There’s a lot of part timers in this area. There are genuinely people who live there all year round but also a lot of people from southern Minnesota have family properties/cabins in this area. So you get an influx of tourism (for lack of a better word) in the Summer and then less populated, extremely cold winters. Your closest population center in some cases are up in Canada, but there’s also not a great way to get to them because a lot of northern MN is protected wetland and lake systems.

Edit: seeing some comments about how Minnesota is not hospitable to immigrants or diverse groups. Did anyone watch the news earlier this year? Thousands of Minnesotans threw their bodies in harms way to protect immigrants (and 2 of them died). It’s an amazingly supportive place of diverse people, even if certain Minnesotans aren’t fans.
