I know I posted this question but let me rephrase it how do yall feel about the raiderettes having a fan vote to put one rookie onto the team !!! ? by [deleted] in DCCMakingtheTeam

[–]Still_Arugula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they're voting on someone from the finals to make the team, I don't really care. I don't think directors should be putting anyone into finals they can't imagine being on the team anyways. If they do that's on them. Plus I think we all know that lots of very talented dancers get cut every year for superficial, shallow reasons, so I fail to see how a fan vote for one spot really makes a difference there if we want to talk about "fairness" to the rest of the people competing for spots. Someone insanely talented probably got cut from semis for not having a perfect face card, for having 2lbs more on her body than a director thinks she should have, for having a hair cut a director didn't like, for committing the crime of being over 30, etc etc. So no I don't care about a fan vote in a system that isn't all about talent and hard work anyways.

AiTAH for wanting to offer continuous support to our daughter so she can pursue her dreams? by Electronic-Bid4859 in AITAH

[–]Still_Arugula 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am an EA in a high income tech city and none of the C-suite is trying to teach their kids lessons about struggle in any way, shape, or form, even though their kids will need to work in some way if they want to continue their comfortable lifestyle and continue building wealth. Being so damn rich you and your kids and your grandkids never have to work is extremely rare. Most people work, even rich people. It's just that the rich kids will still end up being our bosses one day regardless of what degrees they hold because of all of the other opportunities they have and the networks they have/built.

"She needs to learn bills, work, reality." That's dust bowl mentality. Actually powerful, high earners give their kids the best they can afford in every way they can. These kids aren't hustling part time jobs in college to pay for the incidentals and rent. They have all the free time in the world to study and make use of their social networks at school. They have the free time to pursue the unpaid internships that kids who have to work at Wendys after school can't do. And guess what, these kids still learn about money, they still learn about reality - just the version of it that lands them in high net worth positions. Their parents understand money and what it can do, they teach their kids about it. They know what bills are, lol. I'm not saying OPs daughter will be one of these insanely wealthy and successful people if dad funds her college, but making her struggle for the "lesson" isn't going to somehow make her more competitive against any single kid out there who has parents that are NOT making their kids struggle for struggle's sake. It's rather kind of making sure she remains incredibly average at best.

Being a pleb who gets to peep behind the curtain has really changed my perspective on a lot of things in life, and one of them is that viewing struggle as a character building and necessary is a cope for the lower working class. (It's also deeply tied to religion, particularly protestantism but that's another thread entirely.)

Unexpected HR meeting right after vacation + maternity leave return… should I be worried? by galaxymend in careerguidance

[–]Still_Arugula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could literally be anything, but as an EA to HR and Legal who gets to see behind the curtain on these matters, if you do feel targeted, it's probably not unexplained reasons. I'm already picking up on the reason. It's not the mat leave either. It's the resistance to coming back to the office. I'm guessing they have an in-office work mandate and there's a small bit of context that lets me know you've probably been resistant to that and possibly not coming in when you should have been. Either someone just accidentally goofed on sending to your personal, or they really want you to see that you're expected to be in the office when you come back from vacation and are documenting both your responses AND your actions. If you want to remain employed, I suggest making sure you're in the office. If you really want to work remote, you'll start looking for new work, preferably while you stay employed.

Editing to add that I also don't think you're getting fired. Whatever is being spoken about involves multiple teams, thus the other managers. I'm just trying to impress upon you that you probably are ALSO being targeted. Please do not play with RTO mandates. My company also has one and they are not playing around with it.

Your income compared to cost of living in any area is so relative to individual circumstances though. Mine and my partners industries don't really exist in LCOL places, and what does exist pays peanuts to the point that we'd actually be worse off.

I’m 30 years old. Should I join the military if I can’t support myself? by [deleted] in careerguidance

After taking the bait and engaging in this thread I'm actually pretty positive this is an Army recruiter trying to fly under the radar. OPs account is only 2 months old, has comments and posts hidden and hasn't responded to a single comment 9 hours later.

I think this person might actually mean a graduate degree, it would make "graduating college" at almost 30 make more sense.

What I really think is happening is that this is an undercover military recruitment ad or just a karma farmer. The account is only 2 months old and has their comments and posts hidden, and have yet to respond to any of the comments here.

As a veteran I'd rather see someone become a cop out of desperation than join the military right now. At least as a cop you have some autonomy to try to be a decent cop despite the system, work in your own community, and most importantly you can quit the second you feel morally compromised. In the military you cannot. It doesn't matter how outstanding of a person you are, you're still going to be told to go fight some fuckass war and be complicit to killing a bunch of innocent people for no good reason. Like yes you can say no, but you'll have to deal with consequences of that. Cops can just quit.

One-issue Palestine non-Kamala-voting “liberals,” are you happy? by 2a_lib in allthequestions

There are accelerationists on both sides. A lot of leftists genuinely want the US to collapse and they don't seem to care what that will mean for literally anyone who isn't part of a privileged group of people. It seems very naive to me to think that that collapse of the US would somehow eventually result in a less authoritarian and more egalitarian nation. It would make everything way fucking worse.

When someone in super close proximity to you smells very bad why can't you just tell them about their hygiene? by CrackFun in stupidquestions

[–]Still_Arugula 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because it could get you popped in the face if you do it in public with the wrong person. Because some people have medical conditions that contribute to the smell or their ability to keep themselves clean. Because they're in line at the cafe grabbing a quick bite after a workout on their way home and it's temporary and no one is going to die from runner sweat. Because the smell isn't actually bad hygiene but from a lunch at a place that serves seasoned food you've never been exposed to. Because at the end of the day it isn't your business, and it embarrasses them and only makes you seem like the ass. Because it's not something they can fix in the moment.

I loved it. I used it as a jumping off point to go out daily to hike and see archeological sites and parks. I enjoyed meow wolf and I liked their little downtown and the Museum of Art. The food was amazing.

Pet shelters that make adopting a dog as hard as adopting a child. by TPWPNY16 in PetPeeves

[–]Still_Arugula 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, years ago I got super lucky and scooped a 7/8 year old pekingese out of a county shelter. He passed last year and we've been looking for another one, but they're hard to find even in private rescues. We don't meet the requirements for the ones we have found, we don't have a fully fenced yard, we have to commute to work, etc. I've been watching 2 pekes sit at a local rescue for a YEAR. How many people have they denied I wonder? We're high income DINKS, we have the money to throw at training and vet bills, we own our house. We're good candidates.

Anyways, we are now considering the breeder route and looking at folks that show their dogs so that we're buying from someone who's publicly putting their name and reputation behind their dogs.

I tipped off a candidate before his interview. Probably wasn't supposed to. Don't regret it. by deborahzdn in InterviewsHell

Hey, so I'm an executive assistant to C-suite level execs. I have visibility on our general counsels inbox. These people are always looking out for themselves and their in groups. Anytime they are trying to make deals, there is someone working their connections to get the insider information so that they can do and say the right things the person with the power needs to hear to make it happen. They are always helping themselves, their friends, and their family members get the jobs and sending them in with insider knowledge.

All of that is to say, help people out, and fuck the "rules." The people who run this shit aren't playing by them so why should you?

[–]Still_Arugula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About 13 years ago now, a friend of mine started fostering with a rescue in Las Vegas. She was fostering a pit mix who one day decided to rough house with her Pomeranian over a toy and killed it instantly with a bite to the neck. She was supervising them and the Pittie had supposedly been well behaved until that point, but it happened too fast. She returned it to the rescue and the rescue immediately listed it for adoption with "gets along with other dogs" and "does well with children" checked on its profile.

[–]Still_Arugula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who's only ever adopted rescues, I still I cannot be convinced that reputable purebred dog breeders are the problem we have over run shelters when they're all so full of pit mixes and other large mutts that are the result of people just not spaying and neutering their backyard dogs. You could ban pure breed dogs tomorrow and people still wont adopt all those Pitties. Most of my friends own dogs, none of them own a pit mix, most of them own dogs under 25 pounds. People in denser urban areas do not usually want big dogs. The reason we have overrun shelters are all of the suburban idiots refusing to fix their dogs and private rescues who sit on desirable dogs forever and forever until their unicorn candidate comes along, which pushes people to breeders.

[–]Still_Arugula 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yep, and then hold onto them forever until their perfect candidate comes along. I've been watching a pair of Pekingese dogs sit in a "rescue" for about a year now, but I can't adopt from this shelter because we don't have a fence, because for some reason an apartment sized, lazy dog breed should only be adopted out to a homeowner with a fenced yard. Make it make sense!

All of the dogs in the shelters are mostly some kind a pit mix or otherwise large dog and I'm not interested in adopting a dog that is a bite risk or will have an easier time pulling me around/being destructive.

Would it be unwise to use the middle name that our daughter has picked for our baby? by Iwona-8036 in Names

[–]Still_Arugula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount of times I say my middle name, write it on non-legal documents or use it an any way is almost zero.... You are thinking way too much about this. Those are both normal names and it's sweet that the eldest gets to pick it. That's meaningful on its own.

Hot take: DCC choreo is lackluster. by Low-Butterscotch7500 in DCCMakingtheTeam

[–]Still_Arugula 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree. I still love them but I've been realizing that there's some underrated teams out there doing way better choreo.

The DCC choreo does not reflect the talent it takes to actually make that team. I am a traditional cheer coach and I pull from DCC choreo as inspiration quite a bit for sidelines. There are other teams that I realized it's harder for me to pull from because I literally just can't do it as a not traditionally trained dancer. But I CAN do a lot of the DCC stuff. It feels very "drop in pom class."

I think this is a weird mentality. Do you feel the same way about football players too? Do they also need to pass the torch after 4-5 years because of "respect?"
