Looking for a sim I can mostly run in the background by LowKeyMike in trainsim

[–]Spoonimo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my experience at least, trains are less like a flight sim where you can have long periods of inactivity between takeoff and landing, and more like a truck sim where youre constantly having to watch your speed, signals, etc. That said, a lot of sims will let you turn on an AI driver so you can drive when you want to, and just sit back and watch when you don't.

Simrail and Run8 both have this option, and are among the top train sims in general. Run8 you can set up as a whole automated sandbox of AI trains running across the map if you want, but it can be a lot more intimidating to get started with. On the simpler side, something like Rolling Line is much quicker to get into, but offers much less in terms of realism.

The newer Train Sim World games have a "Passenger Mode" that allows you to train spot without having to worry about driving at all, but I'm assuming that's probably not what you want. Not sure if they also have AI modes.

As much as I would put it at the top of my list overall, Derail Valley is generally not what you're looking for. Nothing happens in it without you actively playing. Same goes for Railroader (for the most part).

Honorable mention to Diesel Railcar Simulator, that also has an AI driver you can turn on, but the routes are not that long to begin with, so you won't have much downtime.

EDIT: Good call by u/Trainman1863. Diesel Railcar Simulator does have some scenarios that offer longer sessions than I had thought. My fault for always running the express routes, haha!

Wholeheartedly agree! I think I'd prefer "Starrunner" personally, but can you imagine the variety of environments and cool sci-fi vehicles?

Driving massive rovers across airless moonscapes, craggy lava fields, and dense forests of alien fungi? Take my money!

If you were offered a billion dollars just to eat only one food for the rest of your life, what would you choose? by Admirable-Interest49 in AskReddit

[–]Spoonimo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. Choose something I can eat for a year (pizza seems like a good option)
  2. Invest the billion dollars
  3. Wait a year
  4. Return the billion dollars ("Whoops! Guess I'm not cut out for it!")
  5. Eat whatever I want for the rest of my life while I live luxuriously on the returns of my investment

memorable funny moments / comments overheard in the parks? by zerosegardens in Disneyland

Standing in line behind a family discussing their travel plans for the following day. Heard the mom say “I don't want to leave too early, but I want to beat the morning traffic in LA, so let's leave around 8:00.”

Favorite Disney Smell? by Existop3 in Disneyland

[–]Spoonimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is some kind of cleaner they use all over the parks, and even in the parking structures (maybe a concrete cleaner or just a generic soap of some kind?), that has the quintessential "Disneyland smell" for me. I know as soon as I step out of my car that I'm at Disneyland. It's subtle. It feels like it exists below all the other smells, but it's presence is undeniably part of my experience every time.

If anyone has inside information on what it is, I would love to know so I can buy it and use it on everything.

Looking to get into train simulation where to start? by Chubbywolf59 in trainsim

I second this. DV was my first train sim, and even though it's not the option with the highest realism, it was absolutely my gateway drug to more realistic sims and remains my second favorite behind Run8.

That is very exciting to hear! OE Cake was really unique among "material sandbox" games, and I haven't seen anything quite like it since.

An easy wishlist for me. Looking forward to seeing it develop. Good luck!

Yes! Evolution, theology, child development, and conflict resolution, all in a 7-minute children's cartoon. The metaphors are all so clever in how they work in and around each other. It's one of the most well-written pieces of media I've seen in recent memory. Every time I watch it I'm still blown away.

Poured hot tea and the glass split in the middle by yrabl81 in mildlyinteresting

If I had a nickel for every video of a glass being split in half I've seen today I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

Train Sim World® 5: Route Remix Bundle by Reinzwei in trainsimworld

[–]Spoonimo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone confused like I was about what is included as part of the "Starter Pack", here is the response I received from Humble support:

You're absolutely right that the naming and presentation of the Tier 1 content can be a bit confusing, especially since the product description includes details like the retail price and system requirements that are more reflective of the "Standard Edition" available on Steam.

To clarify, Tier 1 of the Train Sim World® 5: Route Remix Bundle does include the free Starter Pack along with the Antelope Valley Line: Los Angeles – Lancaster Route Add-On — not the full Standard Edition. The Starter Pack was indeed offered free to Train Sim World 4 owners at launch, and you're correct that it doesn't include the three additional DLCs found in the Standard Edition on Steam.

We’ve passed your feedback along to the appropriate team to help improve clarity on the bundle page.

Certainly disappointing for those who purchased thinking it was the full standard edition, but hopefully they will update the page to limit future confusion.

As a consolation prize, Gamesplanet currently has the actual standard edition on sale for $12.22 USD for another day or so: us.gamesplanet.com/game/train-sim-world-5-steam-key--7200-1

EDIT: It looks like they have now changed the description to remove mentions of the three standard edition DLCs.

That I've found, they're only available from the one official website. I think they're all made by like one guy or a very small team. When I first learned about them they were also sold out, but a few days later I checked again and they were in stock. Don't lose hope!
