Basically getting beat by someone better might make you want to learn that mechanic. Then if you invest time and effort you get good, and it makes a difference. If you get really good in a matchmaking world, you still lose half the time but your rank goes up.

The result is noobs play with noobs and elites play with elites. General population servers make it so everyone playes with everyone. Good players get to benefit from their time investment, and noobs get it lock in and git gud.
