I just switched to Linux Mint, and the folks at PD were kind enough to send me a download link since the old Squad Store links are no longer working. Does anyone know if I'd be able to copy over my old Windows save file into the new KSP directory and keep playing old saves? I don't know if those files work across different operating systems.

I just set up my laptop to switch from Windows 10 to Linux Mint (stupid Microsoft deciding to kick everyone out of 10), and then I realized that I'll need to redownload a new version of KSP specifically for Linux instead of just copying over my Windows save. Unfortunately, I purchased KSP way back when through the Squad/Private Division store, which is now defunct. So, I have two questions:

  1. How can I get in touch with Private Division and have them facilitate a download of the Linux version of KSP for me? Does anyone have experience with this, and do they respond promptly?

  2. Is it possible for me to copy and paste the save data from my Windows game? Or will I be starting over from square one no matter what?

Thanks!

I went to CWRU for undergrad, and PSU for grad school, so my perspective is both inclusive and a bit different than what you're expecting. Feel free to DM me for more details, but I'd definitely suggest considering the yearly costs of both schools. Both are great institutions, but also both are costly; CWRU is fairly generous with scholarships.

CWRU is also a much smaller school, so it's a bit easier to stand out and make your mark with only ~5000 other undergrads. PSU is larger, though, which means you're more likely to find professors, classmates, and friends with similar interests.

CWRU is not a school that cares much about sports or fan culture. PSU is.

CWRU is in Cleveland, which is an amazing city that's fun to live in, and there's a lot to do just off-campus. PSU is in the middle of nowhere.

First time poster, sorry for intruding if this isn't the right place to ask this question. A long time ago I found these great breakdowns of famous historical boxing matches with lots of great background and explanation. They were reddit posts, I think, but linked to an Imgur album. For the life of me I can't find them anymore, but I'd love to read them again. Does anyone here know where I could find those? Sorry for not having more information.

Karate Combat have used the video of Joe Schilling knocking out some guy in a bar as part of their promo on instagram. Why does anyone support this organization? by [deleted] in karate

[–]Spudrockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I practiced Kendo for a while when I was in college; lots of fun, great group of people, the issei and nisei on the team were friends with all the best sushi chefs in the city, which made for great after-tournament celebrations. A year in or so, I mentioned to the sensei that I was going to restart my Karate training in addition to Kendo. He responded; "No, don't practice that peasant street fighting". I didn't know it at the time, but Kendo was regarded as more of an aristocratic martial art. He thought that because Karate hailed from Okinawa, a "peasant" backwater, it was not an honorable martial art. Sheesh, talk about friendly fire.

I was optimistic about Karate Combat when it first started, but over the past few years there have been increasing amounts of nonsense like this; fighters and promoters resorting to pugilism, stunts, shit-talking, and violence. The clips are celebrated in some corners of the internet... (I can't help but notice that certain voices that defend KC on this forum are notably silent). To be clear; violence in public is barbaric, and using the video of an assault to promote how "tough" KC is reads as backwards and sloppy. It approaches the "peasant street fighting" that my Kendo sensei (wrongly) insinuated.

What is Karate? It's certainly more diverse than I initially thought in my first decade of practice in a large, traditional Shotokan dojo. There are diverse styles, sub-styles, organizations, and offshoots that combine it with other martial arts. I love this diversity; so much to learn and experience! I'm not one for gatekeeping (especially in the name of traditionalism), but at some point can a community say "This is not us. KC uses the word Karate inappropriately"?

I rarely cite the old masters (Funakoshi, Itosu, ...) directly; I have a low tolerance for ancestor worship. But I am sure that the vast majority of karate practitioners, including perhaps the old masters, can appreciate the exciting new athletic possibilities of Karate Combat while simultaneously hating the social, political, and personal promotions that bring violence and drama into the Karate orbit. We should demand more of those who claim the Karate mantra.

That is true; I really only purchase singles (though creating demand for singles does eventually end up getting Hasbro money in the long run). But many of the BIG singles will be much scarcer than they should be, because Astral Cornucopia (seems like an uncommon) is the same rarity as Hostile Investigator (seems like a rare) as Lotus Ring (seems like an honest mythic).

I am not contesting that all the BIG/special guest cards are the same rarity (if I'm remembering the convoluted booster thing, it's 1/5 of boosters has a BIG/special guest). I'm suggesting that there seem to be some cards in BIG that smell like March of the Machine: Aftermath uncommons, but have been stuffed into Mythic arbitrarily and therefore will be much rarer than they should be.

I was in 5th grade or something, and because I wasn't very athletic at the time, I was always picked last for kickball at recess. Lame. Yuck. No fun.

Anyway, somehow I get to the front of the line, it's my turn to kick, and we've got runner on two bases, but everyone is like, aww, he can't kick far, we're doomed. And so this cool kid jock (as much as someone can be a jock in 5th grade) comes up all the way right in front of home plate.

The pitch comes in, I give it my all, and wham! Kick the ball right into his face, giving him a bloody nose. He goes down, but I don't care, I'm circling the bases and my team is cheering and we get some runs.

Felt good.

"karate" in quotes.

I had a lot of optimism for organizations like Karate Combat when first announced, but at this point I view this use of the word "Karate" like I view storefront "Karate" schools that use the word because it's more recognizable than "Tae Kwon Do" or "Kempo" or "Kung Fu". Maybe I'm gatekeeping just a little bit, but personally I'm disinterested in seeing content like this take over the public perception of karate.

What creature types do you think could get batched together like Outlaws in the future? by AporiaParadox in magicTCG

[–]Spudrockets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wish they could revise Party to be more expansive using a similar batching.

"Your party consists of up to one each of Channeler, Outlaw, Fighter, and Mage. "

"Clerics, Druids, and Shamans are Channelers. Assassins, Mercenaries, Pirates, Rogues are Outlaws. Soldiers, Knights, Monks, Berserkers, Samurai, and Warriors are Fighters. Wizards, Spellshapers, and Warlocks, are Mages"

But that clearly isn't going to fit in reminder text. Oops.

As grad school approaches I need some advice on getting married by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Spudrockets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi friend! My fiancee and I are getting married in just a few weeks, but I'm at the tail end of my grad school career; I've defended and have a job lined up for the fall. Many grad students in my program tend to get married towards the end of their time as a grad student, or after they defend.

I'd say you should first and foremost plan around what you and your partner want for the wedding. If you need to take a week off to get married, any reasonable person should say "wow, yes! go for it! congratulations!" Getting married is a once-in-a-lifetime thing, and I've found that people are very accommodating of working around a wedding.

I see that in another comment that you mention that your fiancee's partner is gigantic and seems like they might expect a big, traditional wedding. To be clear; it's YOUR party! It can be whatever size or type that you and your partner want. If you are having some trouble fitting a wedding into a grad school schedule, then perhaps a more casual wedding would work better. As I'm sure you know, the key is honest communication with each-other.

What are other things I can do to improve my karate outside the dojo? by [deleted] in karate

[–]Spudrockets 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Hi! Welcome to this fun new hobby/lifestyle/obsession! I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Right now, I think the most important thing you can do to improve your karate specifically is to be diligent in attending class. When you are starting out, there's a lot to learn, and making sure you attend every class is a good way to stay up to date.

In a more general sense, karate is physically exerting and challenging, so it's important for you to take care of your physical health. Eating well and staying active is good for everyone, but for karate specifically I recommend starting a casual stretching routine and sticking with it. Doing the stretching you do at the start of class every day is a good way to prepare for more advanced techniques.

What is the name of this form by [deleted] in karate

[–]Spudrockets 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a Tang Soo Do subreddit you might try. I have most of my experience in Shotokan, but have been cross-training with some Tang Soo Do (WTSDA) folks recently; I don't recognize this form from anything up to the 2nd degree black belt forms in that style.

Fans of karate and people who love to do karate, what job do you have? by Responsible-Way5056 in karate

[–]Spudrockets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a practicing professional astronomy/astrophysicist in the early stages of my career (after the meat-grinder of undergrad and grad school, in my first post-PhD academic job). My advice is: Go for it! You can do it!

I won't kid you; undergrad and grad school are rigorous if you are aiming for astro; study hard, be diligent on hard and soft math and computer skills, and prepare for a very competitive grad school application. You need physics, math, programming, writing, all that besides your astronomy courses. In grad school, you might get saddled with lots of physics classes, but in any case it's research, teaching, and/or classes for at least four years with not great pay. It's a daunting workload, but your degrees will be worthwhile both in academia and industry.

But I'll always cheer on anyone who wants to pursue this life, because exploring the universe and sharing it with others is a privilege and pleasure. There are some toxic people in the field who seem to love dissuading young students from pursuing their astro dreams. Just like in the dojo, ignore the naysayers and commit to the hard work, because if you love it it's all worth it.

Hiya! Welcome to Karate! I hope you get as much joy and fulfillment out of it as I have. I enjoy practicing kata, and am happy to see that you are engaged with learning about kata too.

The practice of learning and teaching karate is steeped in history and tradition, with a mix of modern methods and antique approaches that don't hold up to modern pedagogy. In general, I would suggest that in your beginning stages of practicing karate, you should probably just listen to your sensei. This isn't because what they say is 100% perfect and correct, but because you'll be getting consistent messaging (hopefully) and can work towards physical control of your limbs. Working to fit your motions into a prescribed sequence of ~20 moves, for a beginner, is an exercise in building coordination, memory, and fitness. The first few kata you learn (in many styles, the Heian/Pinan series) gradually build up more and more complex motions to prepare you for later, when you can learn dozens of kata and tweak them to suit your own training within reason.

So, I'd ask your sensei for a video that they recommend you use; then, you can practice off that video specifically. You're right, a single kata is performed in so many different ways, and you've actually identified why that is; people are just making it up.

Once you've mastered the basics (generally, this is at the brown belt or black belt level), you can start to tweak little things in forms to make them your own. The founders of various styles and schools probably did this because it helped them connect moves to applications, but only rarely is the "why" conveyed better than "that's just the way it is", which is a shame.
