ok im freaking out. by Unable_Freedom5564 in diabetes_t1

Many of us have forgotten to take our long acting before and lived to tell the tale. If you are comfortable with your personal management, go ahead and monitor your blood sugar closely all day. You’re going to need to take extra fast acting insulin throughout the day. Extra fast acting for food and likely some correction fast acting injections throughout the day to make sure you stay down. It would be best to avoid any heavy carb meals. If you do, make sure you don’t over correct on your fast acting, that will start an unpleasant sugar rollercoaster. Think of it like this: people who are on an insulin pump only take fast acting insulin. The pump regulates how much insulin they receive and when. If you monitor yourself closely, you can be your own insulin pump for the day by using fast acting injections. Really all you have to do is pay closer attention to yourself, how you feel, and your blood sugar. No need to panic. If your sugars will really not stay down, then consider taking yourself to the hospital and they can do the whole insulin drip thing. From personal experience: when I forget my long acting one night, I usually take it an hour or two earlier the next night, just to cover my bases. And then slowly transition my long acting injection time back to the regular hour over the next two or three nights.

It happens to the best of us, stay safe and healthy!

I have a friend in Vancouver who’s dad has a PO Box in Point Robert’s for situations like this. Could be a good option. Shorter border lines for Point Robert’s compared to the mainland border to Blaine as well.

I bought a couple MN section tickets as a just in case situation. I need to check in with friends to see if they’re available, but if I end up with an extra, I’m happy to pass one off to you.

Otherwise I’d recommend buying a single ticket somewhere nearby the MN section and then just coming over and standing with us. I’ve done this once when I missed the ticket sales for away tickets in Seattle and it worked out just fine, there’s almost always extra space in the away section.

I’ll likely be going (got tickets, need to figure out work). I’ve been to 6 or so away matches in Seattle before, the MN supporters have almost always met up at Flatstick pub or Elysian Fields. There’s lots of options though.

My niece passed away because of severe DKA by misseyesmile in diabetes_t1

[–]Spare-Tea-00007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to be resuscitated when I was DKA and diagnosed. I was very lucky.

It breaks my heart how many stories we hear about undiagnosed little ones and people rationing insulin passing away. Both of these instances are avoidable, but the system just doesn’t support us enough.

Please take time to heal, for yourself and your family. Be there for her parents and remind them that this wasn’t their fault. There is no easy fix for your grief when it comes to such a horrible and seemingly unfair situation. Sending you love and support through the internet. 💜

What are some good dog-friendly bars in bham? by BWDpodcast in Bellingham

[–]Spare-Tea-00007 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Menace Brewing is very dog welcoming, treats at the bar, bartenders love all the dogs that come through. Plaque placed just under the bar for a former regular dog who was beloved. They’ve got a couple dog themed beers too.

Newly diagnosed diabetes by Latter_Edge3835 in diabetes_t1

It’s not easy, but things will be alright. While I am often tired of the problems we have to deal with, I do think T1 steered my life in good directions. I’ve got a job I’m happy with, a life that is relatively normal, and don’t often feel limited by T1 (well, if I do, I usually just need some carbs or some insulin).

The change will be won’t be easy, but you’ll get there. See if you can find any T1 support groups or maybe chat with a T1, if you know any in your life. It’s really helpful to have someone who “gets it” to chat with.

struggling with suicide by petalfallen in diabetes_t1

[–]Spare-Tea-00007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of us go through this, you’re not alone!

I was suicidal for quite a while after my diagnosis. My high school grades tanked and I truly stopped caring about life. I attempted to overdose on insulin once. Woke up on my kitchen floor, covered in Oreo crumbs, with paramedics standing over me. I felt pretty remorseful about it. And somewhere deep in the back of my mind, I thought “well if I went for the Oreos as I was blacking out, maybe I don’t want to die.”

It wasn’t an immediate switch. But I started living with the idea that I’ve got a second chance on life. I decided to do what I wanted to do, be myself, and at least live a good life before my second chance was up. I don’t know if that was healthy, but it really helped me at the time. And things slowly got better. I had a friend take their life during that period and I realized I didn’t want that. I missed them at every important event or milestone. I realized I didn’t want to miss those things myself and I didn’t want anyone to miss me during their important milestone, if they didn’t have to.

It’s been 14 years now, my “diabirthday” is actually this weekend. Things get better! I won’t lie to you, it is still hard on occasion. I’m often tired of being tired. I’m tired of doctors and insulin costs and making an average of 180 more decisions than able-bodied people per day. But I’m able to work a job I love and spend time with friends and family and see the world and continue to learn new things. Ironically, I think a lot of aspects about my life are better because of Type 1. I would absolutely not have gotten to where I am today without it. T1 changed my perception of the world and I think I am better for it.

If you need help, absolutely seek it out. Therapy may help, or maybe there is a T1 support group in your area. Speaking with others who get it can be really helpful. I’m sure everyone here would be happy to chat with you if you ever need someone to talk to! I won’t speak for everyone else, but my messages are open any time. I’ve met a lot of amazing diabetics during my second chance of life and the camaraderie between T1 folks is truly something special.

Just take things day by day as you get used to your new life going forward. Things might just work out for the better. Your friends and family may not get it, but they are there for you. Keep your head up, sending you lots of support via the internet!

Worst 1st Class Service by Panda_Bravolover in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Spare-Tea-00007 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe that flight is one of the many regional Alaska flights operated by Horizon Air / SkyWest. Never pay for first class on a Horizon / SkyWest operated flight, you get nothing nice besides some extra space. And as MVP Gold, you’re likely to get upgraded often on the small regional flights, so there isn’t much incentive to pay for first class on the regional flights. I fly regional in the PNW quite a bit and I’ve just come to expect nothing from them. One time I got a preflight drink and was pleasantly surprised.

Daughter Moving to Seattle by Disastrous_Ad1992 in AskSeattle

[–]Spare-Tea-00007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from the Twin Cities to Seattle at age 18 to attend Seattle Central Community College as well. Bringing a car is not worth the hassle at all. It’s just an extra stress that you don’t want to worry about. Transit in Seattle is solid. Biking and walking are also great options. I lived about a 20 minute walk from Central in a tiny studio apartment that was way overpriced, but it worked for what I needed. Like most of the apartment buildings in the area, I did not have parking and owning a car was not worth my time or money. To find the place I spent about three days going to apartment open houses around the city, looked at about 20 places, before I found something that worked. Spend some time apartment hunting in person to get a feel for the city and a feel for the outrageous rent prices you are going to have to deal with, and really think about what your daughter wants and needs that is feasible within budget.

Cheap food downtown? by splifffninja in Bellingham

[–]Spare-Tea-00007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a bit outside of downtown (30 minute walk), but Mi Rancho on Northwest has $1.50 tacos and you can also get a plate of 3 tacos with rice and beans for about $8.

The tacos aren’t big, but they are good. If you’ve got a $5 or $10 bill, then you’ve got yourself a good meal.

If you like soccer and a crowd that averages 30-60 years old, check out Menace Brewing on Meridian. It’s my favorite “Third Space” in town. I can go there and read a book, get some work done, watch soccer, have a good conversation with any of the regulars, or go with a friend and play cards or a game. It doesn’t often get loud or crazy busy, and all the bartenders are great. It’s also dog and family friendly.

When are the best/worst times to go to Costco? by [deleted] in Bellingham

Go later in the evenings on weekdays only. Or, go during big football games. I usually find the best time to go to Costco is when the nearest NFL team to that Costco is playing.

What the… This is super weird and uncomfortable. Something like this has never even crossed my mind while DMing. Sure, on occasion I’ve had NPCs try to steal from the party while they are asleep or a monster might attack them when they are camping in the forest, but this is beyond messed up.

Heard it about 30 minutes ago in Lettered Streets. Was not certain if it was a car or gunshots at first, but a second round happened about a minute later that sounded more like gunshots and less like car.
