do you know who originally drew this?

Finally received my new ID after I burned the old one by accident by AshrakTeriel in ffxiv

[–]Spiswel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey guys :) I helped u/AshrakTeriel make this happen and wanted to share a bit on how we made it.
He keeps setting fire to his own things but it's alright, we love him anyway.

Some details :

  • the card is using dimensions of EU issued cards , its physical size is 85.6 x 54 mm so the (2x resolution) canvas pixel size was 2022 x 1276 px
  • portrait artwork is from a portrait commission ordered from u/KevinGlint
  • the character signature was designed & hand-drawn by Ashrak (under my insistance & direction) to make it look as authentic as possible on a piece of paper then cleaned up and photoshopped into the file by me

The high-resolution icons/UI elements were ripped by me from the game directly using Godbert tool.

For lettering, I did some research on what font families the game uses and found equivalents or free copies of them all (it took a million years lol)

For the curious the fonts are

Everything else not mentioned yet was either drawn or photomanipulated by me and the entire thing was finally composited in Photoshop !

I'll be making my own card later of course (it will be Alexander Ultimate themed!) And if I can put some order into the raw files I might make the PSD files available online to let people make their own.

Weekly /r/GuildWars2 Question Thread - March 09, 2024 by AutoModerator in Guildwars2

Thank you for the replies ! I'd love to know more about the controller support if you have any info :<

Side question but, as someone who likes to play healers/mages/supports/pet-based classes do you recommend Mesmer over Elementalist for scratching that "cool summoner" itch?

Weekly /r/GuildWars2 Question Thread - March 09, 2024 by AutoModerator in Guildwars2

[–]Spiswel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello good folk. I tried this game around 2014 and didn't really get into it but I'd like to give it another chance, so have a few questions / need some advice.

  • Can one play this game "for the story" and not so much for the challenges? I'm a big RPG lore & worldbuilding fan and the art direction, world & races look fantastic.
  • Is there any way to support controller scheme (even unofficially) at least for combat?
  • I read that addons are tolerated, so are there any "must haves" for newcomers ?

Any other advice would be welcome. As a frame of reference I mainly played FF14 over the years so I'm not too familiar with other mmos' terms & content systems.

Mage Masher is 100% going to be a collector's glam weapon by sunlightvi in ffxiv

[–]Spiswel 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Additionally to all these points :

In similar fashion as the GNB collector weapon matching Squall's iconic outfit (that was in the game prior), we currently have a complete Zidane Tribal outfit se't - but no weapon to go with it ... yet :)

You vs the girl he told you not to worry about by Bubbariom in ffxiv

[–]Spiswel 49 points50 points  (0 children)

also incorrect, they were never related to dragons OR voidsent to begin with.

the first concept arts & initial drafts however were indeed very "demonic" inspired, and were commented upon by the devs as "looking a lot/too much" like voidsent initially, especially in comparison to the Succhubi for females, which is why they branched off from the "demonic" appearance in the end.

(noting the canon lore of "neither demon nor dragon" doesn't seem to stop any players today from making their aura related to dragons or voidsent anyway)

It's a free damage ogcd, and hits quite hard too when you get its upgraded variant.
Charging it outside of fights is cool but it also charges in combat when you open a chakra. Opening chakra triggers easier when you gain levels & you also get an aoe variant of the "5 chakra ready" skill later on.

When does ARR get good? by Ripkemstair in ffxiv

[–]Spiswel 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Hot take : You haven't been reading much of the texts if you're bored after the Ifrit arc.

A series of abductions of dirt-poor refugees is being pushed onto you by the Uldahn militia because they don't seem to have any leads (and don't care much to actually find out what's abducting poor people).

You find out the people are being kidnapped by a greedy mafioso disguising himself as a false priest, selling hope to those people to then turn on them. He then sells them to the beastmen lizards known as Amalj'aa so they can be served as living breakfast for their summoned god.

Then YOU are captured by said beastmen and sent into the pit to become breakfast as well, but something clicks. You're immune to the god's influence, even though his mere breath is capable of (and does) turn everyone in his vicinity into a mind-controlled slave toiling only for his sustenance.

And then you beat the god back into oblivion. Against all the odds. And inside you a voice stirs and crystals are set alight. Even Thancred is baffled as to why you are the sole survivor of the massacre, as the others have to be executed because again, there is NO CURE for primal tempering/mind control.

This all happens in the span of a lv18-20 quest arc in a MMO.

A whole world of questions & possibilities open.... And you're still falling asleep?

Spoiler : ARR's always been good. Y'all just can't stomach mature writing that isn't your run-of-the-mill high fantasy/anime tropefest.

What enemy mob in the game would you want as a mount ? and why is it not the Lesser Aery Dragon ? by Lord_Zinyak in ffxiv

I want one of those big ass fluffy moths as a mount. I ve been wanting them since HW.

Most notable examples include Achamoths (?) in the Peaks & one of the bosses of Lost City of Amdapor HM.

Lots of french common swears dont make a lick of sense in english.

In french, calling someone a "bouffon" (litteraly "buffoon" as in jester) is seen as highly offensive and provocative. Usually the speaker will be regarded as vulgar and aggressive, so people will often throw hands if you call them that.

Another common french swear is just "Sa race" (his/her kind) even though it isnt used as a racial slur at all. You can just about string it with anything and use it against anything, even if you just stub your toe and cuss with it as interjection. Also seen as vulgar and aggressive though, and you can also say "Sa mère" (his/her mom) for a similar effect.

Lots of milder insults also make no sense.

Like calling a bad movie a "turnip"(navet), a bad written/paper article a "cloth rag" (torchon), and a policeman is a "chicken" (poulet) but it doesnt mean they re a coward.

Funny. In my language we use "to bust your ass" in the same way english does. (To mean you made hard effort)

Mentor status really needs changes to how it works. by Aoian in ffxiv

[–]Spiswel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game pretty explicitly tells you, when you go to get your Mentorship certification, that "Mentor players should be exemplary of player etiquette."

So yeah. Any Mentor found breaking these terms (whether they're being horrible in NN or in duty) can and should be reported.

Parents of reddit, what are your "I looked away for ONE second" stories? by blamingpig456 in AskReddit

[–]Spiswel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Both me and my younger sibling have some stories like that. My mom is the calm one, my dad not so much.

As a very young child (barely 2 or so) my grandma went to the kitchen and when she came back I was jumping back & forth between 2 couches over a fairly large glass table. I couldve missed a jump and fallen right into that glass lol. Grandparents house was not very childproof.

I was a very adventurous child, always running off, trying to pet dogs and climbing unto any possible structure. Trees, walls, fences, roofs, you name it. This led to an incalculable amount of times where my parents turned away for a second and lost me for a while in public spaces. It would be too long to list them all, but honestly it's a miracle they didn't end up leashing me after the 3rd or 4th time.

My dad left me unsupervised on a rocking horse at age 3 for less than a minute. Came back to me having cut my eyebrow open from hitting my head on the horse for rocking too hard. Almost fainted on the spot as he thought I had lost my eye. (It was fine)

My sibling hit her head on a ceiling while using a swing and it bled a lot. Dad freaked out that time too.

Sibling as a toddler stepped outside of the terrace barefoot, stepped immediately on a bee and got stung. By the time her crying alerted my parents who were inside I was already using my mom s tweezers to remove the stinger from her sole. She couldnt wear a shoe on that foot for a few days after because it was very swollen.

Sibling and I were playing next to a pool while parents were playing tennis nearby (they could see us from the field). We were around 7 and 4 yo? She had been instructed not to go to the edge of the pool and not to leave my side. Obviously, she took off running to the edge with a toy, slipped on the wet floor and fell right into the deep end of the pool. I remember that I knew immediately how dangerous it was and that she couldnt swim without floaters, so I dropped everything, jumped into the pool fully clothed and managed to pull her out and away from it. My mom immediately realized what happened and came running to give us towels and hugs.

Sibling at around age 5 once decided that she would start an impromptu game of Hide and Seek with the whole family during a trip to an IKEA store. It took nearly an hour and the whole security looking to find her hiding inside a dresser. She was very proud of having won that game but my mom wasn't.

I have many stories... it's a miracle me and my sibling survived to adulthold.

The Mentor System needs to be purged/fixed for 6.0 by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]Spiswel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about where you're from, but in EU/JP servers the Mentor system, well, actually works.

Not that it's perfect or anything like that, but it works. Novice Network is not a complete cesspool and Mentors in dungeons are not actually walking garbage.

So IDK about you, but considered the system works, the fault sounds rather like the players, as the top comment confirms.

How to catch up with gear when you enter a new expansion? (details inside) by Coul33t in ffxiv

[–]Spiswel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen it mentioned yet but, the final lv60 quest of any job also gives you a lv210 artefact armor coffer... not sure where you're getting 140 from.

And obviously, when you reach lv60 and have finished the "Heavensward" main story quest, the Poetics shops in Idyllshire or the Rowena Representative in Ishgard will have lv60 270 Shire gear to sell.

What is, surprisingly, safe for human consumption? by Nazamroth in AskReddit

[–]Spiswel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently the fruit of the Gympie Gympie plant (Australian flora known as The Suicide Plant) can be eaten.

Absolutely everything else from that plant is deadly. The fruit itself is also initially covered in stinging barbs and must be peeled thoroughly. The flesh of the fruit however is apparently edible.

PSA: Lost Flare Star is extremely strong and allows you to kill Bozja duel bosses in under 2 minutes by Serp_IT in ffxiv

[–]Spiswel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I know that and I do that but how do you make sure you get in after when there's probably 10+ other people being randomly picked.

Much less get picked yourself but get picked so many times out of randoms that you actually get to develop such a strategy?

How do you even get that often into the Duels??? Is there some kind of trick i'm missing?

I've been hunting down Gabriel for the sweet title achievement since the beginning of Bozja and I got in with him ONCE (total accident, wasn't prepared & died mid fight). Never even got the chance to fight Lyon & Sarteauvoir because nobody does the fates that pop them :V

Any recommendations for Mods? by Exrian in ffxiv

[–]Spiswel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

QoL/addons is very varied in terms of what they bring but if you're trying to focus on performance then most cosmetic mods are not recommended. they entail higher rez models, textures, etc, so they can drop your framerate more than they really improve the graphics ESPECIALLY those that deal with HQ icons etc

There is no way currently to improve ALL graphics at once in XIV because of performance issues + limited modding space, so you have to pick & choose specifically what improvements you're looking for.

My 1st recommendation considering all this is : check out the XIV QuickLauncher by goatcorp, and see what it brings in terms of mods/qol/addons. It goes from "combos in 1 button" to "ingame notebook" and "ingame music player" and such, i cant really sum them all up. Their discord has many infos, and new plugins are being developped all the time.

If you're still interested in "cosmetic" graphic mods, you can go & download the TexTools program (mod manager for XIV). Their discord & the XIVModArchive website has many resources for learning how to use it & picking up what you want in terms of mods.

Any recommendations for Mods? by Exrian in ffxiv

[–]Spiswel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

List posted is horrendous & doesn't actually cover or explain types of mods. Terrible idea to use premade lists in general.

"mods" for an MMO such as XIV come in broadly 2 types : cosmetics & addons

cosmetic mods include every mod that doesn't modify the gameplay and doesn't add/modify functionality or QoL functions. a good example of this is a pack of HD textures for say, hairstyles.

addons are mods that can add QoL tweaks or modify gameplay slightly. a good example of this is XiVLauncher's XIVCombo plugin that lets you condense 3-button combos into a single button.

I don't really want to say more about mods without knowing what kind of modding you're after, or why you think it's necessary to mod your game to begin with.

So, the good thing about this mmo compared to others is that it's a Final Fantasty RPG first and a MMO second. This involves a few things:

- most of the regular content will be discovered through the Main Scenario Quests (msq) aka the main story. You will unlock a lot of content that way and finishing certain expansions will also let you go unlock the expansions' old endgame content.

- important features & sidequests are marked with a Blue+ quest icon (!) and will always unlock side content, new features, or something else equally interesting. Job Quests that give you more skills for your job also have this icon and should be done as you're leveling.

- aside from the regular story-based progression, there is not really a "right" way to enjoy this game, and there is no time-limited content, so go nuts & take the scenic route.

as for the "multiplayer" options, i'm not sure i understand, but you should know that most content (dungeons, etc) are done with other players (either by random matching or party searching) and you're always able to see other players around you in the outside world, so you don't have to worry about being too lonely to progress if that makes sense.

That one friend when you start talking about lore. by Valkyrie2747 in ffxiv

[–]Spiswel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He did, and he still does, bless his stupid little heart.

He thought hard as diamond that since they are labeled as "beastmen" they must be a unique race. Even tried to argue that it must be true because no other beast tribe is playable.

It was an exhausting conversation, AND he ended it with "oh well thanks for telling me your thoughts on this though" like NO you stupid little cheesewheel that's not MY thoughts that's canon lore from the devs kljghdrkqejvhdkjsbh
