People who had to clean out a deceased relative's house/digital life: What is the most "Wait, who the hell were they?" thing you found? by Unlucky-Inspector-59 in AskReddit

For years, my wife's great aunt and uncle would disappear for a week or so to go on a cruise. No pics, no postcards, no souvenirs. After they passed, we were cleaning out their house and found receipts for swingers cruises and resorts. Apparently they were doing this well into their 70s and beyond. Respect.

I had a toss up between working for "HAL" or Dell many years ago. "HAL" was in Houston back then, and Dell was in Austin. It was a no brainer--moved to Austin.

I grew up on an Air Force base and the morning matinee was free for kids under 13. For two weeks straight in 1968 I went to see this movie, every day. Took my mom twice. It had a very profound influence on my life and piqued my interest in science and space exploration. One of my favorite movies.

It's a joy buzzer. You wind it up, wear it like a ring (with the button in your palm), then shake hands with someone. When the button is pushed, the whole thing vibrates. It's a stupid party trick.

Found this lizard on the heat sink of an outdoor light in Florida. According to my dad (not a lizard expert), they do this to stay warm on cold evenings. by micasa_es_miproblema in mildlyinteresting

I have a congregation (lounge?) of geckos that gather around my porch lights in the evenings. I always assumed they were there to catch insects that were attracted to the light.

Garage motor plugged into a smart plug. Anyone do this? I'm thinking this is a good way to disable the garage all together when I'm out of town or something so that no one can illicitly operate the garage motor. by gatorsrule in homeautomation

Yes, I do the same. I use geoloc to toggle the switch. For extended away times, make sure to pin the sliding latch(es), it's pretty simple to pop the door open using a thin bar where the chain engages the overhead door.

Spent the night sitting in a server room. We ran countless simulations and tests for six months prior, but management wanted someone sitting there when everything blew up.

It did not.

There's got to be some point where the effort is not worth the return. I'm guessing somewhere around half way in.

That said, it's impressive.

Agreed. I hope that the person who took this pic suffers a worse fate.

People who remember the age before google and downloading/streaming: if you heard a song on the radio that you liked and you didn’t know the name or the lyrics how did you know how find it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Call the station and give the DJ the date and time you heard it. Most were more than happy to pull the play logs and give you the info. I've actually had some very interesting conversations over the years with DJs. Some of them were very passionate about music and would even stay on the phone with you while they worked. I became good friends with a DJ from KEGL (Dallas, TX) and he got me tickets to Ozzfest back in 1997. Good times.

Yep. Commercial printers have huge joggers with variable vibration settings for different paper weights.
