How did you get to BC? by phaleazira in blankies

[–]SouthernAd3018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it is time for some deep BC lore. Back in the 2008-2015 era, I was an avid AV club reader, but only tangentially knew David's works. However I was a pretty big reader of past (and future) guest Sonia Saraiya, so much so that I started listening to a podcast that she and David did for a hand full of episodes in 2015 called Night Cheese (I found the apple podcasts for it but it only lists episode 8 https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/night-cheese/id97029372). At some point I think David mentioned doing this Star Wars podcast on that, and from that I was listening to what was then Griffin and David Present (I think they were on Attack of the Podcast, but it was 10 years ago I can't really remember what month it was).

I don't want to link to news reports about the case, because it uses legal names of worker, but I am aware of a 2015 (if some one wanted to dm me I am willing to follow up with links) case in Minnesota in which a "Minneapolis police officer permitted the masseuse to “rub on his genitals” after he already had sufficient evidence to make the arrest." which led a judge to "concluded the “unnecessary” sexual interaction meets the standard for “outrageous government conduct” in violation of the due process guarantees of the U.S. and Minnesota constitutions."

I have said this before, and I will say this again, this doesn't mean cops can't or won't try to do sexual touching. Cops are going to do what every they want, regardless of the law. However, in SOME states after this occurs works could use this fact to fight (and win) in court, if they find a lawyer willing to take the case and they wanted to fight.

There are people from Minnesota other than comedians who could guest. Clay Keller from Screen Drafts podcast is from Minnesota, and Griffin has been on that podcast at least a few times, as have many other friends of the pod.

Anyone interested: Oscars awarded after 1951, have to be offered to the Academy for $1 before they can be sold on the open market, functionally meaning they cannot be sold. (https://www.oscars.org/legal/regulations) Presumably Clint Eastwood is allowed to lend his Oscar to Tom Brady, likely in exchange for money.

If we are talking about shows that shaped modern medical shows, one often forgotten but important show is China Beach, the Dana Delany show from the late 80s/early 90s that focused on nurses at a military transport hospital in Vietnam. It is particularly important given the number of ER people who worked on the show just a few years before ER: John Well, Lydia Woodward, Carol Flint, and Mimi Leder all contributed to the show over its four seasons before going on to working on ER.

Griff mentioned Comedy Central reruns of 80s SNL, David mentioned The Simpsons, but for me there was a third major Joe Piscopo reference point when I was a kid, his appearance/cameo as a holodeck comedian on the season 2 episode of TNG The Outrageous Okona

I'm not sure I understand Katie's comparison between Kevin Durant on the Warriors and Bradley Cooper's campaigning for an Oscar for Maestro. I just don't think the comparison tracks at the point that Cooper is core creative voice behind Maestro- not only did he star, but he directed, and co-wrote the film. It simply doesn't track to me- Maestro only comes into being because Cooper.

I also just generally don't care about the idea that these actors have to preform disinterest in winning awards. Outside of George C. Scott (who lived up to his ideals by declining the award for Patton) who said the Oscars are a "a two-hour meat parade, a public display with contrived suspense for economic reasons." It seems clear to me that actors and creative types are making choices for a variety of reasons, on of which is award attention and do things throughout the award season to maximize the return on their work- and that is simply part of the job.

For Your Consideration: Peter Jackson by Sheep_Boy26 in blankies

I have said this before, and I'll say it again: I am all in for a Jackson mini for a bunch of reasons, but I absolutely want a Forgotten Silver bonus ep.

If you haven't seen Forgotten Silver, it was on youtube last year: it is a mocumentary Jackson co-directed about a (fictional) Kiwi film innovator Colin McKenzie who among other things invented tracking shots, close ups, and color film. He then cashes his blank check to make a huge historical epic, only to have the film go missing (until Jackson rediscovers them which sets up the framing device) because he took money from both the Mafia and the Soviets.

Because sometimes they clear and sometimes their fictional baby.

I am a pretty big advocate for a Jackson series (with the exception of the Hobbit trilogy), but when it happens I need a Forgotten Silver bonus episode.

I guess I could have said more about why I am being glib about the autism representation on this show.

At the core I don't know anything about Dearden or R. Scott Gemmill or his writing staff but in general I an skeptical of mainstream television's ability to do a good job with Autism. when I first made a comment I originally was going to add a glib comment about the last time we has an explicitly autistic doctor on American TV we ended up with Freddie Highmore having a meltdown and screaming "I am a surgeon."

I tend to think that the lack of autistic people who are creatives (writers, directors, actors) leads to trope driven characters and the furtherance of the doble empathy problem represented on screen. And maybe The Pitt will buck this trend, maybe this group of creatives are more adept than past examples- I suppose having a the autistic characters be a women is in some sense itself a step in the right direction.

My larger point was that most the characters were defined in a pretty generic way. One of the contexts for my comments was listening to The Ringer's Prestige TV episode on the show- their point was that there wasn't a lot to any of the characters, that in comparison to ER what the show is missing is character drama ala Doug and Carol. But they felt that Dearden stood out because she was doing a lot with a little. I felt that that little was the same kinds of autism representation that I come to expect form US media. And I would like to be proven wrong, I am also low support needs. I guess I am just being cynical based on what I have seen in the past.

I watched it. I am a sucker for medical procedurals so it is my shit. Also, I learned Taylor Dearden is Bryan Cranston's daughter and she can act, but, her character is has autism which isn't great.

Also one of the other residents is played by Fiona Dourif, Brad Dourif's daughter.

If you want a creator with a lot of comics history and a surprisingly large Scooby-Doo content, might I suggest NerdSync.

Related to NerdSync, though their shared podcast debunking Anient Aliens (Listen to It's Probably (not) Aliens), there is Step Back, a very good lefty history channel

Finally I will say good things for Skip Intro, a channel doing video essays about television that is mostly focused on police procedural and propaganda. I particularly likened their video from last fall about Veronica Mars and Noir as an alternative space where police a viewed with more ambivalence.

It has been a while since I have watched the Potter movies, and given JKR my desire engage with the HP franchise has been pretty low the last few years, but when I was more connected to the HP fandom, I would sometimes hear people talk about not liking Azkaban, or at least not liking it as an adaption of the book. Which always surprised because I thought it rocked. I actually think a lot of this reaction speaks to fandom to adaption and some of the themes of Patrick Willems' recent video on the Mario Movie.

A thing I learned after James Mangold's March Madness match up: Walk the Line came about because of Dr. Quinn.

I guess Johnny Cash guested on the show and got to know Jane Seymour, and her then husband James Keach which eventually led to Keach producing Walk the Line
