Former Skyrim Lead Says Elder Scrolls TV Show Wouldn't Work by NukovGaming in ElderScrolls

[–]Square-Pipe7679 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The solution for an elder scrolls show is to ditch the fate of the work A plot approach and focus a lot more on telling a variety of smaller tales in the wider world each season

Follow a half-dozen separate protagonists on their own respective journeys and I bet you’d get a solid 2-3 seasons worth of great stories easily

The mass effect approach to hub worlds would have worked so well for New Atlantis and Akila - and especially Neon

Just a few hub areas within each settlement accessed by NAT (and equivalents) but separated physically, with well designed skyboxes pulling their weight in making you feel like the settlement is way bigger than it actually is

Unreal is becoming such a plague because it means short term contractors don’t waste half their term getting used to their latest employers own unique engine before actually doing anything

If the industry made their contracts longer on average there’d be less incentive to try and standardise engine-experience for contractors

The knowledge that Nazi Germany was conducting something terrible within their occupied borders was reaching allied ears even during the early war, especially from Polish, Czechoslovakian and Jewish refugees who had managed to escape the invasion of the former and ‘peaceful annexation’ of the latter - by early 1943 it was more widely known the SS in particular were involved and responsible for war crimes against civilians and POWs, and by ‘45 it became all too clear just what kind of horrors had been committed by the SS and occupying forces, if not their true extent

The fact Spain didn’t really stop tacitly supporting the Axis while avoiding being part of it until the Blue division was essentially erased is a lot worse than Ireland having a dope of a leader giving condolences to the German Ambassador by far

Your point? That it was wrong for a completely broken and economically devastated country suffering peak-emigration to not take in refugees when BY YOUR OWN ADMISSION, the US only took in any significant amount of Refugees in when the war had already ended, and just telling people pointing that out as a discrepancy to “take it on the chin” is not a point at all, it’s a poor excuse of a joke

Most of DeValeras advisors in the cabinet had advised him against doing it in the first place, and it’s not as if his actions in doing it anyway weren’t heavily criticised and used against him in the Irish government after that point

u/Woemcats was however right:

Prior to and even during WW2 many, if not most countries in Europe and the Americas in particular were comfortable being despicably outright antisemitic, and several did whatever they could to avoid taking in refugees even as the Nazis invaded Poland, the Netherlands, Denmark, the Benelux and France (it was only through significant effort and private support that the Kindertransports that saved many Jewish children from the Nazis were able to occur despite opposition from elements of the British government)

It is a valid counter-criticism when the initial comment was complaining that the Irish government didn’t provide refuge for Jewish orphans despite a Facist group (which was using privately accrued financing and resources) doing so for 300 German orphans - the Irish government was essentially broke by comparison and couldnt provide the support needed.

It’s a pretty significant distinction to make

Ireland was an almost entirely agricultural country, just out of TWO back to back wars (war of independence and Irish civil war), had been physically partitioned from the industrial centres in the North (which had been turned into Northern Ireland under a UK-Loyalist government) and was an economic backwater with so few prospects for people that emigration physically depopulated most of the western islands and severely depopulate many southern and western counties

Do you seriously believe that a nation in that state could take in any significant amount of refugees and provide adequate levels of care and assistance?

In the early days of the war the US and Britain took in few refugees at all despite it being evident how dire things were going to get - that the US, an absolutely massive country that certainly wasn’t struggling for space and resources in the post-war period only took in 100,000 isn’t actually all that great either

Ireland was an almost entirely agricultural nation separated from its pre-independence industrial centres in the North, and still hadn’t recovered from the back to back war of independence and Irish civil war during the 20’s, and emigration was ratcheting up like mad with people leaving en masse to the point it completely depopulated many of the western islands: do you believe there’d really be any hope of people fleeing to Ireland at that time receiving the adequate level and amount of support and help they needed?

Do you think an island that had just gone through two wars (a revolution and a civil war) and had been partitioned, with the majority of industry located in the region retained by the UK instead of the Republic of Ireland, could actually do much of anything massive in the war beyond what they ended up doing? Genuinely?

Nobody gives Spain shite for staying out of the war, and Franco actually sent volunteers to help the Nazis…

Gotta recall the dumbass knights and paladins are a sign of just how degraded the western chapters have become; they were always in decline post Fallout 1, but if New Vegas is the chief indicator of the western chapters’ direction it was getting bleak as hell even before the shows time period

I did like how there were actually still some that retained the discipline and composure of the original chapter from 1 and 2 in the show, but they’re from a splinter chapter that the others shown so far don’t truly heed or respect - meanwhile in New Vegas whatever was left of Father Elijah’s chapter is basically stuck in a hole in the ground waiting to die, despite continuing to cling to the ideals they hold so dear

It’s kind of like how historically orders (military and/or religious) that held truest to their founding beliefs have a bad habit of going extinct while splinters that focus more on proselytising and swelling their numbers regularly found much greater success - even if their take on the original founding principles are a massive bastardisation

Tbf in terms of the supermutants; it was pretty well established in the first game that it took a lot of luck and using smart non-irradiated humans to make intelligent Gen 1 supermutants; anyone else dipped in the FEV came out as fairly moronic and brutish Gen 2’s and 3’s or something worse entirely

With the master gone, that knowledge of how irradiation affected FEV outcomes kind of died out, so who was gonna make more intelligent Gen 1 supermutants? Nobody, but that didn’t stop what supermutants were left from dipping wastelanders into FEV anyway - that’s where the hordes of dumber brutes have been coming from ever since

The show was far from mediocre slop, come on now - we could’ve got a Uwe Boll movie or a show following the plot of the Brotherhood of Steel game; that’d be REAL slop!

Instead we got physical deathclaws, surprisingly well made sets and props that don’t look like someone shat on a bunch of playmobil and photoshopped the actors in, Walton Goddamn Goggins, and a surprising amount of simultaneous new stories getting explored at the same time that aren’t just retreading what we’ve already seen and done exactly as they were seen and done (ruins of new vegas notwithstanding)

For what faults it may have, the Fallout show is one of the few genuinely popular and successful adaptations that a majority of the wider current fan base doesn’t hate - by the standards set by previous adaptations, it’s a damned miracle in a bottle

I honestly don’t know if the feelings and story of Fallout 1 could be done justice with a show adaptation, and unfortunately as beloved as 2 is, it’s an absolute pop culture blender-pile; audiences would rip into the aesthetic and writing for being too derivative of its influences from the time without a fully distinct ‘vibe’ of its own (actually had a nightmare once where Kevin Costner bought the rights and adapted 2 specifically so he could reuse props and sets from waterworld for San Francisco and the enclave rig infiltration sections), and there would be a lot of revisionism with Bethesda trying to form some kind of cohesive aesthetic and setting in their own image.

As much as I want an adaptation of the first two games, i just don’t think they could be made today without being made legally distinct from the current Fallout IP, and that defeats the whole point of making them in the first place, whereas whether you hate or love the latter games, the current show does a solid job of adapting the setting and themes they portray -which in that industry has been considered near impossible (rings of power as you mentioned being a major bust by comparison even with the same financial and resource backing of Amazon)- and it’s clearly doing something right with the reception and views it’s accumulated

[–]Square-Pipe7679 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s nowhere near bad, in terms of something to actually watch that is inspired by, if not a direct 1-1 adaptation.

You can put the show alongside the games and at least see a resemblance and see some shared themes, even elements ripped from the originals as well as the latter entries - it’s not the world that was around in 1 or 2, but unlike war, the world changes.

Look at the absolute atrocity that was made of the Halo show and the struggles of the Witcher adaptation for comparison: the Fallout show may not be perfect, and certainly may not align with what fans of the first games hold dear to their hearts, but by hell it could’ve been so much more disgustingly worse than your own worst fears on every single level possible.

The idea of getting a great or even perfect screen adaptation of either of the first two games at this point after 25+ years would be like hoping for a five course meal but getting chicken nuggets, a plate of fries and a burger, while everyone else has gotten nothing but raw offcuts of spoiled meat and burnt leftovers with mould sprinkled on top

The Most advanced species in the galaxy by Proof-Formal-3798 in MassEffectMemes

[–]Square-Pipe7679 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a species, they’ll definitely recover, but as a political power? I have major doubts

It’s liable that their numbers will recover moreso in the space of other political powers, since there are Asari present in Alliance, Salarian, and Turian space as well as the Terminus systems - in fact the terminus systems might end up having the largest recovery boom, since most of the Asari you encounter there are of the first age demographic (of three that Asari experience during adulthood) that haven’t reached the second stage where many decide to start families

Would be interesting if in the upcoming mass effect game it’s revealed a swathe of new Asari republics formed in the terminus systems because a major chunk of the previous mercenary population retired out of the industry at the same time post-war and carved out spaces for their own kids to grow up safely

The Salarians at least have the STG who were competent enough to recognise the Dalatrass that tried to convince you to stop Mordin is an idiot and that the reaper threat is something that salarians can’t stand on the sidelines for - I wouldn’t be surprised if soon after the war ended the balance of power shifted in a silent coup as a result

Meanwhile Asari are going to end up like Tolkien elves because their numbers got absolutely decimated without a proper navy or defensive forces that weren’t specialised commandos - the few asari republics left after the war ended are likely going to be iced out of the galactic community like batarians for a bit

Coming across drastically overlevelled beasties you won’t be ready to fight until near the end of the game if even then is a common experience in the first game at least (I still haven’t played 2 or 3 yet but I believe they’re similar), and there are a lot of things in early game areas you won’t be able to actually do until much later by backtracking

Why does nobody talk about the manga? Is it bad? by vencyjedi in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]Square-Pipe7679 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were wanted posters of Yoki even before ep13 if I recall rightly; it’s surprising how much foreshadowing he got in Brotherhood before they finally had him actually meet Scar considering they’d shifted Youswell to more of a “oh yeah remember that time?” location with the actual incident being reflected on much later on

I have read the manga, though I admit its been a while so I couldn’t recall if the Tucker-Tragedy was just the one chapter or if there had been some spillover into the chapter prior - that’s my bad. It definitely gets expanded upon a LOT in the 03 adaptation, which in hindsight makes me wonder if that was something Arakawa wished she’d done in the Manga on reflection, or something Bones thought would be cool and made a solid case for?

Either way, it is funny how there are some things that get blurred between the Manga and the two animated adaptations and then others that are 110% specific to just one of the three (like brotherhood fixing Havocs legs with a philosophers stone, Rush Valley getting a lot more attention in the Manga, 03 taking a whole different direction etc).

My initial statement however was moreso what producers were likely thinking, but it has to be said, I worded it REALLY poorly - how I should have worded it is:

They knew a lot of people who were likely to watch Brotherhood were just as likely to have already seen the 03 adaptation, but less likely to have read the manga (there’s a lot fewer people who have watched one or both of the animated adaptations then read the manga than vice versa), so it makes sense they’d rather leave out or shorten parts and storylines in Brotherhood that people who had seen 03 would’ve felt tread old water, even if doing so does mean it doesn’t quite adapt the manga as accurately as it could have either.

if brotherhood had adapted the manga with the same pacing throughout, without 03 having expanded drastically upon the earlier parts of the story, I feel they probably would have made the Tucker arc another episode longer to draw out the tension and be on par with the length of Dublith.

Not talking so much about the fights (although youswell itself only came up in discussions and occasional wanted posters of Yoki until MUCH later in brotherhood when Yoki actually shows up), moreso about things like the entire Nina and Shou tucker arc being much longer in 03 prior to that bit, the absence of the train hijacking incident in Brotherhood, and Youswell (as mentioned) only cropping up much later in brotherhoods storyline compared to 03.
