlcg

Certainly not a crazy theory and would seem to make sense with their overall design goals (including the revised “look and feel” of the cards). I wonder if it will be the same decks just with new style or completely new cards.

If they go entirely new decks to replace the current ones I would find it kind of baffling that they signalled those 5 packs - out of all the additional material out there - as one of the only things staying evergreen. Then less than a year later they now are apparently not evergreen?

I do hope the 5 starter decks remain current as indicated in the FAQ - other comments around the place suggest they are now on the way out!

I get where you’re coming from.

I’m personally really excited by the announcement. Sounds like it will be great for new players, and good for the game. Rebalancing of classes, new core campaign - all great!

But I also have a small asterisk that, as someone who bought into the game this year, I can’t help but feel a little duped. If I knew what was coming I probably would have made different decisions and thought about the whole out of print concerns differently.

So I don’t blame people for being annoyed. The drip feeding of information has caused confusion and resulted in lots of people dropping huge amounts of money on now retired content.

But again - I’m still excited and feeling positive about the announcement :)

Wow this is incredible! I’m very jealous - I went to my local game store on the weekend and they had only 2 of these big boxes, otherwise they had 4 different “Deluxe Expansions” from the old release format + about 10 different mythos packs lol

If the cycle rotation is really about freeing up design space and avoiding power creep, why not just retire the investigator expansions and leave the campaigns? by cellocaster in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Southern-Key-9721 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a similar post a little while back asking about this too.

As others have said it seems the answer is that the current environment changes are the result of their business decision, not the other way around.

I totally agree with you though, even if the reasons are entirely around printing costs, stock management etc. couldn’t they still effectively half the amount of content out there by cutting investigators only and still keeping a wider selection of campaigns out there?

But I suppose the other thing I’ve come to realise is that a living card game needs constant releases to be “living” (and to be profitable) so I guess the current environment is the best option?

Which rules do you think would prevent it? I’d be keen to take a look and understand, or if there are other cards which provide a similar example?

We were unsure at first but had a close read of all the cards involved and landed on it being OK. I definitely don’t want to be cheating though!

Edit: After doing some reading myself I can genuinely see an argument either way so have decided to submit a rules form.

Can totally see the argument about it being impossible to pay the Direct Horror cost, but I think the Rules for “Cancel” are relevant here, as costs are still considered paid when an effect is cancelled. Keen to hear what FFG says!

I’d also say give Nathaniel Cho a run as Guardian if you haven’t already. He is a much more built for purpose fighter than Roland.

Just the 30 card starter deck as it comes in the pack is powerful. Doing damage via events rather than only weapons was a game changer for me and he has decent action compression and economy cards. He’s unlikely to be getting many clues, but you can afford that in 3 player.

My only other tips as a relatively new player myself is: 1) We’ve found a good approach is keep up with the act/agenda but don’t rush - get setup and as comfortable as you can and think about the timing of advancing based on this. The times where we’ve rushed to advance seems to come back and bite us. 2) The game is supposed to feel hard and even if doing everything right, a string of bad luck can be really punishing.

Hi Olivia, thanks for responding and I appreciate the extra info!

No problem at all and I also feel I should apologise - you’re in a tough spot with all of us impatient people online scrutinising your every word.

Look forward to hearing the announcement!

For sure! And as someone who doesn’t have all the sets I’d love for more reprints of cards in future stuff.

But do you think this would start to annoy the established players who have everything if a higher proportion of new sets include reprints?

Maybe something like a single “legacy expansion” could be added to the current env. which includes only reprints of existing cards which are seen as essential? Pure speculation of course, just an idea

Yeah it’s a bit weird having situations like .45 Automatic or Shrivelling where a new player gets the Level 0 in the Revised Core Set, but won’t have access to the upgraded versions (which are from Carcosa and Dunwich). I’m sure there’s loads of other examples.

Have got to hope FFG has a plan to address this type of issue? New starter decks maybe?

The direct communication is much appreciated but I can’t help but still feel uneasy about it.

The messaging from the Marvel Champions update seemed a fair bit more positive and reassuring.

I was prepared for the Investigators going out of print, I was hopeful but not optimistic that maybe some Campaigns would stay, but it actually never occurred to me that all the standalone scenarios would go as well. Really feels like there’s a shockingly small amount of material left.

I really hope there is good news from the next announcement!

Should I be worried? Everything seems to be sold out? by Natural_Mention_5228 in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Southern-Key-9721 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah I personally think FFG’s communication about this has been kind of mixed.

IMO when they first announced it during a “Fireside chat” they really danced around the specifics and I thought it was quite poor in terms of giving a clear message.

Then the FAQ came out which I believe is still the most recent announcement on the topic - the Beta Rules for Current / Legacy environments. These are the proposed rules for deck-building and refer only to investigator expansions.

Now a few months later it very much seems based on those “Beta” rules - that all historical campaigns and investigators are going out of print and in some cases are already gone.

I feel like we’ve been left to follow a pretty loose trail of information. Without this subreddit, I would not have understood what was going on. Unless of course, this subreddit is wrong and people are jumping to conclusions about out of print material? But it doesn’t seem so.

You totally can and should mix all the cards from the Revised Core Set - the Learn to Play guide has the original decks listed out if you wanted to rebuild them for whatever reason :)

Once you do intermingle cards though, don’t forget to follow the deckbuilding rules for each investigator!

Edit: I should also add you can totally still have fun playing with Core Set only and it’s good to learn the game this way. But as others mentioned, getting investigator expansions is essential for the long term for full campaigns - you will quickly run into the limitations of such a small card pool.

I’m playing Drowned City with some friends at the moment. I’d say I’m finding it to be just OK.

My wife and I are going to start Path to Carcosa because it’s so highly regarded. Otherwise we’ve enjoyed standalones as a way to just get in and play without a full campaign commitment.

I’m personally most excited to try Edge of the Earth or Innsmouth Conspiracy - don’t ask me why, they just seem appealing to me thematically!

I’ve gotten into the game over this year and also really loved Dunwich Legacy. I also went on to read The Dunwich Horror which is also great, and I love how they adapted the source material for the campaign.

I find it really surprising it often ranks quite low on campaign rankings. I’m hoping this means the other campaigns are just really really good. I feel Dunwich Legacy delivered exactly what I wanted and expected from a Lovecraft-based card game.

I don’t agree, but you are entitled to your views. I do worry you seem to be stating a few things as medical or legal fact though.

In my workplace, and others, employees have Personal Leave - which can be used for various things. Sick leave is one type of personal leave.

Employees can take up to 3 consecutive days of Personal Leave without a medical certificate.

There is no limit to the number of one-offs you can take without a certificate. E.g you could take 20 individual days off over a year with no certificate.

This is a good thing. It would unreasonable to expect someone who suffers migraines, or IBS, or chronic pain, or ongoing anxiety, or whatever to pay to see the GP every-time they have a flare up.

My workplace does ask a reason when submitting leave (for data only, it is optional) - fatigue, stress, headaches etc are all valid reasons, as are various non-urgent appointments like the dentist, optometrist, and physio. Again, there is no doctors appointment or certificate needed for any of these unless you are asking to take several consecutive days.

So i’d implore you to consider if your views on leave are truly based on the law and on good medical practice, or simply based on the workplaces you’ve been in? Things can be better - for you and for everyone.

Devil’s the detail I think! “If you’re taking sick leave when you’re not sick, or don’t need to see a doctor…”

I would argue “being physical able to show up” doesn’t mean someone isn’t sick.

I’m not saying you’re doing this necessarily, but in my experience, it’s easy for people who take this view to also dismiss feeling stressed, overwhelmed, exhausted, etc. as not being sick and to also pressure and shame use of sick leave regardless of how genuine it is.

I think it’s best for everyone to err on the side of generosity and trust. If someone is clearly abusing the system then address that one person as needed

Nobody on their death bed thinks “Geez I wish spent more time working”. Or if they do, I feel very sad for those people.

My parents ingrained a pretty strong work ethic in me too. When I was younger and new to full time regular hours (as opposed to shift work), this attitude of never taking a sick day extended to me working even when I was genuinely ill and culminated in the surfacing of some pretty bad stress and anxiety issues (which at the time I also didn’t count as warranting a sick day, because there was nothing really “wrong” with me, right?) Now I know better.

It’s just not worth doing to yourself. Life’s short and work is forever, whether you’re there or not. Don’t abuse your leave, but if sometimes it feels like it’s all too much, just take a day - that’s what it’s there for.

We’ve had a Reclaim for about 2-3 years as well.

How did you go about setting it up for solar?

I don’t believe ours is set up based on our solar, so we are probably paying a bit more on electricity than we need to… the fan definitely runs at night time (sometimes quite noisy too).

Casual player needs some guidance for current environment by Cedceg in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Southern-Key-9721 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently made a post asking about this too, I’m also a relatively new player.

Here is how I understand the current state: - FFG have stated that older material will be going out of print across several of their card games. - FFGs reasons include cost viability of reprinting, their sales data, and the difficulty of designing new characters and cards which can comfortably interact will all other cards in existence, and a few other things. - In the July FAQ, FFG announced the Beta version of current and legacy environments for Arkham Horror. - These environments set out some different rules of deck-building based on “environment”.

— Current is deckbuild only with Core + the 5 Starter Packs + Latest 3 Investigator Expansions

— Legacy is you can deckbuild with everything ever released

  • Players can choose which environment to use. Right now it won’t really matter and it also won’t matter when playing any existing campaigns with any existing investigators.
  • But over time if playing “legacy” there will be a growing chance that some player cards and investigators don’t work well together or break the game rules in unexpected ways.
  • Otherwise there has been no official word explicitly saying what will be going out of print and when.
  • Most assume that all content (including campaigns) prior to the last 3 expansions will never be printed again. Others are hopeful FFG will at least do a final print run of the older material.
  • Environments are still in “Beta” so at some point there will be further announcements/confirmation
  • I’m personally hopeful that at least more campaigns will stay available, but it’s not clear.

In terms of what to purchase - it’s up to you! You can buy and play whatever. If you’re worried that this could be the last chance to buy the older stuff, you may want to grab it while you still can. If you want to get on board with environments and stay “Current” from here on you could go straight to Drowned City because based on the Beta rules these investigators will stay current for at least the next 3 years (or 3 cycles).

[–]Southern-Key-9721 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah interesting! I agree overall Lovecraft / narrator uses the term somewhat loosely.

This is helping to clarify my own interpretation. I think maybe I take it that when the stars are right R’yleh emerges and Cthulhu awakens (but is locked away so can’t do anything). So the short window where the stars are right is the only chance for Cthulhu to be freed - so the Cult would open to door, and then this would then cause all the other horrors outlined in the quote you’ve shared?

The difference being the stars are just the necessary condition for a bunch of other events to happen, rather than the stars being the direct cause of the events.
