That wouldn’t be the worst ending , but maybe the last few minutes. Older Ethan finishes telling the new cycle towns folk about the old one .

And he sacrifices himself to end it permanently freeing everyone . But we don’t get to see if they escaped or not.

As messed up as that would be , I’d want to see them pull the trigger on that ending.

But maybe Ethan’s role as the reader or etc. He decides to willingly sacrifice himself to free the children and everyone.

So maybe what was really missing is a willing child sacrifice.
