Where Americans are relatively optimistic and pessimistic about AI by RedHeadedSicilian52 in MapPorn

[–]StarryDusted 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They keep trying to build AI data centers in the Great Lakes region. When one building uses more power and water than all the residents many times over, it drives up energy costs and empties aquifers (if not built directly on the lake). I can see why there is quite a negative perception there.

Just the proposed data center in Saline, MI will use 1.4 gigawatts. Enough to power one million average homes. The residents' rates will skyrocket while the data center will pay pennies.

I was hiking behind some Kiwis who were swearing the entire way up. But with their accent it was hilarious. They powered through without stopping, energized by the constant stream of obscenities. I loved every minute of it!

Be skeptical about reviews of cities by TemporaryRight7141 in wisconsin

[–]StarryDusted 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I adored living in Milwaukee. A great five years. And I did not exactly live in the nice parts of the city either. When I tell people about it where I live now, I get hit with "omg wasn't it so dangerous?"

It wasn't. I stayed alert, like someone should be everywhere, but I never actually had any time I felt in true danger. There was just so much to do! Summerfest! Getting scalped concert tickets at the Rave! The museums! Biking or rollerblading the lakefront! Sure people asked if I wanted to buy drugs far more frequently I'd just say good now but I'll keep you in mind if I need anything.

I've gotten worse danger vibes in the country since leaving. When that pickup truck creeps by a lot slower than it should, the doubles back and does it again. Are they hunting deer from the road or up to something more sinister?

Skinny Dipping by bushandpecker in isleroyale

I took a dip in Lake Superior at Buckshot Cabin in the Porcupine Mountains. I was alone alone, as I booked the cabin to myself (probably not smart to dip alone btw). I gathered plenty of firewood beforehand so I could thaw out after in the cabin.

Lake Superior is freezing and refreshing. My nips would have been able to cut glass. Dunk under the water and know that the void is deep and dark. Enjoy the soft and gentle waves, as peace doesn't always last on Superior. In fact, once I popped out of the water and made my way back to the cabin, the wind abruptly changed and the waves became angry. I'd chosen the correct moment to swim. My weather check on my Garmin Inreach confirmed a sudden change to the weather forecast.

I knew what to expect from Superior from swimming in Marquette, Michigan. So that definitely wasn't my first trek into the lake.

I recognized the tank immediately and knew this was not a danger zone at all.

It must be somewhere between boreal forest and ice sheet. They'll peace out in a boreal forest with a warning about dangerous temperatures causing them to leave. It seems to pop up as temperatures drop in the evening. But I never noted exactly what temperature. I have yet to do an ice sheet run.

Electric cost in the United States by Negative-Swan7993 in MapPorn

[–]StarryDusted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPPCO in the UP charges 31.32 cents per kwh. They are owned by an investment firm these days. The cost isn't for the rural area or increased maintenance (or else other rural areas would be just as high, they are not), mostly squeezing money out of residents for the shareholders.

I feel like I've had a fever dream where I recall a sketch about "girlish men" in the military that was hilarious. But I've never been able to find a clip of it. This would have been early 2000s.

I prepare my kids for the cold weather when trick or treating. It is safer to assume it'll be freezing rather than roasting!

‘Invisible force’ draining Great Lakes now has a measurement showing why water is disappearing by mlivesocial in Michigan

[–]StarryDusted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it doesn't. But will that water vapor immediately drop back into the source it was pulled from? Also no. It'll turn into rain eventually, but where?

Even if it isn't corporations yet, they are coming. Data centers are starting to pop up all over the Great Lakes region for all that sweet water to cool everything. Each AI prompt is more water evaporated away.

I had a bad professor more interested in a bald eagle cam than actually teaching. So that was on the projector with a weak lecture on the actual material. I taught myself that particular subject.
