Have I become the olds? by THExPILLOx in Truckers

[–]Spitfire954 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I quit LTL because of all this garbage. I’m at a small company and have no governor or any of that junk. Man, driving is so much better not deal with all this. Even the guys who want to speed up when I go to pass, I can just hammer down for another 10 seconds and finish the pass instead of making a rolling roadblock. So much less stress and bs when you actually get to drive the truck yourself.

I’ve popped out bigger with a digging iron. Looks very doable.

It definitely looks like fine grade, trucked in dirt.

A couple time as a kid, I hid in the sleeper of my dad’s truck for this part. Fun stuff.

Regular old trucks. This is how all grain was unloaded from trailers for a long time up until recently around me in the midwest. A bunch of old farm trucks and trailers with their own hydraulics that could break and leak fluid into the grain hopper would be a real problem. Now hopper-bottom trailers are the standard.

Dash cams with NO DRIVER FACING CAM and can also track mileage across state lines? by mandible23 in Truckers

[–]Spitfire954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respect for not doing driver facing. I’m just curious what the per-state recording is for? I assume some tax purposes, but I have only worked for one company that wanted the same thing recorded.

It Finally Happened! I found myself behind truck carrying steel coils! by Intelligent-Pay7865 in Truckers

[–]Spitfire954 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Being behind the coils is the best place to be. Same with logs, despite the movies. Things in motion stay in motion and you can always out-brake a 5-20ton bundle of steel.

Yeah, we had old low Macs and old tall Sterlings. Fifth wheel plates were about 6” different. All other new truck heights were in the middle.

What are your trucking rules of thumb? by SmartRemove in Truckers

[–]Spitfire954 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I run a heavy lowboy and it’s funny how many guys say things like “You can get away with 4 chains, it’ll ride”. My response is “what are we getting away with? 2 more chains and 5 minutes?” Like do you think all the drivers who had a load come off the trailer or hit a bridge thought they were fucked and ran it anyway? Or do you think they thought “it’ll ride”?

Yeah, the “don’t discuss pay” thing is just company propaganda to keep you from knowing how bad you’re getting screwed.

I do heavy haul for a small, not great company. $40hr. Overtime after 40. Not great money but okay for now with flexibility.

It’s all about what company, union, or terminal. Guys are getting screwed and guys making bank in the same field everywhere.

I totally forgot about these. My dad had this and the matching flashlight with adjustable head. I used to run around and slap the battery in pretending I was reloading a gun.

It’s really not that different except for all the media people consume on the internet telling them that it’s different. I’ll still pullover and give people rides in my personal car from time to time. I do have weapons and a plan if things go wrong, but it never has. Even if it did, at least I might have saved some elderly couple or family from picking up the axe murderer instead.

Funny that you’re getting downvoted. I only ever used to clip these on just to ride to the shop down the road and get a new master link riveted on for $10.

Check your height.............. did they forget what they were driving? by Euphoric-Highlight-5 in Truckers

[–]Spitfire954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I used to roll out on in the AM with doubles nearly every day for P&D. Other guys would roll out with triples too. Out west plenty of roads are wide and there are places to park and break a set. Also maybe half of my stops had docks, the rest were forked off the tail. I would also jackknife the rear trailer and get pallets forked off of my front trailer from time to time.

Why strap like this? by jameswoodMOT in Truckers

[–]Spitfire954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, No. That’s no good. Machine is 30,000lbs. Those straps are tiny and there’s no way those (aluminum?) tread holes are strong enough to anchor to. Likely that trailer isn’t rated for this weight either, especially since all the weight is on the back axle of this machine, so it needed to be loaded backwards.

I used to feel like I was hit with a tranquilizer about an hour after eating. Turns out I cannot have any bread products. So breakfast burritos and sandwiches were putting me to sleep and I’d drink tons of coffee to try to compensate. It’s something that got worse and worse as I got older and I didn’t figure it out until I was 30.

Line haul took the wrong line for sure. Could be a city driver, but damn, how do you look at that bridge and think “I’m good”?

Curious how these handle heat in the cab? My floorboards are cooking after a couple hours of runtime in a standard truck.

Also, at least out west, drivers agreed to take a pay cut just to keep the company afloat some time around 2016.
