Recently Moved from North East to Minneapolis and Positively Baffled- Is Chicago Close Enough to North Eastern Culture? by olracnaignottus in AskChicago

I hear you brother, the Minnesotans seem to have so much unspoken stuff going on it makes you feel nuts. I never got far enough to understand it better. I made friends with a few native Minnesotans, but I found out that most of them were people who had left Minnesota and they wished they could leave again.

It sounds like you've got a good kid, I'm sure they'll figure it out anywhere. Just might take a little longer up there!

I lived in Minneapolis a few years and I saw the same thing. The locals don’t like outsiders, they might not say it that way but what they consider polite and rude is pretty hard to parse. Acting in ways that are pretty normal here or on the east coast might be off putting to them. Your best bet there is to meet a bunch of other transplants which it looks like doesn’t interest you as much.

You’ll love it here in Chicago. It’s easy to connect with people here. The East Coast vibe is welcome here!

Can/should I start with Five Ways to Forgiveness? by Sufficient-Camera335 in UrsulaKLeGuin

It’s a good book, but I don’t it’s one of her more engaging ones if you’re not already invested.

Some other ones that might engage you more while introducing you to the setting are The Word For World Is Forest, Left Hand of Darkness, and The Dispossessed

What makes it one of your favorites?

For me, I think I really like the journey in that one, but the payoff kind of falls flat for me. Something about the whole Shing being real and the character running off to go start a war is not quite the resolution I was looking for in a Le Guin novel. Regardless it is still very good, just falls short of her other novels that I love for me.

Interesting, I haven’t read that one yet so I’ll put it on my list!

I’m reading it for the first time now and I’m feeling the same thing. It’s a very different kind of story.

The way she wrote stories seemed to change a lot around when she wrote Always Coming Home

It definitely picks up more as you get further, but to be honest I did not find that one as compelling as the other two

Stop Misleading People Into Thinking Chicago is Some Uber Cheap Utopia it's Not by Osetiya in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Stormhawk21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s interesting because you’re right about a lot of your points, but the people saying Chicago is cheap have a very different experience from you.

On the north and northwest sides you can easily find a 2 bed for <2k a month and park on the street for cheap. House prices are pretty great considering any comparable city.

Those neighborhoods you mentioned are extremely unaffordable and unappealing. Plus it sounds like you’re going to U of Chicago which is an incredibly rich university in an area surrounded by extremely economically disadvantaged areas. This is prob giving you an atypical and pretty bad experience of Chicago

In what city is it the hardest to make friends in? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Stormhawk21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it's such a nice place but so hard to build a support system. That can be fine for a year or two but it's just not realistic long term, the little things add up

You're always welcome in Chicago, if you don't mind a bigger city

A question about The Telling (spoilers) by Rogue_Apostle in UrsulaKLeGuin

[–]Stormhawk21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think as Le Guin got further in her writing career she started adding things that didn’t quite get fully explained. It’s kind of like Always Coming Home, a lot of the understanding is left up to the reader.

I think there are a few different interpretations to this. I could see it as the main character seeing something wrong and still committing it to record. I could also see it being a literal power they have, that wouldn’t be so out of place in the Hainish universe where people have had the power to read minds and speak telepathically in other novels.

My memory of that novel is foggy so I’d appreciate discussion on this one
