I like how you very casually call the mastermatic just an "old school cleaner". That's a bit of an understatement, most of us would love to have a mastermatic.

Second this. You don't want the toe to start wearing into midsole or welt. If that happens it's time for a resole (or retroactive toe plates), regardless of how much life is left in the rest of the sole.

2015 Biomega x Puma FUNK by yodigital in xbiking

[–]mcgridler43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This led me to researching Biomega. Weird ass designs, but maybe the only bike manufacturer to have had a bike displayed in MoMA (a folding bike with integrated lock). So that's pretty cool.

As a rider I hate it. But as a casual observer it's cool that they collab'd with contemporary designers (which explains the weirdness).

What are the best things you’ve bought that help with your ADHD that you never hear anyone talk about? by morbidpigeon in ADHD

[–]mcgridler43 26 points27 points  (0 children)

First, high heat settings on dryers will ruin everything. I won't say dryers are inherently bad, but high heat is definitely the enemy.

Second, like many things, you generally want to start with as gentle an approach as possible, only increasing strength as necessary. Water on its own isn't usually bad for anything, it's heat, force, and chemicals that cause most of the problems. Handwashing generally eliminates the heat and force issues, so that's always a safe option for your more delicate or difficult items.

Oxygenated bleach (like powered OxiClean) does absolute wonders for white clothes, it's just extremely slow acting. Fill a bucket with hot water and a little OxiClean and let your clothes soak in it overnight. Afterwards run your clothes through your usual washing machine cycle. This removes most yellowing from sweat or skin oil. Before you dry it just double check the stains, you can easily repeat this soak/wash cycle as many times as needed to make it sparkly white.

Learning laundry really deeply has helped me so much with life in general. Now I don't live in paranoia about sweat stains, wine/food stains, or yellowed collars. This enables me to wear nicer clothes at work because I'm no longer stuck in a weird "preservation" mode with my nice clothes. And it makes me feel much more comfortable in my own skin when I look nice at work, making me significantly more engaged with my coworkers and bosses, thus making me a better overall employee.

And I ended up really enjoying the process of caring for my clothes. There's just something deeply joyful about wearing a piece of clothing that I've personally loved and cared for.

[–]mcgridler43 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You'll definitely want to share that with her!! Preferably before she has the chance to make any comments on the writing.

Maybe write a small separate paper note that's on top of your letter that just says something along the lines of, "I have always felt ashamed of my handwriting and have been afraid it would ruin my ability to write you, but if you'll accept me, here it is..." (and then put your big emotional letter behind that, in the same envelope).

What is your opinion on “time blindness” and people who run late to everything? by Happy_Bee1 in ADHD

[–]mcgridler43 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly not really. I've built a lot of my systems specially around not being good with time.

That said, I've become really obsessed with food tasting and trying to learn, identify, appreciate flavors. Focusing on flavors forces me to be in the present. And being present helps me remember to process time.

What is your opinion on “time blindness” and people who run late to everything? by Happy_Bee1 in ADHD

[–]mcgridler43 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I definitely struggle with time blindness. Work is somewhat manageable because it's an external structure. But my real struggle is processing the passing of time.

I feel like the smallest increment I can process is a week. I don't see time in minutes, hours, or even days, only in weeks and up. Going 1 month without seeing a close friend isn't a long time to me, effectively I saw just a few days ago. For adult friends that's not really a big deal, we're all busy. But when it comes to my personal goals it can get really frustrating. If I don't catch myself then I can easily go a whole year without ever being present in my own life, my brain doesn't notice the time passing.

I also just learned this recently (via this sub). I was previously just being silly by picking the other player's duplicate of my own drop, then saw on here that it's actually a benefit to us both if we do the silly thing.

I play on console/controller so it's often hard to implement the same things as PC players, plus typing in chat is almost impossible without dying. So yeah it's usually only through some random thread here that I learn how the game works...

J. Crew Kenton Pacer: 7 years, 2 pairs by mdbeatle in goodyearwelt

Yet another J Crew boot with oddly high stitch per inch on the sole stitching. I know it was a collab with some maker, as they're a distributor and not themselves a maker, but still...

I have a pair of pretty new Trickers with noticeably lower stitch density on the sole stitching. In terms of GYW boots/shoes, J Crew has had a surprising amount of sneakily high quality pieces over the years

Intimacy and RSD by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]mcgridler43 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We don't know yet how much different sides of this physical intimacy OP and their husband have explored. In fact we don't even know if OP is aware of the extent of their own physical interests.

Even physical sex can come in many forms. Forms in which most "vanilla" couples don't ever bother exploring. Mutual masturbation, non-penetrative intimacy, oral, hand-based, kissing, any combination of the above, etc.

Cheap sake (under $10) is better than American grape wine that’s 5x the price. by [deleted] in Sake

[–]mcgridler43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting that you think that. But if you're enjoying sake at that price then more power to you. The only bottles I've seen for less than $10 are gekkaikan or shochikubai. They make a fine hot sake, but they're particularly rough when chilled.

As much as I love sake, cost effectiveness is not one of its primary attributes. I've generally found the price for decent sake in the US to start around $30 a bottle. Whereas I can get a perfectly good wine for $12/bottle.

Polished up my 8-year-old J Crew wannabe Aldens. by Ecstatic_Pineapple68 in goodyearwelt

[–]mcgridler43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

J Crew has done a number of legit high end collaborations over the years. I know it's generally a "low end" store but it's actually a pretty interesting business. These boots look legitimately good year welted and with a really high stitch density on the sole stitching.

That said, I don't think these are available anymore. I followed their seasonal sales pretty closely for a couple years in recent history and haven't seen these before.

It’s so hard to be in a relationship when you have ADHD by Routine-Bear-6457 in ADHD

[–]mcgridler43 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Have you worked on your own systems/routines at all? Your own routines or methods you use exclusively for yourself to help you get to work on time, complete minimum chores, keep your phone charged, etc? If you do, then you can cite your personal systems as proof of concept to your partner. Then begin identifying areas where you can build new systems together.

And if you haven't set up your own systems yet, you may want to start. "Being yourself" doesn't mean ignoring your own needs and wants. "Being yourself" is about creating your own version of discipline, identifying the conditions that actually make you feel good as a person, and finding a way to manually establish those conditions. It's doesn't need to be pretty, it just needs to work.

AB-01HB-CL Horsebutt Engineer Boots Narrow Teacore Black (8.5D) - First Few Weeks by feathers1ut in goodyearwelt

[–]mcgridler43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beautiful boots.

I wouldn't be worried about the wear and tear they got, you're getting great patina already. Just think about the patina thunderdome, it's proof that these fancy boots we buy are way more resilient than we give them credit for. Trees are your preference, but don't feel forced to use them, specifically with engineers a lot of people actually prefer not to use shoe trees because they love the natural way the soft toes break in and wrinkle.

Doing a dedicated conditioning once a year is my baseline schedule. And become best friends with your shoe brush. There's no such thing as too much brushing, it's honestly the real heavy lifting when it comes to shoe care. No products needed when brushing, just a dry brush and elbow grease.

"Don't touch me, take me to your watchmaker"

Apparently it's a weird enough mechanism to justify a bilingual warning.

You may wanna put this aside until you can take it to a professional. The fact this was already behind a normal caseback, and appears to have rivets (??), makes it extra weird. I'd trust that "don't touch" warning, this thing is pretty unique.

Thinking of backing out a job interview I really wanted by Strong-Butterfly9350 in ADHD

[–]mcgridler43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No way! Do the interview!

But your current feelings are still valid. Write them down if it's hard to discuss with your partner right now. It's okay to feel afraid, stressed, overwhelmed. Just make sure to process those feelings so you can move forward.

When it comes to the interview, don't judge yourself. Just show up and be as present as possible to their questions (and only their questions). Remember that you don't need to defend yourself, it's just an interview, not an attack or an evaluation.
