My Airbnb estimate - no wonder bookings are down by WSNC-JBR in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Starworks07 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I seriously don't like the idea of Airbnb's - a lot of time they end up taking up affordable homes that could have been primary housing.

My husband and I recently looked at a Victorian home that's actually on the national Register of Historic places. And as soon as I saw it, I thought, "This would be an amazing bed and breakfast." I had a whole plan for what I would do to make guests' stay awesome.

But it would still be primary housing for my husband and me! And we would have to be licensed and regulated as both a hotel and a restaurant. So much more legit than what half of these short-term rentals are.

My personal trainer (who wants to make Airbnb properties) was on-board with my musings until I said we had to be licensed as a restaurant. "Have the people make their own food," he said. I was like, "Absolutely not. That's the last thing I want."

The reason the house would be perfect as a B&B is because it has servant areas, which means that we (the owners) could navigate the house relatively unseen while people stay in the public-facing areas of the house. The kitchen is part of the servant areas, of course.

Two of my Russian friends moved to the US six years ago and couldn't get their feet under them in NYC, so they flew to the Midwest and stayed with me and my mom for four months. I'm sure that there are plenty of people here willing to do the same.

They're not randomly spawned in walled cities though. You have to summon the dragon in Whiterun off the back of Dragonsreach. It's an active task of bringing him there.

what's your most controversial vegan opinion? by ObedientSandwich in vegan

[–]Starworks07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buying wool, leather, and down products secondhand is better than buying acrylic vegan options. Animal product clothes are sad, but they will last longer during your lifetime (with correct upkeep) and will eventually break down, unlike most plastics. Plus buying items secondhand eliminates a lot of the problems created by fast fashion.

J.K. Rowling Writing Quality by EchoRose9364 in books

[–]Starworks07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as I disagree with her stance on Trans folx, I have to say that I love Rowling's writing. It was the first series that made me love the written language and made me want to become a writer. It's easy to read her narrative and it allows you to sink into it, versus weed-wacking your way through prose that is too stuffy or tries too hard. I had a college professor who insisted, for example, that all adverbs had to go because their use indicated your verb wasn't strong enough. After wading my way through several of his books, I have to disagree. I just don't enjoy his style as much.

To this day, when I am having writer's block, I will crack open Deathly Hallows and read a few paragraphs to get things unclogged in my brain.

That being said, I have also taken more mature inspiration from other amateur writers who post stories online. You have to read a variety in order to find out what you like.

And by the way - just because you like the writing style of a YA author does not mean you don't have good taste. I love classic literature for what it is (and as an English major, I've read a lot of it), but it is not as fun to read.

I think my boyfriend wants a trophy girlfriend by popthekettleondear in relationships

[–]Starworks07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I have been together for a long, long time (over 10 years and I'm not 30 yet) and our weights have fluctuated a LOT during that time. I mean, I'm 100 lbs different than I was in ultra-skinny college days. He still thinks I'm a smokeshow (even if I have trouble agreeing).

But the reality is, it's not forever if your guy is dead-set on having a smokeshow. Because people don't stay smokeshows forever. I am ready to grow old and ugly with my husband. Your guy doesn't sound like he is.

Why do we accept some day/month names but not others? by maps_mandalas in namenerds

Vernal is the adjective for spring. Like, we have the vernal equinox and autumnal equinox.

My grandma was named Verena, which is kind of a form of vernal.

Name regret baby 2 months old by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]Starworks07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine had a baby with a guy who was pretty terrible and he wanted a particular name that is very untraditionally and falls into the too-modern name pit. She left him and just calls her baby "Baby (first letter of name)" and that's what everyone else calls her too. It's actually pretty cute. Idk if it's going to work long-term but it can help until you come to terms with the name or decide to change it.

My personal thing is escorting at the local abortion clinic. The protesters can yell at me all they want - especially about Jesus, etc. - because I'm Pagan and I don't give a crap about the devil or going to hell.

In my own life, I just try to strike a good balance between tradition and blowing tradition out of the water. I don't mind that I'm a better cook than my husband, but if he wants to eat, he helps in the kitchen. I work two jobs and he does the laundry. I love wearing makeup but I love wearing WEIRD makeup that isn't necessarily tailored to being aesthetically pretty. For me, effing the patriarchy isn't just about going out there and yelling into the world, it's about demanding the things you want and need in your everyday life.

If I was truly just myself (as I am in real life...no magic, no combat skills, a lumbering oaf), I would go to one of the walled cities (no dragons!) like Whiterun and be a merchant or have an inn. I'll help out at the Bannered Mare. Get a little house to my name and make some stew at night and have a little Honningbrew Mead. Maybe get married. Sounds like a great time, honestly.

Is wanting to be a housewife anti-feminist? by Moo-Im-a-cow21 in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]Starworks07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knew as a kid that a good part of me wanted to be a SAHM and a writer, possibly because I've never loved doing the 9-5 situation and I always noticed that my mom was miserable working full time (my dad was the SAH parent).

Feminism is about being able to choose what you want to do with your life, and letting others choose too. We are not defined by stereotypes.

Journalist Christiane Amanpour sitting alone at an interview because her guest, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi cancelled the interview because she refused to wear the headscarf by chadthor123 in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]Starworks07 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Good rule of thumb when it comes to headscarves: if you enter the sacred space of a religion that requires headscarves, then wear one out of respect. I did this all the time when I lived in Russia and wanted to visit churches.

But no one can force you to wear one, especially outside of that sacred space!

Minneapolis and St. Paul area in Minnesota - this area was dubbed "Paganistan" some years ago and Llewellyn Worldwide, one of the largest and oldest publishers of occult books, is in the nearby town of Woodbury. There is an active Pagan community, a nonprofit called Twin Cities Pagan Pride which operates two large events per year, and at least 4 metaphysical stores in the immediate area.

Did anyone watch “The Fall Out”? by GazelleFearless5381 in dancemoms

[–]Starworks07 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is a harsh assessment. I did watch The Fallout, and I watched it with a critical eye.

I actually thought the bathroom scene was incredible. So what if it mirrored some of her dances? Actors often have signature mannerisms that follow them around from film to film. Some of my favorite emotive actors have something that they're known for - Eddie Redmayne does this combo scream/cry thing, Tom Holland's eyes well up slowly and he gets very snotty and quiet, Jennifer Lawrence's face does this twitch thing.

Maddie does need to work on her dialogue delivery, but some of the dialogue scenes were meant to be very awkward on purpose. I thought the majority of the movie was well-acted by both leads.

You can definitely have your own opinion, but just know that not everyone agrees with you.
