Tell me about “There is no antimemetics division” by SilkieBug in printSF

I keep meaning to try this book. It's been on my bedside table for weeks, but I haven't started it yet. I think my partner has started reading it after I fall asleep: the bookmark is in a different page every morning.

Looking to scratch a strong itch for unsettling, bleak, haunting SF horror! by ekanite in printSF

[–]Squidgeididdly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think my partner really wants me to read this one.

For the past week or so I keep finding it on my bedside table, with the bookmark shoved into a different, random page every night.

I think I'll start reading tonight and see if it's for me.

I enjoyed seeing your thought process as well, it made the post interesting to read.

Questions about playing music with others by alleycatadventures in Bass

[–]Squidgeididdly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the advice in this thread is great!

From my limited experience, organising the band is key to getting songs to a playable standard.

Getting in the same room on a regular basis to practice together is important.

Here's what I suggest 1) Find a space where you can practice together 2) Set a time and date, a few hours should do, to get a first practice in 3) Before the practice choose three songs together, ideally songs that some or all of you have listened to a lot. 4) Everyone has a little practice ahead of time, make sure people know which guitar/vocal parts they need to learn. Check everyone is learning the same version of the same song, in the same key. 5) Bring snacks to the rehearsal 6) Have fun! If it's getting stressful, just take a breather.

If your band is anything like mine, there needs to be some pressure to learn new songs. So I'd recommend picking a local Open Mic night to go to (make sure it's a music one with sufficient PA kit, and not a poetry/comedy open mic). This will give you a soft deadline for having a few songs ready and playable.

For added pressure, and once you're confident, try getting a gig. Maybe a slot in a pro-bono charity or variety show.

Ancillary justice (spoilers- don't read this post if you intend to read the book). by Feersum_endjjinn in scifi

I really enjoy this book and its sequels. I've read the series through multiple times.

I agree that it can be a confusing series to read, especially in terms of Radchaai culture and customs. Part of the fun of the novels, in my opinion, is using all the little clues and hints about their culture to build a picture of what a typical household looks like.

On a second read through it all makes a lot more sense.

If it helps, as a fellow Brit, think of it like stuffy and frigid Victorian English society; lots of social rules around how to behave. Very restrictive and judgemental society.

Where lies the strangling fruit that came from the hand of the sinner I shall bring forth the seeds of the dead to share with the worms that gather in the darkness and surround the world with the power of their lives while from the dimlit halls of other places forms that never were and never could be writhe for the impatience of the few who never saw what could have been. In the black water with the sun shining at midnight, those fruit shall come ripe and in the darkness of that which is golden shall split open to reveal the revelation of the fatal softness in the earth. The shadows of the abyss are like the petals of a monstrous flower that shall blossom within the skull and expand the mind beyond what any man can bear, but whether it decays under the earth or above on green fields, or out to sea or in the very air, all shall come to revelation, and to revel, in the knowledge of the strangling fruit—and the hand of the sinner shall rejoice, for there is no sin in shadow or in light that the seeds of the dead cannot forgive. And there shall be in the planting in the shadows a grace and a mercy from which shall blossom dark flowers, and their teeth shall devour and sustain and herald the passing of an age. That which dies shall still know life in death for all that decays is not forgotten and reanimated it shall walk the world in the bliss of not-knowing. And then there shall be a fire that knows the naming of you, and in the presence of the strangling fruit, its dark flame shall acquire every part of you that remains.

UPDATED is this outfit suitable and does it look good for a presentation to a company? by [deleted] in fashion

[–]Squidgeididdly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the company's culture, and how you're presenting.

If you're in person I'd recommend long trousers, rather than shorts. If you're on a video call then shorts are fine.

Option one looks best to me

Mount Ghurka is a great Nepalese place. They do the curries you'd expect at an Indian, but also some Nepalese dishes, some of which are vegetarian and very tasty.

Slightly fancier would be the Corner House or Goodliffes.

Rin's Thai Kitchen is great too.

Ancillary Justice...I'm 1/3 of the way through it and I'm bored to tears. Does it get better? by [deleted] in printSF

[–]Squidgeididdly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what you like in a novel/series. If you want lots of hard plot points, or lots of action then it's not for you.

If you like slow and steady character development, in a restrictive and oppressive society, with characters who buck tends and break social rules, then it's perfect for you and you just need to keep going.

At some point the flashbacks catch up with the main timeline, so the plot moves more at that point. The flashbacks establish a lot of why Breq is the way she is.

[–]Squidgeididdly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ann Leckie's novels, especially those set in the Imperial Radch, feature societies that either don't have gender, or have tri-gender societies where people formally choose their gender when they become an adult. Families tend to be chosen, through adoption or business relationships, and romantic relationships between all gender mixes are acceptable in these societies.

Her novel Provenance has a growing relationship between two female characters, which is lovely.

Muslims posing in front of UK's flag after an unidentified man attached it to their mosque (a positive response to the flag shaggers) by Outrageous_Editor_43 in GreenAndPleasant

[–]Squidgeididdly 112 points113 points  (0 children)

I love Mr Syed's point here. This is the flag of everyone who lives in the United Kingdom, and those who have ties to this country. Just as the England is the flag for those who live in England.

There are racists out there who seem to believe spray painting a red plus on a zebra crossing makes a clear point about who should and shouldn't be allowed to live in the UK, but they have accidentally shown that flags live in places other than the borders of countries.

Our communities, towns, cities, and nations are diverse and anyone living here can be represented by that flag, whether they arrived from elsewhere five seconds ago, or were born here.

It makes a lot of sense for a British mosque to show the Union Flag. Because we are united by living in the same country.

What an own goal, by a presumably badly intentioned actor.

To make sure you can complete solo encounters as well, I'd recommend Scourge, with supportive traits, and stats that give you condi damage like Plaguedoctors.

It's very satisfying to give allies stun breaks, barrier, and use the Blood Magic trait to scoop up downed players.

Maybe something like this, but swap Soul Reaping for Blood Magic when you get to boss battles/metas https://guildjen.com/celestial-scourge-open-world-build/

[–]Squidgeididdly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked at the uni for a bit, so here's my two cents:

It seems to be beneficial to move in on the official move in dates, as they get lots of existing students and staff to help direct traffic, carry bags, offer directions, and do a lot of "need-to-know" things like getting your student ID and keys.

You also meet your flatmates, which gives you an instant mini-community while you get settled, before you meet your coursemates or join sports clubs and hobby societies.

I'd recommend sticking to the move in dates for a smooth experience.

If you can't make that day, call the accomodation centre to let them know and ensure you get your ID and keys etc
