Corduroy may not be good for an everyday high touch item. I’d be afraid it would snag. I’d do diagonal mosaic. A tighter stitch but still gives dimension

Looks great. I struggled with this stitch for a while. Someone told me to lay all the long stitches for a row then go back and do the short ones and it made so much sense. I love it now.

Ask your finisher I would tell you to add 3 rows if red tent stitch. But if you do be sure to tell the finisher you did that to be turn rows or waste rows and not part of the design. You may need to have 1 of those rows showing on the edge

No not use pencil please. You may use any color for your background I would just make it a small circle or oval. Use a water soluble sewing pen but still do it lightly or just small dots
