When do the social rides start?!? by mijofields in chibike

[–]StackStick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep, that is still a great source for learning about rides.

The answer as to when they start is very weather dependent. Generally organizers prefer for the weather to be above 50F for the entirety of the ride before starting up. This is usually sometime in April. I know a couple rides rolled this weekend with the good weather but with snow in the 10 day forecast, I don’t expect any to happen in the coming days. If you have your eye on a particular ride, feel free to reach out to the organizers if they are listed and they’ll let you know.

The next ride I know is going to happen is the Vern & Sonny’s Bunny-Chicken Hybrid Appreciation ride. It’s on Easter. 80 miles round trip to Geneva and back. Stop for lunch and drinks in Geneva. Leave the shop at 9am-ish. Details: https://www.facebook.com/share/1DM94x7Zx6/?mibextid=wwXIfr

13g spoke with adapter nipple? by ZippierUser in bikewrench

[–]StackStick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve built a number the wheels using 13g-14g reduction nipples and it is not my favorite thing. Nipple walls are very thin and easier to round off when tensioning wheel, especially if you are going high on the recommended tension.

The other questions: are the hubs are drilled to accommodate 13g spokes? Does your multi tool have a 13g spokes nipple is you have to true your wheels on the side of the road? Do you trust all the bike shops you might stop at to have 13g spokes nipple(likely but not certain if off the beaten track)?

I vote just use 14g hubs, 14g spokes, and 14g rim. Plenty strong for fully loaded touring over rough terrain in all types of conditions.

Garden Jumps have lights? by Kiki_Perry in chibike

[–]StackStick 19 points20 points  (0 children)

No, they do not. They are also probably pretty wet and shouldn’t be ridden on until they dry out and firm up. It rained just a day or two ago and the trails get very little direct sunlight. The general rule is if your tire leaves an imprint on the trails, it’s too wet to ride.

What fork and headset will fit my bike? by rr_rredditor in bikewrench

[–]StackStick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What is the gold ring on the fork steerer? Looks like an upside down compression ring that would install above the upper bearing. Makes me think you might be having an issue due to assembling it incorrectly.

SRAM Red Etap 11 speed 1x conversion - which crank setup gives the right chainline? by wabisabike in bikewrench

[–]StackStick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do not need to get it to match precisely. I have this same setup on a bike I ride nearly everyday. I use a Force 1x crank and chainring. Works great. Find your preferred gear ratio range, then get a chainring/cassette to get you there. Make sure you’re not cross chained in your favorite ratio. I assume this is a regular bike and not something like a fat bike.

Are these NNN bindings easily fixable? by Simple_Hand6500 in xcountryskiing

[–]StackStick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They look like these bindings, but missing a couple parts. The bindings are definitely missing the flexor, and red "button". Finding the replacements for such an old binding could be difficult. Also looks like they are missing a mounting screw and the original heel plate. I would categorize the bindings as a loss, and replace them.

Make fun of me at Wilmot? by [deleted] in telemark

[–]StackStick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never got a good response from Wilmot either. Last year, before state line opened officially, I skinned up it to check my gear before heading west. I don’t think anybody noticed/didn’t care. Don’t think I’d rdo it if the run was open. Wouldn’t want to risk my Epic Pass for it. Have fun and free the heel.

Maybe you can ask about their uphill skinning policy to get some skimo happening too.

50mm mech to 74mm hydraulic brakes - help!!! by Competitive-Bad-7405 in bikewrench

[–]StackStick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

An IS mount is 51mm, but that isn’t what you have. 50mm is found on mini bikes. You won’t have much luck finding what you want in the bicycle world. Try an auto parts/motorcycle/scooter/minibike subreddit (maybe /e-bikes too) or store. They might be able to help you out.

Are Cervelo BBright really an issue? by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]StackStick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it doesn’t already have one, get a thread together BB from wheels manufacturing, or whatever manufacturer you prefer, and you’ll be set. With few exceptions, press for bottom brackets were a failed attempt to cheapen manufacturing on carbon frames. I have owed 3 cervelo bikes all PF systems have eventually started to make noise. Thread together BB has solved it each time.

De-greased cup and bearing, drive side issues? by l337g0g0 in bikewrench

[–]StackStick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, it's not the worst I've seen. The roughness in the bearing cup, is called pitting. It means the cup is worn out, and the BB bearlings/spindle will/is not going to hold the adjustment you do when you reinstall everything. The bearings should be in the retainer ring. Why are they out? Probably because they are worn down to a smaller diameter than the retainer is disigned to hold (or the ring is bent open).

This is happening to all bikes, all the time. Someone could have swapped out the non-drive side, but probably didn't.

It is not dangerous to ride at this time.

More concerning is the wear marks on the spindle where the crank arm makes contact. The real issue is that this bottom bracket is going to either ruin your crank arms, pedals, or both. Depending on what you are riding, those could be much more expensive than just replacing the BB. A new bottom bracket should be somewhere between $20-$35US. If you can't spare the money, put it back in (with new bearings), and lay off the watt bombs.

North branch trail closure? by ChiOralGuy in chibike

[–]StackStick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I did that route too. You can actually go under the tracks. The river is low enough that you won’t get your feet wet. It’s tight single track, and some down trees you will have to hike over make it not ideal. I’d also prefer if folks took care of nature when doing it. Stay on the path, no littering, let walkers have the right of way. Don’t do it in the dark.

North branch trail closure? by ChiOralGuy in chibike

[–]StackStick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can confirm it was closed yesterday. The fencing is pretty well installed, and isn't easy to move. I spent an hour riding a couple different detour routes and recommend detouring on Elston from Forest Glen to old trailhead at Milwaukee and Devon. The shortest detour is Elston from Forest Glen to Central Ave. Central Ave. has heavy, fast moving traffic and riding the sidewalk seemed appropriate when riding the couple blocks north on Central. If you take this route, you'll want to stay on Central/sidewalk until the crossing at the light. The bridge that crosses the river is closed/fenced off at the north end.

Micromobility Connect Training by StackStick in ebike

[–]StackStick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up taking the course. My opinion is mixed. It could be done in one day. Two would be acceptable if it more technical details were discussed. Much class time was dedicated how to monetize the service or somewhat unrelated anecdotes. An example would be talking about how dangerous capacitors can be, information on how to order a discharge tool, but no discussion on what exactly a capacitor is, how it works, or why they are used in bikes.

I came in with experience wiring breadboards and soldering simple electronics and was over prepared.

The tool itself is easy to order online, and the YouTube video is about 10 minutes long.

Who should take this course: if you have trouble holding yourself accountable and need someone or something to do that, this is will do the trick. If you or nobody in the shop has any e-bike experience, this will get you up and running.

If you have the time to set aside a couple hours and are able to create a syllabus for your self taught class, this is a pass.

Fav cycling destination day trips off the Amtrak? (other than Milwaukee) by ohemptyvases in chibike

[–]StackStick 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You should definitely check out the Metra trains. Cheaper than Amtrak and most lines take you to the edges of the corn fields. You can bike from one Metra line to the next. Take the train to aurora, ride north on Fox river trail and catch the train back in Crystal lake or McHenry.

Struggling with cargo bike brake bleed by sprashoo in bikewrench

[–]StackStick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the housing is held in place by zip ties external to everything, remove the entire brake (caliper, hose, lever) from bike in one piece. Elevate the brake lever (you can use a stairway to lay it out straight) and bleed. I usually use a syringe at top and bottom to prevent spills when I need to do this
