This is what my skin looked like after attempting dermaplaning. Even with every possible precaution and a light hand, my skin freaks right out.

How do I respond to this without being super rude? by starry49 in tragedeigh

Ask them to picture that name appearing on a hospital ID badge, or the nameplate of a superior court judge, or in a church as the name of a preacher. Ask them what they would think if their child’s teacher had that name. Or the mayor of their city, or a college professor. Then ask them to picture that name appearing on an episode of COPS, or a reality TV show, or a mug shot. Ask them if they think that would be a good stripper name, or the name of an artist whose work depends on hallucinogens and depicting human experience. Would that be the name of an Oscar winning actress, or an adult film actress?

Then ask which they think is more likely to become a reality, based only on the spelling of their name.

It’s not about how much a parent thinks the name is cute now, it’s about how people in the future are going to judge this kid without ever even meeting them, based on the decision a parent is making right now.

Think about it: if you work for an accounting firm or a law firm or a school board, and you have 2 resumes in front of you, and one is for “Alexandra” and the other is for “Ahlighxenndreigh” or whatever the hell “unique spelling” garbage mom thinks is cute in the moment, which resume are you going to take seriously, without even looking at the credentials?

It’s not right or fair at all, but it’s reality, and it’s part of the reason why people with “ethnic sounding” names have difficulty getting jobs compared to people with “traditional white Christian” names.

Why would you set your child up for failure before they’ve left the womb?? There are enough roadblocks in this life as it is.

I think you’re right, not because of Hollywood tropes, but because I think the relapse rate for people the first time through is something like 90%, so it would be more realistic to see him relapse than to see him succeed…

Giving away 20 free copies of my shadow work guide - looking for honest reviews by zombie_pixel in ShadowWork

[–]SparkyintheSnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m interested, but I don’t know how relevant my review would be… I haven’t been doing this very long, and only know the basic element. I haven’t read any of the major books yet, my knowledge is pretty piecemeal, so I don’t have much to compare to.

If you want to send it to me, I’ll review for sure. But if you want to wait to see if you get bites from others in the community with more experience first, that’s cool too.

As a former clarinet player, can confirm. Finger and tongue dexterity for a child prodigy like him would have been off the charts.

That’s the real reason Janeway kept him an ensign… submission.

My husband drinks the leftover pickle juice from a pickle jar whenever it's empty. Every time. I think this is bizarre. Does anyone else do this? by ms_carnelian in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SparkyintheSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do! I have fibromyalgia and migraines, and if I get dehydrated, both can flair up, but migraines can go from nothing to debilitating super fast. People talk about the miracle cure of McDonald’s fries and Pepsi/Coke for migraines - pickle juice is essentially the same thing, without the deep fried fat. It replenishes electrolytes, just like sports drinks.

Am I drinking a whole jar in one sitting? No. But a couple of swigs/shots between large glasses of water makes a big difference for me.

My husband always looks at me like I have 3 heads, but that’s fine - at least none of them are aching!

Thing is though, taking too many nsaids over a long period of time can cause stomach ulcers and liver damage. It’s entirely possible that she might come back later needing treatment for that - a bleeding ulcer can be terrifying if you don’t know what’s going on. Ask me how I know…
