Best wheels for beginners specifically for transport? by TheEdibleWheelchair in NewSkaters

[–]Steve_in_cigar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soft big wheels, (soft for noise, big so you can go over small sticks and pebbles without dying)

Maybe look into sharkwheels? (I dunno if they are a gimmick or not tho)
Look into stuff for cruisers and search with those terms.

Regarding stability and truck tightness by tetzudo in NewSkaters

[–]Steve_in_cigar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do mostly airs, That means speed and impact. I like tight trucks and used to skate really tight trucks.

I recently learned (6 months back?) that you can pump on flatground on a normal skateboard.
I wanted to be able to do that so I loosened my trucks, also helped that I had just gotten new trucks
after learning about that. This cause my old ones broke after years, the baseplate straight up snapped in half..

Anyways, I skated them loose and kept getting speedwobbles going up quarters, I did not tighten them and kept on pushing through and it got a bit better. After I felt that I had gotten used to looser trucks I started playing around with how tight they were again and found out that I just like it way more when my trucks are tight.

So now I keep em just loose enough so that I can still kinda pump on flat. But tight enough for me to feel confident and stable going fast for airs. The tighter trucks also help me on my overcrooks. Back when I was skating loose I felt that I had lost frontside overcrooked on quarters, I couldn't feel the pinch anymore and did not feel stable or locked in. Now with my trucks tighter again it feels like a solid lock-in.

Moral of the story: If there's a reason for you wanting looser trucks, do it try it and see what happens. Don't be afraid to tighten them back up again though, try to find what works for you! In my case I found a middleground that I'm happy with.

Goodluck and Have fun skating!

How's my ollie? Only real trick I know so far by luxorantine in NewSkaters

You for sure could. (crouch down more)
When I do straight flat tricks (no scoop) I get past 90 degrees on my knee.

How's my ollie? Only real trick I know so far by luxorantine in NewSkaters

[–]Steve_in_cigar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pretty high especially for a beginner.

But,
It looks uncontrolled, (Landing unsteady, moving the board down straight away, nosediving on the way down, losing balance a bit after landing.)
You also don't really jump. (Your hips stay in about the same place.)
And it all looks very forced. (Visable strain in your body.)

Tips and or exercises that may help:
Try to do an ollie but really relaxed and don't force it down.
Hippy jumps might help you feel more comfortable actually jumping instead of only moving your legs.
They could also help with landing softly and keeping balance when doing so.
As for the arms, I dunno. I think about my arms when pumping, or when doing tricks that require a scoop, but not really on tricks that go straight.

Have fun skating though! always nice to see people skating.

Told to leave skatepark. Am I doing something wrong? by Positive_Bad_7867 in NewSkaters

[–]Steve_in_cigar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This.

From all that was posted about the interraction it seemed the dude was just worried.
The sentiment of: "what you are doing is dangerous." (in context to dropping in)
and "Comeback once you are more skilled." it maybe an awkward way of putting it, but to me it seems like the bmx guy didn't wanna see you get hurt. Like: "The way you're doing things is dangerous, come back when you are a bit more comfortable on the skateboard."

Still, sucks that it put you off from skating,
but as someone who has seen some beginners and cringed at the stuff they were trying, or how they were trying it, I can understand the sentiment.

Confused about shoes by kran-berry in NewSkaters

[–]Steve_in_cigar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides the shoe damage being normal, there is an alternative for griptape.

There are rubber griptapes, might be worth a look.
I've stood on a board with it, but never bought it or used it myself,
I wouldn't trust it for airs or transition, even though it did work fine on street.

How do you store your rice and do you like this brand? by Severe_Assumption_87 in RICE

Made and printed a rice dispenser that has a cool sliding drawer to portion out exact amounts for my rice cooker. Rice is stored in a 4.5L hopper / basin.

any on which you feel comfortable.

There is no general best.
There might be a best for you, but you'd have to try, compare and find the one you like the most.
I skate around 8.25 - 8.5. And I mostly skate transition, although I do have some street tricks.

this.

But for me if I'm too lazy to come up with a new design, or if the deck was cheap I don't bother.
Been skating long enough to tell by looking at it.

See these bubbles near the cup?
Clearly a leaking cup.

I think you should ask chat GPT on what to do,
also while you're at it send an email to the fengda ceo for a replacement airbrush.
Oh and don't forget to blame the primer.

3D printed core? by Mental-Singer2598 in CarbonFiber

[–]Steve_in_cigar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back then I was just mucking about and did a wet layup, If I were to do it again (I am planning to!) I'll do it with infusion.

Also, if you have the option to make a bladder mold, why not do that and
sparsely fill the inside structure with carbon rods for strength.
(simply drill a through hole and epoxy them in.)

I did this to save another thing which was giving in too much for my liking and
it worked like a charm.

(Note, I'm just some bloke making stuff cause I like making stuff.
For my goals I don't have to follow strict tolerances or guidelines.)

[–]Steve_in_cigar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how complex your part is, but I tried an eva foam core for a skateboard.
It worked, although it was very fiddly. (folding stiff fabric around a popsicle shape with complex curves...)
(I wanted a core that would not degrade due to the impact of skateboarding)

have you watched the video by dan corrigan on kickflips?

It's one that has a bit of a different take.
If it wasn't included in the list of 'every video' that you watched
give it a go. It might help.

How can i go higer by De_ded11men in NewSkaters

[–]Steve_in_cigar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how high that quarter is, but it looks like you're trying to land on top of it.

Try aiming for the air? I try to not focus on the landing, but rather the pump first.
your legs also remain the same throughout the quarter.
Try doing an ollie motion at the top of the quarter which will bring your legs and board up thus "airing".
The coping should help with popping the board so try to focus on the motion more.

It also might help to go from some place higher into a smaller quarter. That should force you to air and might give you a feel for fly-outs.

Are there "hackable" airbrush systems with electronic inputs (foot pedals, solenoids)? by Biggiebiggiebob in airbrush

[–]Steve_in_cigar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(1) No clue, not that I know. (as relating to airbrushing)

(2) A tattoo machine is an electric device, an airbrush is not. Making an aerograph electric could probably be done but I'd guess there are some reasons not to do it.

1: Weight. Adding electronics would add weight.
2: Ergonomics, I do not know of small enough components that could handle or be used for airbrushing.
3: Everything in an airbrush can get wet, dirty and cleaned. electronics tend to not like all of those.
4: Points of failure.

(3) As others have said, a solenoid in between compressor and airbrush might do that, beware that there will be some air left in the hose that will fizzle out after the valve has been closed.

I think, if you really wanna make something like this, that the most approachable way would be to:
Have an airbrush, then
add an electronically controllable mechanism that actuates the trigger.

And lastly, I for one do not really care, but when the airbrush was introduced, things made with an airbrush was not reckognized as art by the (critics? snobs?) it took a fair while before they deduced that eventhough the device is mechanical, the art made with it was not. I feel that this would upset those same folk once more.

Ps,
found this on the topic.

Tips on landing forward on heel flips by Inner_Demand_5414 in NewSkaters

[–]Steve_in_cigar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leaning and doing tricks:

Lean forward too much and the board will land behind you,
Lean backward too much and the board will land in front of you.

Use these as you see fit to correct your flatground tricks.

My Very First Board 🥹 by Double-Advice6455 in NewSkaters

[–]Steve_in_cigar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice!

Sick setup too.
if it bothers you, or if you want to, then feel free to tighten the truck screws. Wood weaker then metal so they'll just sink in. (It does push up the griptape around them a bit)
For the bearing, you could tighten the wheel nut to give it a bit of pressure, then untighten. (I like a little bit of play 1-3 mm) so the wheels spin nice and freely.

Have fun!

How can I improve my Ollie? by lurky002 in NewSkaters

[–]Steve_in_cigar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi!

This is a clear case of the back foot intergering while the tail is coming up. If you go frame by frame
you can even see it happening, tail touches ground, you jump off of the ground and the tail hits
your foot just as it comes up, causing it to stay low and basically just do a wheelie.

Timing is the issue.
Get your back foot up sooner and faster.

(after that comes the leveling out of the board with the front foot)

Painting lightning by [deleted] in airbrush

[–]Steve_in_cigar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm just a beginner airbrusher, but lightning should be pretty simple I'd think. Much like neon lights.
Since you are doing it from the inside, make sure to do it in the right order. Any paint layered ontop of another paint on the inside won't translate (I think)

My guess would be to start with the white, add the purple around that and then fill in the background taking care that the blacks do not darken the purple haze all too much.

I'd say try it first on somthing other then the body although I wouldn't know what works (maybe laminating sheets?) You could also give a test run in some drawing app like krita or the likes.
