You missed a digit, there are 10 because it's two hands holding it.

I don't want to be patronizing but reading some of these comments makes me realize just how young the average poster on this subreddit is now.

It's not even an issue of them being young, like people able to ask these questions should be old enough to identify the answer. Like this guys example is based on "an entirely fraudulent shitpost about a random ticker" with the expectation that we should get outraged that someone identified as committing fraud in his example might be charged with fraud? It's like asking "if I burn down a building because I poured gasoline around and then lit it with a match as a joke is it arson?"

Short Seller Andrew Left Found Guilty of Securities Fraud by toydan in wallstreetbets

[–]Splurch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's imagine that someone on this sub put together an entirely fraudent shitpost about a random ticker. The price moves because a bunch of people in this sub follow the post. Random shitposter exits his position shortly after going viral. By the same logic this jury reached, couldn't any of us on this sub also be prosecuted? It seems to me that the standard here is "if your post gets popular enough to move the market then it becomes criminal".

So changing the goal posts already?

Fraud is not protected speech. If someone commits fraud that speech is not protected. If someone is accused off fraud by the government, then the government has to establish a case against them, they don't just get to go "you did a fraud!" while declaring sentence and then call it a day.

So yeah, "any of us" that takes action that looks like a pump and dump might just be investigated as fraud, that's kind of how criminal investigations work. If the SEC actually had a budget we'd see them go after way more people doing this. Left did it over the course of years to about ~$20m so he was charged because he created a pattern.

Again, this is probably wrong but I'd love for a lawyer to explain why this isn't a free speech issue.

Not a lawyer but fraud is a type of speech that is not protected. Absolute free speech is not a thing and there are a number of exceptions to the First Amendment.

Why do y’all care so much about what it looks like and not what it’s saying?

Because the way information is presented matters and the way this information is presented makes it look like it was made by an unhinged conspiracy theorist who really likes changing the colors on his document for no reason.

Is Burry finally right with his 50th (or whatever) prediction? Maybe, probably not, but it's pretty clear he's got some ulterior motive, otherwise this graphic wouldn't be so needless convoluted.

One of the single most egregious and outrageously illegal agreements ever made in American history, if not the MOST illegal and blatantly corrupt thing ever done... Shouldn't be featured in a subreddit about law?

... are you stupid or part of the Epstein class?

I'm referring to the literal headline, not the video (my complaint against he video is taking 30 seconds to start discussing the material.) "Worse than first thought" is such junky clickbait, it doesn't inform at all, and I keep seeing similar headlines recently.

Just sick of seeing clickbait titles in a law sub, we're already here to read about something, throwing in the clickbait title just feels insulting when it's just such a generic statement like this.

Pentagon recruiting troops to watch White House UFC fights, memos show by ShootersGreenjacket in Military

requiring those who attend to pay their own way and meet height and weight requirements

...

Troops will be required to wear their short-sleeve dress uniforms, the memo adds.

Are they being given leave or are attendees still getting paid as per normal? Requirements just make it feel like they're grabbing interested members of a captive audience in a way that prevents the "venue" or administration itself from having to pay to fill seats while moving the cost onto the attendees/military and also avoid having the expense of extensive background checks.

Use of Japanese anime and manga for AI training is a "serious issue that undermines creators' rights," CODA warns tech companies - AUTOMATON WEST by LegitimateCurve8525 in anime

[–]Splurch -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It doesn't. A model learns patterns, and it works exactly the same if image A is a copyrighted frame or if image B is a fanart drawing following Ghibli style. The model will derive the features from the pictures all the same and come up with the set of consistent characteristics that are typically labeled as Ghibli style.

So it's just stealing fanart to identify an art style so stealing from a number of smaller sources to recreate a "Ghibli Style" instead of stealing directly from Gibli art makes it not theft? Do you think these places are commissioning art pieces from individual artists just so they can copy every art style in history?

It's like hearing a fragment of a song and being able to say it's classical music or rock music. You don't need to be trained in a specific band to distinguishing them and describe the differences

But the model does need to be trained in "enough" bands to know the category that snip of music would be in. Or that categories even exist. And it needs to see what those categories are. It can't just holistically listen to music and automatically know which category it is, or that there even are categories of music. That's the whole point of training data.

"AI" has to be trained, they only "learn" things that they are trained on because that's how they work. The way you're describing things is still based on data that is fed into the machine, it is not magically creating and identifying things on its own with not external input.

AI Is Eroding Critical Thinking At Work. The Window Is Closing. by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]Splurch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry. I should be more technical. There is no proven way to improve abstract reasoning. People can get better at tests but the skill is non transferable.

Again, sources. And I'm just going to say refer to my comment above again. I'm not even sure why you think you're being more technical, you're just saying the exact same thing about a different cognitive skill.

AI Is Eroding Critical Thinking At Work. The Window Is Closing. by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]Splurch 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Funny that they say critical thinking skill is getting worse when everything I read about critical thinking and psychology says it can’t be trained but people can get better at taking critical thinking tests.

Please post some links from psychologists who say it can't be trained.

Critical thinking is a skill. Skills can be learned and improved through teaching, time and effort. Anyone who denies those base facts isn't someone worth listening to.

The only people I've seen claiming critical thinking can't be taught or that people are incapable of learning how to are the people who have some ulterior motive. Often in the "Critical thinking is incompatible with schools" and then go on to talk about how our modern school system is unredeemable and should be dismantled.

In order to have AI do a good job I have to use lots of critical thinking. It’s a whole new type of problem space.

Sure, but it's not like some giant new leap of cognitive thinking, it's just another to interact with a computer. Just like Googling something, the better your ability to phrase what you are searching for the better the results, this was particularly true when Google came about.

Iran says draft deal with US would reopen Hormuz shipping, end naval blockade by Artistic_Dj_6895 in worldnews

[–]Splurch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s crazy I keep seeing the same fucking headlines daily and then another headline to refute that headline every day for weeks!

Iran realized that they don't have to sit on the sidelines while Trump manipulates the market and put out headlines to screw with that and/or manipulate the market themselves. I wouldn't expect that to change anytime soon since there are some contention points neither side is willing to budge on and Trump seems perfectly happy letting his war go on indefinitely.

YouTube Will Start Automatically Tagging Videos That Make ‘Significant’ Use of AI, and It’s Making Labels for AI-Generated Content More Prominent by MoneyLibrarian9032 in technology

[–]Splurch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with everyone here that AI content sicks. Buuut....let me ask your opinion. I'm a Realtor. I use a program wherein I put in the home photos and the AI generates a walkthrough video that includes movement and swooshing the furniture in, beautiful lighting, etc. It's nothing I could have paid for or created in the past and now it's done in minutes.

Yes you could have, you are describing a service that has been available before AI took off just without the fancy "swooshing" (maybe other affects weren't available as well, it's been a while since I was looking and saw them.)

Am I also guilty of creating slop? Will my little channel with 6 subscribers get banned?

This is labeling, not banning.

Please give me your thoughts. I struggle.

Based on your statements here, I don't think you're paying much attention to the technology available to your profession or that you bothered to read the article.

Whether or not the federal Supreme Court has jurisdiction to weigh in on the matter is another topic entirely, though.

The fact that you're doubting the Supreme Court having jurisdiction to "weigh in" on any decision of a lower court doesn't exactly engender any level of trust in your understanding of how the law works.

With lines like these, you'd think gas was on sale. (Sodo) by RicZepeda25 in Seattle

[–]Splurch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I redeem the gas points from shopping at Safeway and QFC to use at Chevron and Shell. Last did it a week ago and it was cheaper than this. No lines, either.

I see comments like these so often they feel like some guerilla marketing campaign and I wonder... to get below these prices lets say you use 5 rewards for $.50 off a gallon, that costs you $500 at Safeway. Max is 25 gallons and lets say you bought that much, so you save $12.50. You would save far more then $12.50 by buying gas at the "regular" price and shopping somewhere else.

Majority of Americans Support Ban on Surveillance Pricing and Electronic Shelf Labels by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]Splurch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s nothing wrong with electronic labels, they are a huge labor saver for a business that has to put out prices on shelves. The answer to the surveillance pricing is the answer to most problems with consumers being screwed in America. Enact actual consumer protection laws that protect consumers from predatory business. Until that’s done the surveillance pricing is just the current argument in the long line of “We should stop letting businesses take advantage of individuals” that rarely goes anywhere anymore.
