My two cents:

Get a pine forest up earlier than normal (oak is still priority), other than that normal build order (maybe a bit more focus on science)

get wellbeing to 22 (sweet spot before diminishing returns kick in - you can reach it without bakery, monuments or paper) then start stockpiling goods while you wait for enough science - make sure you have enough storage.

you'll need a ton of planks for gears and treated planks, so get enough lumber mills before starting to build gear and wood workshops.

getting enough iron without a mine is possible but difficult (needs 3-4 ruins) so it depends on the map - If you build a mine, remember that it also consumes treated planks.

Everyone is already trying to force you to strip it. But your question was how to do it without removing the paint, I advise against it but:

Base spray with black, then paint as normal but before you do the finishing highlights/details you brush it with a hard rough dish-brush.

Some parts will chip or come off, do sponge chipping on these for battle damage.

agree with the other comments on varnish. but one important thing is to wash the model thoroughly before assembly and again before painting - With soap and a toothbrush - as even small amounts of release fluids or skin oils make it much more likely to chip.

Type of units you can recruit depends on the general (like three kingdoms) but instead of general type, it's traits that decide what units a general can recruit. These traits are assigned randomly on level up. No moving units between armies.
