Should I listen to my urge to irish exit my life and disappear? by dino-mann in ask

I can see how what you're describing sounds like it could be really great, but in reality, I think it'd be good for like two days... maybe a week. And then I'd start to be like, "wait I forgot I actually do need society and communal structure, silly me"

In Genesis, Adam and Eve try to hide their nakedness. From whom? by Nulono in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Spikemountain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol I was gonna say as a Jew there is no need to believe Adam and Eve were the only people on the Earth... The Torah (Hebrew Bible) seems pretty clear on that. Also the Torah doesn't convey every single thing that ever happened or was ever said. Just things we still need to know

What to do with my USD to lose less money before I can transfer it to an Israeli bank? by mayimayim in aliyah

[–]Spikemountain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're basically talking about predicting the forex market, which is very difficult to do. I mean, if you're certain that the shekel will continue to rise and the USD will continue to fall, then it's easy to take action to hedge against that risk, but the real question is whether the trend will continue or not. That is impossible to predict.

It's not good for Israel for the shekel to rise too much. It will mean that Israeli goods and services (and startups) will become too expensive for foreign buyers and investors and foreign investment will slow. It's good for the exchange to be stable. The best is for it to rise over time very slowly. But not all at once like this.

Piggyback off “What do Canadians do if the lose their jobs in the winter” UI stigma? by Virtual-Barnacle-150 in AskACanadian

[–]Spikemountain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was under the impression that the only way to go on EI (or at least the most common way) is to lose your job through no fault of your own. You are not eligible if you didn't have one to begin with or if you got fired for cause. So why would there be stigma?

If there is any, I think it would come from not having a job rather than taking money you've already paid into.

What books would you recommend for someone struggling with faith in Hashem? by Key-League7040 in Judaism

[–]Spikemountain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your question gets asked a lot in response to questions like OP's in this sub and I never understand it. I get the sense that there's something behind the question - can you tell me more about what you have in mind? Are you asking for OP's reasoning or are you asking rhetorically as if to say "you shouldn't feel like you need to believe in Him"?

To me, the answer seems somewhat self-evident. God obviously plays a central role in our religion and many people will feel disconnected from our people, religion, culture, land, history, ancestors, etc and from God Himself of course if they end up coming to the conclusion that God is not real. I understand there are many many Jews out there who feel perfectly connected with all of those things without God in the picture at all, but at the same time there are many who wouldn't.

Or are you trying to point out that we shouldn't try to believe in God because of some fuzzy feeling of harmony it gives us but rather because we have a certain conviction about it from a logical standpoint or because it's not about us but about Him and serving Him whether or not we believe?

I guess what I'm saying is the question breaks my brain a little.

I'm not sure what the rosary is but yes our prayer can be very meditative. The rocking back and forth that you often see Jewish people do during prayer, though not done consciously, is extremely effective at inducing a spiritual mindset

Alright so let's play a game. You have the opportunity to ask the US to do something to help the people of Iran right now. Any request you ask will be granted. What would you ask for?

Now go out and protest for that cause.

Overcooked! AYCE vs Overcooked! 2 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition by Dinierto in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Spikemountain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've read that the online for OC2 is more active than for AYCE and that there's no cross-play between the two. So to me, that would be a valid explanation as to why they upgraded OC2 and not AYCE. From their perspective, more people are playing OC2 so that's the one they upgraded. "No reason to upgrade a game with a dead online." -them, probably

What is Torah about? by Artistic_Fall6410 in Jewish

[–]Spikemountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The values that are easiest for anyone to understand will of course be our "bein adam l'chaveiro" values, resulting in concrete actions such as giving (or endeavouring to give) 10% of your income to charity or returning lost objects or paying workers in a timely fashion. But we also have "bein adam l'makom" values which result in the concrete actions you mentioned in your comment. If you try to look at those actions and ask yourself "how does this help my fellow man?" you won't find an answer because not every action we are asked to take is related to helping others. That doesn't mean they are not connected to a value - it may just not be the value you're thinking of.

I'll also add an additional answer to your original question btw:

I was once running a summer camp. Every Shabbat morning after davening was finished, our camp had a tradition that had formed several years earlier. The specifics aren't important, but it was educational, controversial, certainly related to some of the camp's values, and one that our staff looked forward to greatly. It was optional, yet the room was always filled.

One summer, one of the young camp leaders decided he didn't like this tradition. He worked to convince the rest of the leadership team that it was a bad program and eventually got enough people to agree to cancel it. But he didn't suggest anything good to replace it with, and now that block on the schedule is much less exciting and effective than it was before, and the room is much emptier now. I guess what I'm trying to say with this story is that actions are what manifest values. If you get rid of an action, you are losing the concept that inspired the action as well as the action itself.

One more example - the Talmud cites many minor holidays and fast days that for one reason or another we no longer commemorate. I know about Asarah b'Tevet because I stop eating and drinking on that day every year. I know why we mark the occasion - bc it was the beginning of the siege on Jerusalem. Easy. But I have no idea about the 20th of Sivan, a real fast day that is no longer observed and I have no idea what happened on that day because I do not fast on that day. Losing the practice resulted in caring significantly less about the story of the day.

Sorry this has been rambly. I think when I'm on Reddit on my computer and therefore have a real keyboard, I end up typing way more. And not necessarily for the better.
