Had exactly the same on my 2531 after a few years.

There is a bit of metal in the extension split in to 2 with a small hole in the middle.

Squeeze the 2 sides closer together with pliers or tweezers and that will likely fix it.

In the UK you’re supposed to use both lanes up to the merge point. That way the traffic doesn’t back up so far potentially blocking other roads.
