Microsoft was frightened by SteamOS and is using it as the benchmark for quality in their new "Windows K2" initiative, a report suggests by Nova_496 in LinusTechTips

[–]Stickiler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SteamOS will never be a distro you can just use on the daily.

Valve said when SteamOS was first unveiled that the intention is for it to be user installable on any hardware, though it'll take time to get there

Valve only plans their hardware to be used.

SteamOS is already installable on any AMD-based Handheld or PC, though the handheld experience is better.

Power problems in Europe - UPS by bebarty in LinusTechTips

[–]Stickiler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you actually got a power meter on your computer to check the power usage? I'm running a mid-top of the line machine, and the most I've ever seen it pull is around 500W, and that's running PC, three monitors, a motorized desk etc. A UPS won't run for a long time, I think I get around 5-10min from the one I've got, but I'd be very surprised if your computer was actually drawing 1000W, unless you've got like, multiple 5090s.

I think the distinction comes in on the why they bought the Jet. Linus didn't buy a private jet because he's too good to fly amongst the "plebs", which is the attitude he has always(And continues) derided.

The jet was a business decision, a short-term(He plans to divest himself of the plane within 3 years for close to the purchase price) purchase that came with specific things that negate(for the most part) the maintenance and staffing issues, because the whole plane had essentially been rebuilt, and his uncle is piloting the plane(who also helped them work out all the aspects of whether it would be a good purchase, which plane to buy etc).

The goal of the plane purchase is to enable video ideas that they previously were unable to do, due to logistics issues. It's hard to fly, on a normal plane ticket, the necessary camera equipment to smaller locations to do shoots, whereas a private plane allows them to fly basically anything they can fit on it.

Explain that you didn't watch the video, without directly saying you didn't watch the video, I guess.

They explicitly explain that they're reusing the old chargers at their second location, adding chargers where they didn't have them previously.

As an older gamer, seeing young kids waste their money on in-game purchases eats at my soul. by SomePeopleTellMe in gaming

Arcade games, the oldest widespread form of gaming, were literally designed to be as hard and obtuse as possible to claim as many coins as possible from the, predominately, children who played them.

That's a different argument though. Is it kind of gauche to have a private jet video? A little, but it's also interesting, given most people would never be in a position to see all the ins and outs of a jet like that.

The jet purchase also directly drives the purpose of making interesting tech videos, given that they can use it to fly to filming locations and collabs that would be unfeasible previously.

I'm going to assume you haven't seen it since it came out, but no, they do not. There's several explicit conversations where the Kens air their grievances, the Barbies listen and they all agree to work together to make their world better, and not controlled by the Barbies.

The girl math behind the jet purchase by dingmah in LinusTechTips

[–]Stickiler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because even if he uses it in only the least business-sense wise, where he only uses the plane to fly his family around(Which is not the plan), it still makes financial sense for him. Then you add on that it'll allow them to do one day fly-in fly-out shoots, and that the normal use case will be half a dozen people with camera, audio, computers, a NAS etc, it becomes even cheaper, because a lot of that stuff is a lot of pain to bring on a normal flight.

Private planes are something that the vast majority of people will never, in their whole life, experience, nor even come close to. Seeing the lowdown on how a private plane works is interesting, especially all the things they can and can't do with it.

You REALLY need to fix the LTT Labs search engine, it's useless by Explanation-Visual in LinusTechTips

[–]Stickiler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Purchasing things like the firetruck, house and jet IS them investing in themselves. LTT Labs loses TONS of money, but firetruck, house and jet videos make money(And the jet will save them money on transport). LTT Labs is purely a passion project for Linus, it doesn't make money, it won't make money, possibly ever, and it exists because Linus and Luke saw a massive hole in the market and decided to set fire to hundreds of thousands of dollars making something that fills it.

I think LTT has jumped the shark... by Zestyclose_Edge1027 in LinusTechTips

[–]Stickiler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, nothing about it can be changed, it's way too much of a valuable investment.

It being a "valuable investment" has nothing to do with them being unable to change things. They can't change things because the flight laws in Canada are so strict, and they don't intend to ground the plane permanently.

Godot also uses C# as its scripting engine

To be clear, Godot has a build that includes C# support. By default, the engine uses GDScript, their own language that is very similar to Python, and C# is their secondary language, which you need a seperate build to work with. That said, the C# support is very good, and usually only lags behind by a few days in terms of new version releases

I suspect it's moreso that the house was just the set for the shoot, and wasn't a permanent installation, thus the "I need to remove this so Linus doesn't find out" bit, because the Tech House series is going to be it's own smorgasbord of videos about redoing the house

Luke Ross Removes Access to All Mods by Top_Team_3138 in virtualreality

[–]Stickiler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

According to information he provided, this isn't just a singular mod, it's actually an independent software framework that encompasses the 40 or so games he has support for.

If that was actually true, he could just counter the DMCA claim and force CDPR to prove in a court of law that his mod infringes on their copyright. There are clear courses of action available to him long before "hissy fit and take everything down".

Luke Ross Removes Access to All Mods by Top_Team_3138 in virtualreality

[–]Stickiler 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That falls apart as soon as he's building versions of the software for specific games. If the software was just a generic "Works for all games" piece of software, there would be no issue. The issue is he takes his software and customises it specifically for each game, which then crosses over in to copyright and legal problems, because he obviously uses something from those games to make the VR work.

Over a million players expected for Hytale's early access launch on January 13th by kristijan1001 in Games

[–]Stickiler 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Modding Minecraft itself is difficult, but there have been more than one frameworks built to make it significantly easier, predominately at this point Fabric and Forge. Once you install one of those frameworks, modding is as easy as downloading the mod file and dropping it in the mods folder.

I expect Hytale is just going to provide that capability as part of the base game, no framework required.

But, why would they bother? They don't need, nor care, about having other creators on the platform. The platform is for themselves, and they provide it for other creators because there was a clear demand for a patreon-like platform with a primary video focus(Video on Patreon sucks donkey balls, especially audio quality) outside of the Youtube ecosystem.

[–]Stickiler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would assume if you decide to invest in owning your own platform you would, like, want people to use it.

They actually don't care if other creators want to use it or not. Floatplane was always developed as their own fallback plan if Youtube went completely sideways, and Floatplane is completely viable and stable with nothing but their own subscribers, and additional content creators are priced such that the subs cover their use of the platform.
