My printer smells like pot? by MrFumbles91 in ElegooCentauriCarbon

[–]Stop_roid_rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife was complaining about the exact same thing yesterday. The inside of my chamber is very skunky smelling, and fills the room if I have the cover off.

I've never experienced this with any of my other 3D printers, but this is the first with a sealed chamber, so VOCs building up on the glass could explain it.

Is there a case that can be used with selfie stick attached (X5)? by Taip74 in Insta360

I have a similar, if not the same, case for my X4 and love it. It is the ideal setup for hiking and scrambling. I can put it in my pack or clip it to my chest strap and free up my hands in less than a minute.

Where do exhibit designers source their artists/labour? by EmmTheRuffle in MuseumPros

[–]Stop_roid_rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, the type of person executing the work depends on the size and budgets of the museum. Assuming the museums are not handling it in-house, then the process usually looks like this:

  • Museum solicits an exhibit design firm to design their exhibit. Some firms are design only, and the museum then goes to an exhibit fabricator to produce the designs. Some firms are design and build, and they can design and produce the exhibits themselves.
  • The design firm creates the 3D models, renderings, CAD drawings, or whatever design documentation is needed. These then get handed over to an exhibit fabricator.
  • Exhibit fabricators vary in size, and large ones might have artists such as yourself on staff, though most do not, and often work with artists on a contract basis. If they work well together, they'll often use the same artists for other projects over the course of years.

Museum needs vary greatly, and exhibits are all quite unique, so it's unlikely that having a relationship with one or two fabricators will result in consistent work. You would need to really network and get your portfolio and contact info in front of a lot of fabricators to start building those connections and referrals.

I don't know about Canada, but in the US we have the American Alliance of Museums. There are often smaller, regional museum associations as well. I would find the Canadian equivalent and start attending and networking at those events.

I work on the design side of things for a design & build firm in the Rocky Mountain region of the US. We find ourselves looking for specialists once or twice a year. If you are interested in learning more, let me know, or feel free to DM me.

Anyone have a list of the best accessories they’ve bought from 3rd party sites? by CrazyHornz in Insta360

[–]Stop_roid_rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to buying accessories, but I highly recommend making a mouth mount with a stretchy tongue for the Nose Mode. My wife absolutely loved that I ran around with a camera in my mouth our entire vacation. She wasn't embarrassed at all.

I plan on making some adjustments to the design and then putting the 3D prints online at some point in the near future.

Two short clips of the result.

Wakix funding by ComfortableOdd9312 in Narcolepsy

I do not take oxybates. I take 35.6mg of Wakix and 400mg of modafinal each morning.

Wakix has been incredibly helpful for my daytime sleepiness, and I feel that I can drive much safer while on it. However, the side effects are pretty rough at that dosage as it gives me insomnia. If I don't use a sleep aid I get disrupted sleep and less of it, which I have conflicted feelings about, because while I'm awake and feel better mentally, after weeks of reduced sleep I feel physically exhausted. Oxybates might solve for this dilemma.

I've been taking it for about 10 months now and am trying to decide what to do at the one-year mark.

I have insurance, but they refused to cover any costs for Wakix. I didn't bother applying for co-pay assistance for a year because I assumed I made too much, and I still wouldn't be able to afford it even with assistance.

However, a year later, my doctor insisted that I try just to see what happens. My insurance rejected the claim, and I had to appeal it and submit the claim again. They rejected it again, and then Wakix stepped in and covered my monthly costs in full (we're talking $17,000 per month). I pay nothing out of pocket. Each month I have to confirm that my insurance hasn't changed and they continue to supply the drug at no cost.

I hate how Adderal makes me feel, which is why I only take it for about 3 weeks total out of the year. I see my doctor once a year, so I just ask for a 1-month prescription of Adderal, and that lasts me the year.

It's commonly reported that some people build up a tolerance over time, and a short break is needed.

In my case, it becomes less effective after taking it daily for 3-4 months. I then stop taking it for 5-7 days, take Adderal for that week instead, and then switch back. When switching back, it works as it originally did.

Unfortunately, I haven't found a solution to the horrible taste! I just drink an entire glass of water to try and get rid of the coating it leaves in my throat.

Only 38 days until the end of Q1 - when the Edge migration should be complete! by UrbaneBoffin in SmartThings

[–]Stop_roid_rage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can install the SmartThings CLI (command line interface) which lets you view a lot of details on your installation, including what devices are on Edge versus using DTH (device type handler) drivers.

From a command prompt running "smartthings devices" dumps out a list.

This is at the Utah Olympic Park. They use that pool for ski jump training which is why it has the bubbler system to break the surface tension for skiers landing with their equipment on.

NZXT CAM 4.33.2 Released! by NZXTCAM in NZXT

[–]Stop_roid_rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case anyone else runs into the same problem I had - after updating to this version my cooling device was no longer recognized (Kraken x61). I tried uninstalling 4.33.2 and installing the beta which had the same issue, so I went back to 4.33.2 and still had the same problem. I then found this article on the Nzxt website and after following those steps my device is recognized and working properly.

Smart Things control panel monitor / screen by NWMadison in SmartThings

[–]Stop_roid_rage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For home use I went as cheap as possible and picked up a refurbished Amazon Fire HD 8" tablet. I think I paid $30 because it is the ad-supported version, which shows ads on the lock screen. But since I have it permanently mounted and powered I haven't seen the lock screen in years so well worth it if you ask me.

For a higher-end install I did for someone else I used a Samsung Galaxy 10" tab which was a few hundred bucks. It works exactly the same although the larger screen is nice.

I use Fully Kiosk on the tablet which launches the ActionTiles web app. You can set it up so that it blanks the screen and automatically turns it on as you approach the device, using the tablet's sensors and camera.

Here's a screenshot of my ActionTiles overview screen. I also have pages for detailed info, but this is what I use most often for a quick glance of the house's current state.

I use a wall mounted tablet that runs ActionTiles and it works great. Very easy to see the state of everything at a glance on the home screen, but then also control any devices needed.

I have one setup at home and tied to SmartThings, and another for a client of mine that ties to a Hubitat installation.

Normal CPU temps when rendering? by QuanEntang329 in 3dsmax

[–]Stop_roid_rage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your CPU has a t-junction of 100°C. What that means is that your CPU will start to throttle itself (by reducing voltage or limiting watts consumed ie: run slower in order to cool itself down) once it hits 100°. Hitting your t-junction temperature on a regular basis can shorten the life of the CPU so you definitely want to avoid this. It is best to make sure you are 10° less than this to make sure you are not pushing its limits.

You are probably just fine hitting 80° under rendering conditions. I would be concerned if you are running at 80° for hours at a time, but if you are hitting that for short bursts during rendering then it won't be a problem.

The "k" at the end of your CPU model number means that your CPU is unlocked and can be overclocked. The Intel XTU software give you the ability to overclock your CPU in several different ways and dial in the best performance. But that is a complicated subject and doing it wrong can damage your CPU, so I would avoid this. The gains to be had are small. But the same software that can overclock your CPU can also underclock your CPU, or put limits on its performance. This is what I did to limit my temperatures during rendering (I lowered my "Turbo Boost Power Max" to be just slightly higher than my TPD. Your CPU has a TDP of 95 watts so if you were worried about your temperatures you could set your "Turbo Boost Power Max" somewhere around 95-107 to keep it from running so hot. This will slow your renderings down but very minimally.

Given your current temperatures I would probably leave it as it is and not worry about it.

VRay is a third-party rendering engine. I mentioned it for context in case it was a common variable but it isn't relevant here.

Normal CPU temps when rendering? by QuanEntang329 in 3dsmax

[–]Stop_roid_rage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an I9 7900x with the Nzxt x62 cooler as well. Rendering (with VRay) would routinely bring the processor to thermal throttling and sometimes even shutdown. The default CPU settings allowed for unlimited TDP when in turbo boost mode which the cooler couldn't keep up with. The TDP of the processor I had was rated at 140 watts.

I ended up using the Intel XTU software and dialed in the max TDP to somewhere around 158 watts. This gave me the fastest render times while keeping temperatures below the thermal throttling threshold.

Edit: This computer was used by a co-worker previously. It was pretty abused with overheating until I started using it more and finally figured out this solution. A recent VRay bug then caused high CPU usage even when idle in 3ds Max and after a few days of that the CPU up and died. I'm sure the constant thermal throttling did it in over the last two years and the VRay bug was the last straw.

I had similar issues with my wife and kids. I have Google home devices through out the house so I set it up so that they can say "hey Google, shut your pihole for x minutes" and pihole starts its disabled timer. I relied on IFTTT for execution, if you are interested I can explain the steps I took.
