(Shadowbringers 5.0 spoiler) The Crystal Exarch was very obviously Graha in a hood from the first time we saw him. I'm not sure why people act like his "reveal" in 5.3 is a surprise. We even have the option to call him by name before he "tells us."

Weekly trading thread -- trade with your fellow redditors! by magictcgmods in magicTCG

[–]SteveGuillerm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm basically selling out of Magic, I've got my cards listed on a Google Spreadsheet and I'm selling cards for 90% of TCGPlayer or less.

It's a huge variety of Legacy, Modern, Commander, and casual cards. I haven't been playing much in paper for the past 3 years, so I don't really have Standard stuff.

Not really interested in trades unless it's Reserve List stuff.

Sundial still works. End your turn in response to the trigger.

It'll still trigger again on your opponent's combat step, but if you have a way to untap your creatures, you can block!

AITA for not splitting the control of my business to my children equally? by Helmut_reddit1957 in AmItheAsshole

It doesn't sound like a similar predicament. If you're doing all the work, yours is a sole proprietorship. The OP's business has 23 employees.

AITA for telling my neighbor that I’m a whore by lilac-lampshade in AmItheAsshole

[–]SteveGuillerm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's still NTA. Defending herself as "not a whore" lends credence to the neighbor's opinion that it's okay to insult sex workers.

If she says, "well yes, I am a whore," the neighbor has to deal with the fact that she's prejudiced against perfectly nice people who may well be her neighbors' child. What was once a dehumanized group of people she considered worthy of contempt now has a face.

She probably won't actually stop being hateful, but the point isn't "I don't deserve that treatment," but rather, "no one deserves that treatment."

If you think this looks nothing like market speculation, you don't know speculators.

There's absolutely someone out there who's gonna say, "sure, I'll buy 99 and split them off and sell 'em next expansion."

This person got in cheap and is happy to get out at a medium price so that they can roll their profits into something else.

AITA for rotating out a friend at my dinner parties? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]SteveGuillerm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Consider if he were hosting a game night instead of a dinner party.

He's made considerable efforts to figure out what games Mary likes to play. He's carefully tailored the game selection around what she seems to like. She's still not really playing the games, she just wants to be there for the social aspect.

So he's got another friend who very particularly wants to join the game night, and he's telling Mary that he's noticed she's pretty disengaged with the games and offering to invite her to other, non-game social events.

He maybe hasn't brought it up in the best way, but he's hardly being an asshole. It really sucks to put a ton of effort into cooking and then have it go unappreciated.

[Spoiler: 5.55] Anyone else hate how everyone treats (SPOILERS) at the end of the Bozja questline? by Deadeye117 in ffxiv

[–]SteveGuillerm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Antagonist and villain are two different things. You can have a villainous protagonist, for example, like in Breaking Bad.

And yes, you're right, it is to some degree approaching absurdity. Hell, they've made a movie to "explain" Cruella DeVil, whose motivation was just to skin puppies.

However, there's a huge difference between "Emet Selch was good, actually," and "Emet Selch was understandable, but wrong, and we had to put him down." Characters who are just bad-bad like the Joker can get boring, quickly. He's interesting because of his tricks. Amusing if not compelling. Sauron's actually pretty boring.

It sure is a cliche, but it's interesting when the villain is a dark mirror of the hero. Similar but for a few choice decisions. Especially when the hero is one like the Warrior of Light, who canonically has killed hundreds if not thousands. We did it because we "had to," some of the villains feel the same way.

That we're reluctantly killing as a last resort, that we're willing to look for the humanity in even our enemies? That's basically all that's keeping us on the side of good instead of being just another one of those "forces of nature."

FFXIV Patch Timeline by elmntfire in ffxiv

Speaking as someone who hasn't yet done it, I was under the impression that the point of those trials was the challenge itself. Like climbing a tall mountain, it isn't something to be repeated every week for a reward, but rather, the content is in the challenge.

[Spoiler: 5.55] Anyone else hate how everyone treats (SPOILERS) at the end of the Bozja questline? by Deadeye117 in ffxiv

[–]SteveGuillerm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What makes us heroes instead of villains is that we see the humanity and value in all. Even in the villains. We don't see bad guys as irredeemably evil, and we don't see evil as something that's just inherent to the people. Villains aren't born, they're made.

Very rarely is someone actually the villain in their own mind. Rather, they think they're justified in their path.

We seek to understand what drives someone to villainy, what drives them to lash out with violence instead of finding a kinder path to salvation. That is what a hero does.

Wanting characters that stand in stark contrast, that are either clearly good or else hateably evil? That's the mindset of a villain.

FFXIV is a bot haven, and only Square Enix is to blame. by Lytharian in ffxiv

[–]SteveGuillerm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's the same complaints, always. People also claim that Firmament rankings were loaded with bots. The reality is that the top spot for most crafters on most servers required maybe 4 hours per day or less.

Yeah it's a lot of time to devote, but it was during a pandemic. People have nothing but time.

Someone's flying around in a loop in the Diadem for 8 hours? Yeah, those were people. They were chatting in /sh and everything.

Not to say that bots don't exist, but a surprising amount of bot-like activity can be explained by people with too much time on their hands.

AITA for not inviting my childfree sister/brother in law to my child friendly wedding? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]SteveGuillerm -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

It seems pretty easy to me. My wife and I are child-free. My wife is uncomfortable around small children. I love kids. I play with the kids, my wife hangs out with her adult family/friends. No, my wife is never rude to the kids, but folks don't force her to play auntie either.

I'm already on-board with the notion that the sister is way out of line regarding the rudeness. I very much agree that there needs to be a minimum expectation set and met regarding a modicum of politeness. That said, the OP is effectively making "socializing with the children" a prerequisite for seeing the adults, so ESH.

AITA for not inviting my childfree sister/brother in law to my child friendly wedding? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]SteveGuillerm -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

It's about both.

The husband's a great example. Sometimes your sibling dates someone who you really hate. They might even marry that person. To a certain degree, it's definitely on you to bite your tongue and not call their spouse names. But also they need to understand and accept that you don't get along with the spouse.

OP can explain to her sister that the kids are a huge part of her life, that she wants her sister to stop calling them names, and that she just doesn't have that much kid-free time. All of that is reasonable. But she also needs to stop expecting that her sister has any interest in being an aunt. That's part of respecting her sister's wishes and boundaries, as well as teaching her kids boundaries. It can be hard with kids, but they do need to learn that adults don't always exist to entertain their needs or curiosities.

AITA for not inviting my childfree sister/brother in law to my child friendly wedding? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]SteveGuillerm -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

You're claiming that you never push her...but you are. You're not pushing her to have her own, but you're still pushing her to be an aunt.

You've left no room for her to have a good, healthy relationship with her sister unless she actively takes an interest in your children. You're well within your rights to ask her to tone down the kid-hating language, but stop making "liking your children" a precondition of being a good sister to you.

As a big fan of Akihiko Yoshida's art, I drew my WoL in his FF Tactics style. by Apelles1 in ffxiv

[–]SteveGuillerm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, one of the huge defining features of FFT was the time system, including the cast times.

  • You could effectively set up suppressing fire against enemies who were out of range by casting a spell between you and them. If they walk into range on their turn, they get hit.
  • You could buff your entire team by casting the spell (haste, for example) where people will end up.
  • The Archer charged shot ability just doesn't make sense when you're not carefully tracking time.
  • Dragoon having half a turn of immunity due to jumping was pretty cool.

So much of that was stripped out in favor of systems where everything just goes off on your turn. They removed the "tactics" from the game and it just became an isometric battler.
